Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Court-ordered account freeze (Mareva order) explained

A Mareva injunction is a court order that freezes a defendant's assets before trial. Who obtains it, why it binds your bank, and how it is set aside.

The short answer

A Mareva injunction is a freezing order made by a court in a civil case, usually on a claimant's application and often before the defendant is heard, to stop the defendant moving or spending assets while the claim is decided. Your bank must obey it until the court discharges or varies it; the account holder's route out is an application to the same court to set it aside, or an appeal, and Nigerian courts have set such orders aside where facts were suppressed.

If your bank tells you a 'court order' froze your account and you were never in court, you may be the defendant in a civil claim where the claimant asked for a Mareva injunction. This is different from an EFCC or ICPC freeze. No crime need be alleged. Someone, often a lender or a business partner, says you owe them money and has asked the court to keep your assets in place until the case is decided.

What a Mareva injunction does

The order restrains named parties from dealing with assets, which can include bank accounts and other assets. Two widely reported Nigerian cases show its reach:

  • Access Bank v Seplat (2020–2021). The Federal High Court in Lagos granted a Mareva order on 23 November 2020 that froze Seplat's accounts and was followed by the sealing of its offices, with a receiver/manager appointed (The Guardian, 26 January 2021).
  • First Bank v General Hydrocarbons Ltd (2024–2025). The Federal High Court in Lagos granted First Bank an ex parte order on 30 December 2024 freezing the accounts and assets of GHL and its directors (ThisDay, 29 January 2025).

In both, a bank was the claimant and a borrower or related party the defendant, but the order is available in other civil disputes too.

Who obtains it and how

The claimant's lawyer applies to the court. In the GHL case the application was made ex parte, meaning without the defendant being present; the defendant learns of it when the bank applies the order or the order is served. The order names the court and the suit number, for example FHC/L/CS/2378/2024 in the GHL case.

The precise test a Nigerian court applies is set by case law that we have not summarised here; your lawyer will read the claimant's affidavit and the ruling to see what the court relied on.

Why your bank will not release the money

A bank that holds an account subject to a court order must comply with it. Templars' 2025 review cites the Supreme Court in Ngere v Okuruket (2014): court orders must be obeyed until set aside, even where the court is later found to have lacked jurisdiction. Complaining to the branch or the CBN will not lift a court order. Only the court, or a higher court, can.

How a Mareva order is set aside

  1. Get the papers. Ask your bank for the suit number and a copy of the order, and have your lawyer obtain the motion, affidavit and any exhibits from the court registry.
  2. Apply to discharge or vary. Seplat and its co-defendants filed applications to discharge the order at the Federal High Court in December 2020 (The Guardian).
  3. Point to non-disclosure. In the GHL case the same court set aside its own order after finding the bank had suppressed facts, including a subsisting order of a court of concurrent jurisdiction (ThisDay).
  4. Offer security if you need access now. In the Seplat case the Court of Appeal ordered the accounts unblocked on condition of a $20 million bank guarantee in the Chief Registrar's name, finding the freeze could cause irreparable damage.
  5. Appeal if the trial court refuses, as Seplat did.
Ex parte
Granted on one side's application, without hearing the other side first.
Discharge
The court cancels its order.
Vary
The court changes the order, for example to allow certain payments to continue.
Suit number
The court's reference for the case; you need it to find the file.

How it differs from an agency or bank freeze

Mareva injunctionEFCC or NFIU stop orderBank fraud-desk PND
Who asks for itA private claimant in a civil caseA law enforcement or intelligence agencyYour bank, often on another bank's complaint
Who decidesA judgeThe agency, for up to 72 hours; then the Federal High CourtThe bank, under CBN circulars and your account terms
AllegationA debt or civil claimSuspected unlawful activitySuspected fraud or a mistaken transfer
How it endsDischarged, varied, set aside on appeal, or the case endsLapses after 72 hours unless a court orders the funds blockedComplaint settled, or a court decides

The stop-order limit comes from section 7(6) and 7(8) of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act 2022. The fraud-desk power comes from the CBN circular of 11 June 2015, as summarised by Templars. Knowing which of the three you face tells you whether the answer lies with a judge, an agency or your bank's compliance team.

What to check first

  • Which court, which suit number, and the date of the order.
  • Whether the order covers all your accounts or a stated sum.
  • Whether there is a return date when the court will hear both sides.
  • Whether any earlier order in another case conflicts with it, as in the GHL ruling.
  • Your regular outgoings, so your lawyer can ask the court to allow essential payments.

To compare this with other restrictions see hold, PND or freeze and how long a bank can keep an account frozen. If the claim is about a loan, can a bank freeze your account for loan default covers the lender's side, and getting out of debt in Nigeria sets out a repayment plan.

Questions people ask

What is a Mareva injunction in Nigeria?

A civil court order freezing a defendant's assets, such as bank accounts, while a claim is decided, so they cannot be moved or spent.

Can a court freeze my account without hearing me?

Yes, ex parte orders are made before the other side is heard. In First Bank v GHL the order was granted ex parte on 30 December 2024 and later set aside.

How do I unfreeze an account frozen by a court?

Through your lawyer, apply to the court that made the order to discharge or vary it, or appeal. The bank cannot lift it on its own.

Can I use some money while the Mareva order stands?

Only if the court varies the order or attaches conditions, as when the Court of Appeal required a $20 million guarantee in the Seplat case.
