Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Rates

Why old or small dollar notes get a lower rate in Nigeria

Why BDCs and banks in Nigeria pay less for older series and small dollar notes, what dealers mean by 'old', and how to avoid the discount lawfully.

The short answer

Nigerian BDCs and banks often pay a lower naira rate for older-series US notes and for $1 to $50 bills than for newer $100 notes, because older designs are harder to check for forgery and small notes cost more to handle and ship per dollar. US authorities say all US currency remains legal tender at face value, so the discount is a dealer's pricing choice, not a rule; you can reduce it by asking for quotes by denomination, depositing notes into a domiciliary account where your bank accepts them, or receiving dollars electronically.

Old notes are still valid money

The US Currency Education Program, run by the Federal Reserve, states that US notes remain legal tender regardless of when they were issued. An older $100 bill is worth $100 in the United States. In Nigeria, though, dealers are free to set their own buying price, and many pay less for notes they consider old, worn or small.

Why dealers pay less

  • Forgery checks. Newer designs carry more security features; the current $100 note, for example, has a blue security ribbon. Older series are easier to counterfeit and take longer to check.
  • Shipping and handling. Dealers and banks that send cash abroad pay per note and per shipment. A bundle of $10 bills worth $500 costs ten times as many notes to move as five $100 bills.
  • Demand. Travellers and payers abroad usually want large, recent notes, so dealers can resell those more easily.
  • Condition. Torn, marked, stamped or written-on notes may be refused or bought at a deeper discount.

What counts as 'old'

There is no CBN definition. Each dealer sets its own cut-off, usually by the series year printed on the face of the note and by design, with traders using informal labels for older and newer $100 designs. One BDC may accept a note another discounts. Ask before you sell, and ask in writing for a rate per denomination and series.

Worked example (illustrative figures)

Example only. A BDC quotes 1,400 for recent $100 notes and 1,370 for small or older notes. Selling $500 as five recent $100 notes gives ₦700,000. Selling the same $500 as small or older notes gives ₦685,000. The discount costs ₦15,000, or about 2.1% of the higher figure.

How to avoid the discount

  1. Ask family or clients abroad to send dollars electronically rather than as cash.
  2. If you are given cash, ask for recent, clean $100 notes.
  3. Ask your bank whether it accepts the notes for deposit into a domiciliary account and at what condition standard; see depositing dollar cash.
  4. Get written quotes from two licensed BDCs per denomination before you sell.
  5. Store notes flat and dry; do not write on, fold tightly or staple them.

For your other selling options, see where to sell dollars in Nigeria and the $500 comparison.

If the notes came from abroad

Relatives travelling home often bring small notes because that is what they had. A short message before they travel, asking for recent $100 notes or for an electronic transfer instead, usually saves more than haggling with a dealer afterwards. If you regularly receive small amounts, letting them build up in a dollar balance and converting once costs less than selling a few notes at a time, because each cash sale carries its own discount and trip. Keep any receipt from the bank or BDC that supplied the notes; it helps if a later buyer questions them.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme does not take cash notes. If your dollars arrive electronically into a Pryme account, they stay in dollars until you choose to convert, and Swap shows the rate and fee before you approve, with no note-size discount to worry about.

Questions people ask

Why do BDCs pay less for small dollar notes?

Small notes cost more per dollar to count, check and ship, and demand is lower, so many dealers pay a lower rate for them.

Are old dollar notes still valid?

Yes. The US Federal Reserve's currency education programme states US notes remain legal tender regardless of issue date. Nigerian dealers can still pay less for them.

What is the difference between big head and small head dollar?

They are informal trader labels for newer and older $100 designs. Each dealer sets its own cut-off, so ask before you sell.

Can I deposit old dollar notes in a domiciliary account?

Ask your bank. Banks set their own acceptance standards for note condition and series.
