Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

New Yam season in Enugu: when yam and foodstuff prices fall

Why yam and some foodstuff get cheaper around harvest and the New Yam festivals in Enugu, what stays expensive, and how to buy and store in bulk.

The short answer

Yam and some foodstuff prices around Enugu usually ease after harvest, when fresh supply reaches markets around the time communities hold their New Yam festivals, and rise again as stored stock runs down before the next season. Festival dates are set by each community and harvest timing varies by year and crop, so watch market prices for a few weeks rather than relying on a fixed date.

In Enugu and across the South-East, the New Yam festival marks the arrival of the new harvest. Traditionally, many communities do not eat or sell new yam publicly until the festival has been held, which is why the festival and the price of yam are linked in people's minds. This guide explains why prices fall, which foods follow the pattern and which do not, and how to buy in bulk without losing money to spoilage.

Why prices fall after harvest

Food prices follow supply. In the months before harvest, markets sell from stored stock that is shrinking, and prices rise. When the new harvest comes in, supply jumps and farmers who need cash sell quickly, so prices ease. Yam follows this pattern strongly because it is a seasonal crop with limited storage life.

  • Before harvest: stored tubers are scarcer, prices higher.
  • Harvest and festival period: new tubers arrive, choice widens, prices ease.
  • Months after: prices stay moderate while stored yam holds, then rise as stock runs down.

Input costs matter too. In August 2024 Enugu State reported distributing agro inputs to farmers alongside MSME grants (Peoples Gazette, Aug 2024); support of this kind affects how much farmers plant and harvest in later seasons.

What follows the season and what does not

FoodSeasonal patternNotes
YamStrong; eases after harvestStorage life limited; buy sound tubers
Fresh maize and vegetablesStrong; cheap in seasonDo not store long
Cassava products (garri)ModerateProcessed, so storable
Rice, beans, oilWeaker link to local harvestAffected by transport, fuel and wider markets
LivestockRises with festivals and DecemberDemand-driven, not harvest-driven

How to buy yam in bulk

  1. Watch prices for two or three weeks as new yam arrives, at the same market and for the same tuber size.
  2. Buy sound tubers: firm, unbroken skin, no soft or mouldy patches, no cuts from harvesting.
  3. Agree transport before buying; yam is heavy and transport can wipe out the saving.
  4. Store well: in a dry, shaded, airy place, off the floor, not piled high, and checked weekly for rot.
  5. Eat the weakest first and remove any tuber that starts to rot, because rot spreads.

Worked example: bulk buy versus weekly buying

All figures are illustrative. A family eats 3 medium tubers a week. Bought weekly before harvest at ₦4,000 each, 12 weeks costs 3 x 12 x 4,000 = ₦144,000. Bought in bulk after harvest at ₦2,800 each, 36 tubers cost ₦100,800, plus ₦6,000 transport, so ₦106,800. If 4 tubers rot in storage, the family must replace them at the later price: 4 x ₦4,000 = ₦16,000, for a total of ₦122,800. The saving is ₦144,000 - ₦122,800 = ₦21,200, about 15%. Without any rot it would be ₦37,200. Storage quality decides most of the gain.

Buying closer to the farm

Some Enugu households buy yam from relatives or village markets in farming areas of the state rather than in the city. Prices at source can be lower because the trader's transport and margin are not yet added, but the saving only holds if you count your own transport and time.

  • Ask a relative to buy and hold tubers in the village until you collect, so you are not paying for a special trip.
  • Agree the number and size of tubers before money is sent, and ask for a photo before they are loaded.
  • Share a vehicle with others buying at the same time to split transport.
  • Collect within a short time of purchase; tubers bruised in transit rot faster.

Small food businesses that cook yam daily can save most from timing, because they buy in quantity every week. Logging the price per tuber every week for a year shows when to stock up.

Planning around the season

  • Shift meals towards what is in season; it is the simplest saving.
  • Buy storable staples such as garri when prices are moderate, not just before December, when festive demand pushes prices up (see December in Enugu).
  • Split bulk purchases with a neighbour or relative if you lack storage.
  • Keep a simple price log for your three main foods; after a year you will know your own market's cycle.

For the trade-offs of buying in bulk, see buying foodstuff in bulk on credit, and for where to buy, Enugu's smaller markets.

Context: incomes

Food takes a large share of household budgets. The Enugu State minimum wage is ₦80,000 a month from October 2024 (Federal Ministry of Information, Oct 2024); at the illustrative pre-harvest price above, a week's yam for a family would cost ₦12,000, or 15% of that wage, which shows why timing purchases matters.

Where Pryme fits

A Flexible Savings Box lets you put money aside in the months before harvest so you can buy in bulk when prices ease. A Personal Assistant can remind you to check prices as the season turns.

Questions people ask

When is yam cheap in Enugu?

Usually after harvest, when new yam reaches markets around the time communities hold their New Yam festivals. Dates vary by community and year, so watch prices for a few weeks.

Why is yam expensive before the New Yam festival?

Markets are selling from stored stock that is running down, and many communities do not sell new yam publicly until the festival is held.

How do I store yam so it does not rot?

Keep tubers in a dry, shaded, airy place off the floor, avoid piling them high, check weekly and remove any that start to rot.

Is it cheaper to buy yam in bulk?

Often, if you buy after harvest and store well. In our worked example a bulk buy saved about 15% after allowing for some rot and transport.
