Ten years, one trunk

The business has changed shape four times and never changed what it was rooted in. Each version was built out of what the last one could not do.

2016E-commerce

2018OjirehPrime Card

2023Multicurrency

More than one currency on one balance, and the rebrand to Pryme. A Nigerian business could hold dollars without holding a second institution.

2026Agentic operations

Accounts that do the work rather than only hold value. Five agents on the account, inside a policy you write — which is where the new mark starts.

Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Opening a US bank account on an F-1 visa

Bring your passport, I-20 and I-94. An SSN is not required for an F-1 student to open an account. What else banks may ask and how to get set up quickly.

The short answer

To open a US bank account as an F-1 student, bring your passport, Form I-20 and Form I-94 as proof of identity and immigration status, plus your student ID and an enrolment verification letter if your school provides one. A Social Security number is not required for an F-1 student to open a bank account, according to Elmhurst University's international office; banks may ask for a US address and an opening deposit.

Why open one early

You will need a US account to pay rent, receive on-campus wages, get a debit card that works without foreign transaction costs and avoid carrying cash. Elmhurst University's international office advises opening an account "as soon as you are able after your arrival" and avoiding carrying large amounts of cash.

Documents

Passport
Your unexpired Nigerian passport with your US visa.
Form I-20
Your Certificate of Eligibility from your school.
Form I-94
Your arrival record, issued on entry.
Student ID
Your university ID card.
Enrolment verification letter
Some schools provide a letter for banks; Elmhurst links one from its page.
US address
Your campus or apartment address; ask the bank what proof it accepts.
Opening deposit
Cash or a cheque to fund the account.

SSN is not required

Elmhurst states: "A social security number is not required for an F-1 or J-1 student to open a bank account." Most F-1 students cannot get an SSN unless they have authorised work, so banks that serve students accept passport and immigration documents instead. Some banks may ask for an ITIN or record that you have none; if a branch insists on an SSN, ask another branch or bank, or your international office for help. Our guide to SSN or ITIN explains when you can get each.

Choosing an account

Banks near US campuses often include large national banks and local community banks. Elmhurst lists both near its campus. When comparing accounts, ask:

  • Is there a student checking account, and does it have a monthly fee or minimum balance?
  • Can I open in person with my passport, I-20 and I-94, or online without an SSN?
  • What does an incoming international wire cost, and what exchange rate applies if money arrives in another currency?
  • Is there a fee for using other banks' ATMs?
  • How long do large deposits take to clear? Elmhurst notes large payments may take several days.

Steps

  1. Get a copy of your I-94 arrival record after you arrive.
  2. Collect your student ID and any bank letter from your school.
  3. Visit a branch, or start online if the bank allows it without an SSN.
  4. Fund the account with your opening deposit.
  5. Set up the debit card and app, then give your account details to your employer or school if you have a campus job.

Before you fly

Bring a card that works in the US for the first days, and enough funds for initial costs. Ask your home bank, as Elmhurst suggests, about the easiest way to send dollars, and plan how family will send support; see how parents in Nigeria send money to a child abroad.

Problems students meet at the branch

  • Name order. Nigerian documents often put the surname first. Make sure the name on the application follows your passport and I-20 exactly, or verification can fail.
  • No US address yet. If you are in temporary housing, ask the bank whether it will accept your campus address or a school letter, and update the address once you move.
  • An SSN request. If a staff member asks for an SSN, refer to the bank's own policy for non-citizens, or try another branch.
  • Holds on deposits. Large cheques or transfers from abroad may not be available straight away; keep a card or some funds for your first week.

Fees to compare before you commit

Fee schedules are published by each bank and change, so this is a list of what to look for rather than figures:

FeeWhy it matters to a Nigerian student
Monthly maintenance feeSome student accounts waive it; check the conditions and when the waiver ends
Incoming international wirePaid each time family sends money by wire
Out-of-network ATMMatters if your bank has no machines on campus
Overdraft or insufficient fundsCan be charged when a payment exceeds your balance
Paper statementsSome banks charge for posted statements

Ask for the fee schedule in writing and keep it. If you will receive regular support from Nigeria, the incoming transfer cost and the exchange rate applied usually matter more than the monthly fee.

Where Pryme fits

A US account handles local spending. A Pryme Personal Account can be opened from any country and holds USD, NGN, GBP and EUR with local details for each, so family can pay in naira and you choose when to Swap, with the rate and fee shown first. Outside Nigeria, Pryme works through regulated partners. See multicurrency.

Questions people ask

Do I need an SSN to open a bank account in the US as an F-1 student?

No. Elmhurst University's international office says an SSN is not required for F-1 or J-1 students; bring your passport, I-20 and I-94.

What documents do I need to open a US bank account as an international student?

Your passport, I-20 and I-94, plus your student ID and any enrolment letter from your school, and a deposit.

Can I open a US bank account from Nigeria before I travel?

Most students open after arrival, because banks ask for the I-94 arrival record issued on entry. Check the bank's own requirements.

Which US bank is best for international students?

It depends on your campus. Compare monthly fees, minimum balances, wire fees and ATM access at banks near you.
