Ten years, one trunk

The business has changed shape four times and never changed what it was rooted in. Each version was built out of what the last one could not do.

2016E-commerce

An online grocery store, built out of a faulty tab. Selling the food was the easy part — taking the money for it, and moving it, turned out to be the business.

2018OjirehPrime Card

A prepaid card. The first time the company issued rather than resold, and the first time it carried the obligations that come with holding somebody else’s money.

2020Microfinance bank

PrymeSolid Allianze acquired — an existing bank with an existing licence. The perimeter stopped being someone else’s to draw.

2023Multicurrency

More than one currency on one balance, and the rebrand to Pryme. A Nigerian business could hold dollars without holding a second institution.

2026Agentic operations

Accounts that do the work rather than only hold value. Five agents on the account, inside a policy you write — which is where the new mark starts.

Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

New to Ilorin? Opening an account and proving your address

Just moved to Ilorin for school, NYSC or a new job? What banks ask for, how tiers work, and how to prove an address you have only just moved into.

The short answer

To open a full bank account in Ilorin you normally need a BVN, your NIN, a valid photo ID, a passport photograph and proof of address such as a utility bill from the last three months. If you have no address proof yet, most banks will open a low-tier account with just your BVN and a photo, then upgrade you once you can prove where you live.

What a newcomer to Ilorin usually needs

Whether you have arrived for a degree at the University of Ilorin, a posting to a Kwara ministry, a hospital job or your service year, the banking rules are national, not local. The Central Bank of Nigeria's tiered know-your-customer system applies in Ilorin exactly as it does in Lagos, so the documents below will be asked for at any branch in Ilorin and in any bank app.

  • BVN: if you have ever had a Nigerian bank account, you already have one. Dial your bank's USSD code or check an old statement. If not, the bank enrols you at the branch.
  • NIN: banks now match your NIN to your BVN. If you have not enrolled, see our guide to NIMC centres in Ilorin.
  • Valid photo ID: international passport, driver's licence, national ID card or voter's card.
  • Passport photograph: one recent photo is usual.
  • Proof of address: a utility bill dated within the last three months is the standard request for a full account.

How account tiers work, and why they matter when you have just arrived

Banks sort accounts into tiers by how much they know about you. The lower tiers need fewer documents but cap how much you can hold and receive. These are the limits banks publish on their own pages, as at October 2026:

TierTypical documentsLimits a bank states (example: Fidelity Bank)
Tier 1Form, one passport photo, BVNSingle deposit ₦50,000; balance ₦300,000
Tier 2Tier 1 plus valid ID and BVNSingle deposit ₦100,000; balance ₦500,000
Tier 3Tier 2 plus utility billNo cumulative balance cap

UBA's page describes the same pattern: its Savings Lite account opens with a photo, your biodata and BVN, with a maximum single deposit of ₦50,000 and a maximum balance of ₦300,000, while its full savings account asks for a valid ID, a photo and a utility bill from the last three months, with a stated minimum opening deposit of ₦2,000. Check the current figures on each bank's own page before you go, because these change.

Proving an address you have only just moved into

This is the hard part for most new arrivals. A self-contained room in Tanke or Oke-Odo, a staff quarters flat or a family house where you are a guest rarely comes with a bill in your name. Options banks commonly accept, which you should confirm with the branch first:

  1. A utility bill in the landlord's name with a signed letter from the landlord confirming you live there. Many branches accept this with the landlord's ID.
  2. Your tenancy agreement or rent receipt showing the address.
  3. An employer's letter on letterhead confirming your posting and address, for new staff.
  4. An admission letter or student ID plus a hostel allocation, for students living on campus.
  5. Address verification by the bank: some banks send an officer or use a third-party check instead of a bill.

Your electricity bill in Ilorin comes from IBEDC, the distribution company for Kwara. If your flat has a prepaid meter, the token receipt usually carries the meter address, which some branches will look at. Our guide to buying IBEDC tokens in Ilorin explains where that receipt comes from.

Accounts that suit students and new staff

Students

A Tier 1 or Tier 2 savings account opened with your BVN and student ID is enough for most first-year students. What matters more is a working app, low transfer charges and a debit card you can use at campus POS points. If your parents send your allowance, give them the account number in the exact name on your BVN to avoid failed transfers.

New staff and corps members

Your employer or the NYSC may ask for an account in your name for salary or allowance payments. Open a full Tier 3 account as soon as you can prove your address, because a salary paid into a Tier 1 account can be held up by the balance cap. Corps members can read our note on managing money during service in Ilorin.

Steps: opening the account in your first week

  1. Check your BVN and NIN are linked and that the name, date of birth and phone number match on both.
  2. Choose a bank or app and read its account page for the documents and limits it states today.
  3. Open a basic account online or at a branch with your BVN, NIN and photo.
  4. Collect address proof (landlord letter, tenancy agreement or employer letter) within your first month.
  5. Upgrade to the full tier through the app or at the branch, and ask for a confirmation that the upgrade is done.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme is a technology company, not a bank. A Pryme Personal Account can be opened from your phone, and naira deposits are held by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank, licensed by the CBN and insured by the NDIC up to the applicable limit. The same account holds naira, dollars, pounds and euros, which helps if family abroad send money. Open an account or read how it works; your account protections are on the security page.

Questions people ask

Can I open a bank account in Ilorin without a utility bill?

Yes. Most banks will open a Tier 1 account with your BVN and a passport photo. You need address proof to upgrade to a full account without balance caps.

Is a landlord's NEPA bill accepted as proof of address in Ilorin?

Many branches accept an IBEDC bill in the landlord's name with a signed letter from the landlord and a copy of their ID. Confirm with the branch first, as practice differs.

What account should a Unilorin or KWASU fresher open?

A basic savings account opened with your BVN and student ID covers allowances and small payments. Upgrade once you have an address document so larger sums like fees can land.

Do I need NIN to open a bank account in Nigeria?

Banks now ask for your NIN alongside your BVN and match the two records. Enrol with NIMC first if you do not have one.
