Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Banking how-tos

Why Kuda deducts ₦50 on some inflows

Kuda used to deduct ₦50 from inflows of ₦10,000 or more. Since 1 January 2026 the sender pays instead. What changed, what is exempt and what to check.

The short answer

The ₦50 Kuda used to deduct from payments of ₦10,000 or more coming into your account was a government transfer levy. From 1 January 2026, under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025, Kuda says the ₦50 stamp duty is charged to the sender instead, so you should no longer see it on inflows; you pay it when you send ₦10,000 or more, with exemptions for salaries and transfers between your own Kuda accounts.

What the ₦50 was

Before 2026, Nigerian banks deducted ₦50 from the recipient of electronic transfers of ₦10,000 or more. It was commonly called the electronic money transfer levy (EMTL). Techeconomy's January 2026 report describes the EMTL as "typically taken from the receiver of the funds". Kuda applied it like every other bank, and many customers noticed it because Kuda otherwise advertises low charges.

Kuda is clear that it keeps none of this money. Its stamp duty page says it is "a Federal Government charge that all financial institutions have been directed to apply" and that Kuda hands over the whole charge.

What changed on 1 January 2026

Kuda's "Important update about stamp duty" (modified January 2026) says that, based on the Nigeria Tax Act 2025, the ₦50 charge previously taken from each payment of ₦10,000 or more into a Kuda or Kuda Business account is now paid by the sender, from Thursday 1 January 2026.

Before 1 Jan 2026From 1 Jan 2026
Who pays the ₦50RecipientSender
Threshold₦10,000 or more₦10,000 or more
Seen on your Kuda account whenMoney came inYou send money out

What is not charged

Kuda lists these exemptions:

  • Transfers under ₦10,000.
  • Transfers to pay salaries.
  • Transfers between personal Kuda accounts that belong to you.
  • Transfers between Kuda Business accounts that belong to your business.

Techeconomy's report, based on a First Bank customer notice, describes the same structure across banks and adds that the charge is one-off per qualifying transaction, not cumulative.

So why did I see ₦50 on an inflow?

  • The transaction was before January 2026. Older statements show the levy on inflows.
  • You are looking at an outgoing transfer. Since January 2026 the ₦50 sits on your transfers out of ₦10,000 or more. Check whether the line is a debit linked to a transfer you made.
  • It is a different charge. Kuda charges ₦10 plus VAT on transfers beyond its 25 free transfers a month, and ₦50 plus VAT on single transfers above ₦1 million. These are fees, not stamp duty.

If none of these fits, tap the line in your history and use Report This Transaction, or ask in chat. Kuda says it charges stamp duty only as directed.

Stamp duty, VAT and fees: telling them apart

Stamp duty (₦50)
Government charge on transfers of ₦10,000 or more, paid by the sender since 1 January 2026; remitted in full to the Federal Government
Transfer fee (₦10)
Kuda's fee once your 25 free monthly transfers are used
VAT (7.5% of a fee)
Tax on Kuda's service fees only, never on the amount sent
Large transfer fee (₦50 + VAT)
Kuda fee on single transfers above ₦1 million

Kuda's VAT explainer stresses that VAT and stamp duty are "separate and unrelated charges". A ₦1.5 million transfer made after your free allowance is used could carry all three kinds of charge: stamp duty, the large transfer fee and VAT on that fee. Kuda Business accounts follow the same stamp duty rule, with transfers between accounts belonging to the same business exempt.

If you run payroll from a Kuda account, keep the salary narration clear and consistent. Kuda lists transfers made to pay salaries among the exemptions, and a clear record makes it easier to query any ₦50 that appears on a salary payment. Note too that the ₦50 is the same whether you send ₦10,000 or ₦10 million: it is a flat charge per qualifying transfer, not a percentage.

Worked example

Example only. In March 2026 you send ₦25,000 to a landlord, ₦8,000 to a friend and ₦40,000 to your other Kuda account, and your employer pays your salary into Kuda.

  • ₦25,000 to the landlord: ₦50 stamp duty (₦10,000 or more, not exempt).
  • ₦8,000 to a friend: no stamp duty (under ₦10,000).
  • ₦40,000 to your own Kuda account: no stamp duty (own personal Kuda accounts).
  • Salary received: no ₦50 deducted, because inflows are no longer charged.
  • Total stamp duty that month: ₦50.

Under the old rule, the ₦50 fell on you as recipient for qualifying inflows of ₦10,000 or more; Kuda's page does not list which inflows were exempt before 2026.

What it means for sellers and freelancers

If you are paid by many customers, the change helps: you receive the full amount and each customer bears the ₦50 on their side. If you pay many suppliers, you now carry ₦50 on each payment of ₦10,000 or more. Factor it into pricing rather than splitting payments below ₦10,000, which multiplies transfer fees once free transfers run out. See Kuda free transfers and charges.

This article explains the charge for information; it is not tax advice. For how stamp duty applies to documents such as loan agreements, see stamp duty on loan agreements.

Where Pryme fits

Businesses on Pryme can take payment by bank-transfer checkout free of charge. See checkout.

Questions people ask

Why did Kuda deduct ₦50 from my account?

Before 2026 it was a levy on inflows of ₦10,000 or more. Since 1 January 2026 the ₦50 stamp duty is charged to the sender on transfers of ₦10,000 or more.

Does Kuda still charge ₦50 on money received?

No. Kuda says that from 1 January 2026 you are no longer charged ₦50 on payments of ₦10,000 or more into your account.

Is stamp duty charged on transfers to my own Kuda account?

No. Transfers between personal Kuda accounts that belong to you are exempt, per Kuda.

Does Kuda keep the ₦50 stamp duty?

Kuda says it gains nothing and hands the entire charge to the Federal Government.
