Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Life in Lagos

Lagos pharmacies and Loans on Spaces: what to check first

Choosing a registered pharmacy in Lagos, planning repeat medicines, and when it makes sense to use a Loans on Spaces offer at a Spaces pharmacy.

The short answer

In Lagos, start with a pharmacy whose premises are registered with the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria and has a pharmacist on duty, then plan repeat medicines monthly so you are not buying in a rush. Loans on Spaces can be used at pharmacies that are Spaces merchants in Lagos, and is most useful for spreading a known prescription cost to a repayment date after your next income.

The Lagos pharmacy landscape

Lagos has every kind of medicine seller: large pharmacy chains on the main roads of Ikeja and Lekki, community pharmacies on residential streets in Yaba, Surulere and Ikorodu, hospital pharmacies, and patent medicine vendors in markets and bus parks. They are not the same thing. A community pharmacy must have its premises registered with the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria (PCN) and be run under a registered pharmacist. A patent medicine shop is limited to a narrower list of over-the-counter products.

For anything prescribed, and for ongoing medicines such as blood pressure or diabetes treatment, use a registered pharmacy. Our guide to checking a pharmacy and its medicines covers how to tell the difference.

Quick checks at the counter

  • Look for the PCN premises licence on display. The PCN's registration guidelines require premises to be registered and licences renewed.
  • Ask to speak to the pharmacist, not only the sales attendant, when you collect a new prescription.
  • Check expiry dates and that packaging is sealed. Refuse medicines in torn or relabelled packs.
  • Ask for a receipt with the product name and quantity. You may need it for an employer health scheme or a refund.

Ilera Eko and what you still pay at the pharmacy

Lagos State runs a health insurance scheme, Ilera Eko, managed by the Lagos State Health Management Agency (LASHMA). The state describes enrolment as mandatory for residents and has said access to state-owned facilities depends on it. The scheme covers primary care and a range of services, and flexible instalment payments have been introduced for premiums.

Even when you are enrolled, people often still buy some medicines at a community pharmacy: items not on the plan, top-ups between clinic visits, or treatment for family members who are not covered. That spending is what usually needs a plan. Our guide to healthcare costs in Lagos looks at the wider picture.

Planning repeat medicines: a worked example

Mrs A in Ikorodu buys two monthly medicines for her husband and occasional items for the children. The amounts are examples only.

ItemExample monthly costPredictable?
Blood pressure tablets (30 days)₦18,000Yes
Diabetes medicine (30 days)₦24,000Yes
Children's fever and cough items₦6,000 on averagePartly
Example monthly total₦48,000

Because ₦42,000 of that is predictable, she moves it into a savings box on payday so the refill is covered. In a month when a school-fee payment lands in the same week, she uses part of a Loans on Spaces offer at a Spaces pharmacy for the refill, chooses a repayment date after her next salary, and reads the full cost before accepting. She does not borrow for the unpredictable items; a small cash buffer covers those.

When using credit at a pharmacy makes sense, and when it does not

Reasonable
A known prescription that cannot wait, a repayment date after income you are sure of, and a cost you have read and accepted in the app.
Think again
Borrowing every month for the same medicines. That is a budget gap; a refill plan or a cheaper equivalent discussed with your pharmacist will help more.
Not a substitute for care
Credit does not replace a doctor's visit. If symptoms are serious, go to a clinic or hospital first.

Late nights, weekends and traffic

Lagos traffic changes how people buy medicines. A pharmacy across the Third Mainland Bridge or on the far side of the Lekki toll is not useful at 10pm when a child has a fever. Two habits help:

  1. Identify, in advance, one registered pharmacy close to home and one close to work, and note their opening hours. Some larger outlets in Ikeja, Surulere and Lekki open late or on Sundays; confirm before you rely on them.
  2. Keep a small home kit of the basics your doctor or pharmacist recommends for your family, checked for expiry every few months, so a night-time trip is the exception rather than the rule.

If you use delivery, choose a registered pharmacy that delivers rather than a seller on social media. Ask for the pharmacy's name and premises details, and check the pack on arrival before the rider leaves. Medicines that need to stay cool, such as insulin, should travel in a cool bag; ask how they will be kept on the way.

For a true emergency with no money to hand, see what to do in a pharmacy emergency.

Where Pryme fits

With a Pryme Personal Account, a Flexible Savings Box can hold your monthly medicine money, and your Personal Assistant can remind you a few days before the refill is due. If you have a Loans on Spaces offer, you can use it at pharmacies in Spaces across Lagos; the amount, cost and repayment date are shown before you accept, and nothing is drawn until you do. For prescriptions specifically, see paying for prescriptions on credit.

Questions people ask

How do I know a pharmacy in Lagos is registered?

Look for the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria premises licence on display and ask for the pharmacist. A registered pharmacy should have both.

Does Ilera Eko cover medicines from any pharmacy?

Ilera Eko works through its own network of providers. Ask LASHMA or your chosen facility which pharmacies and medicines your plan covers.

Can I buy drugs on credit in Lagos?

Yes, at pharmacies that are Spaces merchants, if you have a Loans on Spaces offer and accept the agreement shown in the app.

What is the difference between a pharmacy and a chemist in Lagos?

A pharmacy is registered with the PCN and run under a pharmacist. A patent medicine shop sells a limited list of over-the-counter products.
