Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Loans

MPR and your loan rate: how a CBN decision reaches you

The CBN reset the MPR in September 2026. How a policy decision reaches bank lending rates, which loans move, and how to recompute your instalment.

The short answer

The Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) is the CBN's benchmark rate; banks do not lend at it, but it shapes what they pay for funds and so what they charge. Variable-rate bank loans and overdrafts linked to a bank's prime or reference rate can move after an MPR change, while fixed-rate loans and most loan app loans do not. As at October 2026 the MPR is 23%, reset at the 21–22 September 2026 MPC meeting.

When the news says the Central Bank of Nigeria has cut or raised the MPR, borrowers want to know one thing: does my loan change? The answer depends on how your loan is priced, and whether your lender chooses to pass the change on. This guide explains the chain from the CBN's decision to your instalment, using the latest decision as the reference point.

What the CBN decided, as at October 2026

According to the CBN's Monetary Policy Decisions page, the Monetary Policy Committee at its 307th meeting on 21 and 22 September 2026 decided to:

  • reset the MPR at 23%;
  • recalibrate the standing facilities corridor to +50/−300 basis points around the MPR;
  • retain the cash reserve requirement for deposit money banks at 45%.

At the two previous meetings, in May and July 2026, the MPR was retained at 26.5%. So September's decision lowered the benchmark by 3.5 percentage points. Check the CBN's decisions page for any later meeting before relying on this figure.

How the MPR travels to a loan rate

  1. The corridor. With a +50/−300 corridor, the rate at which banks can borrow from the CBN overnight sits 0.5 points above MPR (23.5% on the current figure) and the rate for depositing with it sits 3 points below (20%). These anchor short-term interbank rates.
  2. Bank funding costs. Interbank, treasury bill and deposit rates tend to follow the corridor, with a lag. The cash reserve requirement also matters: money held at the CBN cannot be lent, which raises the cost of what can.
  3. Prime and maximum lending rates. Each bank sets a prime lending rate for its best borrowers and charges others a margin above it. The CBN publishes industry prime and maximum lending rates on its Money Market Indicators page.
  4. Your loan. If your contract links your rate to the bank's prime or reference rate, a change there can change your rate.

Why your rate may not move straight away

Several things slow the pass-through. Banks hold deposits and other funding agreed at earlier rates, so their average cost of funds changes gradually. Many loan contracts allow repricing only on set review dates, or after notice to the borrower. Banks also price in their view of risk: if they expect inflation or defaults to stay high, they may keep margins wide even after a cut. And a very high cash reserve requirement, such as the 45% retained in September 2026, limits how much of each deposit can be lent, which supports lending rates. The same lag works in reverse when the MPR rises, though borrowers often notice increases faster because they are written into review clauses.

Savers feel the change too. Deposit and savings rates tend to follow the corridor down after a cut, so the return on fixed deposits and savings products may fall over the following months.

Which loans move and which do not

Loan typeLikely to move after an MPR change?
Variable-rate term loans from banks (business, mortgage, some personal)Yes, if the contract links the rate to a reference rate and allows repricing
OverdraftsOften, because they are usually priced off a reference rate and reviewed regularly
Fixed-rate personal and salary loansNo, for the agreed tenor, unless the contract allows changes
Loan app loans with a fixed chargeNo; the charge is fixed when you accept, though new loans may be priced differently
New loansPriced at the lender's rate on the day you apply

Terms can carry both a fixed figure and a reference to a variable rate. GTBank's QuickCredit page, for example, quotes 2.95% a month while a clause refers to the bank's prime lending rate "from time to time"; ask your lender which governs.

Worked example: what a rate cut does to an instalment

Example figures only. A ₦5,000,000 variable-rate loan over 36 months at 32% a year. The monthly instalment is ₦217,772.02. After 12 payments the balance is ₦3,824,086.28. The bank then reprices the loan to 29% for the remaining 24 months.

  • New instalment: ₦211,851.95.
  • Monthly saving: ₦5,920.07.
  • Saving over the remaining 24 months: ₦142,081.68.

Some banks keep the instalment the same and shorten the tenor instead. Ask which method your bank uses. Our guide to variable-rate loans shows the calculation in the other direction.

What to check first

  1. Read your offer letter for words such as "variable", "prime", "reference rate" or "subject to review".
  2. Ask the bank whether it has changed its prime rate since the September 2026 decision.
  3. Request a revised schedule if your rate changes.
  4. For a new loan, compare offers after the decision rather than before; see is there a maximum interest rate in Nigeria.

Where Pryme fits

The cost of a Loan on Spaces, lent by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank, is set out in the agreement you accept before anything is drawn. Savers can see current Savings Box rates in the app; see Savings Boxes.

Questions people ask

What is the current MPR in Nigeria?

As at October 2026 it is 23%, reset at the CBN MPC meeting of 21–22 September 2026. Check the CBN's Monetary Policy Decisions page for any later change.

Will my bank loan interest reduce when the CBN cuts the MPR?

Only if your loan is variable and linked to a reference rate the bank lowers. Fixed-rate loans stay the same for their tenor.

What is the difference between MPR and prime lending rate?

MPR is the CBN's policy benchmark. Prime lending rate is what a bank charges its lowest-risk borrowers. The CBN publishes industry prime and maximum lending rates.

Do loan apps follow the MPR?

Not directly. Most loan app charges are fixed when you accept, though their pricing of new loans may shift with funding costs.
