Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

NHIA Act 2022: is health insurance now mandatory?

The NHIA Act 2022 made health insurance compulsory for every Nigerian and legal resident. Who it covers, how states enforce it and how many are enrolled.

The short answer

Yes on paper. The National Health Insurance Authority Act 2022, signed on 19 May 2022, makes health insurance mandatory for every Nigerian and legal resident, and requires employers with five or more staff to cover them. In practice enforcement runs through state schemes, and only about 21.73 million people were enrolled nationally by the end of 2025.

What the Act says

The National Health Insurance Authority Act 2022 was signed on 19 May 2022. According to KPMG's commentary, section 14 makes health insurance mandatory for every resident of Nigeria. The Act's coverage reaches:

  • Employers and employees in organisations with five or more staff (section 13).
  • The informal sector, through state schemes.
  • Vulnerable people, including under-fives, pregnant women, the aged, people with disabilities and the indigent, who pay no premium; their cover comes from a Vulnerable Group Fund.

Private insurance through an HMO is still allowed. Under section 31, employers register with their State Health Insurance Scheme and remit as state rules require, even where they already buy private cover.

How the system is split

LevelRole
NHIA (federal)Sets standards, accredits HMOs and providers, enforces the Act, runs federal programmes
State schemesRun health insurance for residents and set contribution rates through state councils
HMOsManage enrolment and pay hospitals for private and formal-sector plans
Vulnerable Group FundPays for those exempt from premiums; KPMG notes funding includes a 1 kobo per second levy on GSM calls

Is it enforced?

The Act carries offence provisions. KPMG's summary of section 48 gives fines of ₦1 million and/or two years' imprisonment for a first offence and ₦2 million and/or five years for a repeat. The ICIR's review of the Act did not describe any penalty aimed at individuals who simply do not enrol, and we found no reports of individuals being prosecuted. Enforcement so far has come mainly through states.

Lagos is the clearest example. An executive order effective 16 July 2024 required all residents to hold social health insurance, with a LASSRA number needed for the state's Ilera Eko scheme. Edo describes its scheme as mandatory under both the NHIA Act and its own 2019 law. Other states vary.

How many people are covered

Coverage remains low. In August 2024, The Guardian reported 18,675,088 people covered, about 8.5% of an estimated 220 million. NHIA data for the fourth quarter of 2025, reported by Nairametrics in July 2026, put national enrolment at 21.73 million. Delta had the largest state-scheme total at 2,925,353, followed by Lagos at 2,757,892.

Worked example

Example only: an employer with eight staff, each on a state plan costing ₦15,000 a year, would budget 8 × ₦15,000 = ₦120,000 a year. Actual premiums depend on the state and plan, so check your state scheme's current price list.

What to check first

  1. If you employ five or more people, register with your State Health Insurance Scheme and ask how contributions are remitted.
  2. If you are self-employed, check your state scheme's informal-sector plan.
  3. If you already have an HMO plan, confirm the HMO is accredited by the NHIA.
  4. Keep enrolment evidence; some states ask for it when you deal with government.

For a broader view of medical costs, see what to do in a pharmacy emergency and what inflation means for your budget.

Where Pryme fits

Premiums and out-of-pocket costs are easier to plan for with money set aside. A Savings Box can hold a health fund separate from spending money, and a Personal Assistant can remind you before a yearly premium falls due.

Questions people ask

Is health insurance compulsory in Nigeria?

Yes. The NHIA Act 2022 makes health insurance mandatory for every Nigerian and legal resident. Enforcement mainly runs through state schemes, such as Lagos's executive order of July 2024.

Must my employer give me health insurance?

Employers with five or more staff are covered by the Act and must register with their State Health Insurance Scheme and remit as state rules require, according to KPMG's summary of sections 13 and 31.

What is the penalty for not having health insurance in Nigeria?

The Act has offence provisions (KPMG cites ₦1m and/or two years for a first offence), but sources we checked describe no penalty specifically for individuals who do not enrol.

How many Nigerians have health insurance?

About 21.73 million by the end of 2025, according to NHIA data reported by Nairametrics in July 2026.
