Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Monthly medication costs: how to spread them without stress

For high blood pressure, diabetes, asthma and other long-term conditions, medicine is a monthly bill. How to plan it, cut it and avoid borrowing for it.

The short answer

Treat long-term medication as a fixed monthly bill: price it, set the money aside on payday and buy on a regular cycle so you never run out. Credit can bridge a one-off gap, such as a new prescription or a price rise, but borrowing every month for the same medicine adds a recurring cost you can usually avoid.

Medicine as a fixed bill

Millions of Nigerians live with conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, asthma, sickle cell disease or thyroid problems that need medicine every month. When medicine is bought only when the pack runs out, it competes with whatever else is due that week, and doses get missed. Treating it like rent or electricity, a known amount on a known date, is the single most useful change.

Step 1: price your monthly list

Write down every regular medicine, the dose and how long a pack lasts. Then get the price from your usual pharmacy and one other registered pharmacy.

Medicine (example)Pack lastsPrice per pack (example)Monthly cost
Blood pressure tablet A30 days₦9,000₦9,000
Blood pressure tablet B30 days₦6,500₦6,500
Diabetes tablet15 days₦4,000₦8,000
Test strips50 tests₦12,000₦7,200
Total₦30,700

These are illustrative examples only, not market prices. Your own list is what matters.

Step 2: cut the cost safely

  • Ask about equivalent brands. The same active ingredient from another registered manufacturer may be cheaper. Only switch with your doctor's or pharmacist's agreement.
  • Check insurance. If you are enrolled with an HMO or a scheme under the National Health Insurance Authority framework, find out which of your medicines are covered and where to collect them.
  • Ask about larger packs. A three-month supply can be cheaper per day once your dose is stable.
  • Stay with one pharmacy. A pharmacist who knows your history can spot interactions and may tell you when prices are about to change.
  • Avoid unregistered sellers. A lower price from an unregistered shop or street seller is not a saving if the product is falsified. NAFDAC's Greenbook lists registered drugs.

Step 3: set the money aside on payday

Move the monthly medicine amount into a separate pot the day your income arrives, before other spending. Then buy on the same day each month, a few days before your current pack runs out.

Step 4: build a one-month buffer

The safest position is one month of medicine in hand, or one month of the cost in savings. Build it slowly: if your monthly cost is ₦30,700, saving an extra ₦5,000 a month gives you a full month's buffer in about six months. After that, a late salary or a price rise does not interrupt treatment.

Where credit fits, and where it does not

SituationCredit sensible?
A new prescription costs more than this month's budgetYes, for the gap, once
Price rise this month, budget not yet adjustedYes, for the difference, while you update the budget
Salary late, medicine running outYes, for one cycle, with repayment after salary
Borrowing for the same medicine every monthNo, adjust the budget or seek cheaper options
Borrowing to buy a large stock in advanceOnly if the saving per day is larger than the cost of credit

If you are borrowing for medicine every month, speak to your doctor about cost. Prescribers can sometimes choose a different drug or combination with the same effect at a lower price.

A worked example

These figures are illustrative examples only, not Pryme rates.

Mr Okafor's monthly list costs ₦30,700. His doctor adds a new tablet costing ₦8,000 a month, and the new cost lands three days before payday.

  • He borrows ₦8,000 once, with repayment due after his salary.
  • From next month, he raises his payday set-aside to ₦38,700.
  • He asks the pharmacist about an equivalent brand for one existing tablet and saves ₦2,000 a month, bringing the total to ₦36,700.

One small loan bridges the change. The budget, not credit, absorbs it from then on.

Talking to your doctor about cost

Many patients never mention cost to their doctor, and many doctors assume the price is manageable unless told otherwise. Saying plainly that the monthly bill is hard to meet is useful information for a prescriber. They may be able to:

  • Choose a different medicine in the same class that costs less.
  • Combine two tablets into one combination product, or the reverse, depending on price.
  • Adjust how often you need tests or review visits.
  • Point you to a clinic or programme that supplies certain medicines at lower cost.

Never stop or reduce a long-term medicine on your own to save money. A missed course for blood pressure or diabetes can lead to costs far larger than the medicine itself.

Family members abroad or in another city

Many people pay for a parent's medicine from elsewhere. Paying the pharmacy directly, rather than sending cash, keeps the money for its purpose and gives you a receipt. Our guide to paying bills in Nigeria for family from abroad covers the options.

Where Pryme fits

A Flexible Savings Box can hold the monthly medicine amount, and a Fixed Box can hold the buffer. If a one-off gap appears, Pryme customers may be offered Loans on Spaces, lent by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank and spendable only with merchants in Spaces, including pharmacies; the amount, cost and repayment date are shown before you accept. Your Personal Assistant can remind you of refill dates. For a single prescription, see paying for prescriptions on credit.

Questions people ask

How can I reduce the cost of my blood pressure drugs?

Ask your doctor or pharmacist about equivalent registered brands, check insurance cover, and consider larger packs once your dose is stable.

Is it okay to borrow money for monthly medication?

For a one-off gap, yes. If you borrow every month, adjust the budget and talk to your doctor about cost.

Does NHIA or HMO cover chronic medication?

It depends on your plan. Ask your HMO which medicines are covered and which pharmacies you must use.

How do I make sure I never run out of medicine?

Buy on a fixed date a few days before the pack runs out, and build a one-month buffer of medicine or savings.
