Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Banking how-tos

Is 9PSB safe? What a payment service bank can and cannot do

9PSB is a CBN-licensed payment service bank. What that licence allows, what it bans, how deposits are protected and where the gaps in public detail are.

The short answer

9PSB says it is licensed by the CBN as a payment service bank. Under the CBN's 2020 guidelines, a PSB may take deposits from individuals and small businesses, which must be covered by the deposit insurance scheme, but may not lend, give guarantees or take foreign currency deposits, and must keep at least 75% of its deposits in CBN securities. Those rules limit risk, though a deposit beyond the insured sum is still exposed if a bank fails.

What a payment service bank is

A payment service bank (PSB) is a type of bank licence the CBN created to widen access to accounts and payments, especially for people outside the reach of branches. The CBN's Guidelines for Licensing and Regulation of Payment Service Banks in Nigeria (circular FPR/DIR/GEN/CIR/07/060, 27 August 2020) set out the rules. They require PSBs to operate mostly in rural and unbanked locations, with at least 25% of their service touch points in rural areas.

9PSB describes itself on its homepage as "the country's first payment service bank licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria". You can check that any bank you use is licensed by searching the CBN's list of financial institutions.

What a PSB can do

Under section 4.1 of the guidelines, a PSB may:

  • Accept deposits from individuals and small businesses, "which shall be covered by the deposit insurance scheme".
  • Carry out payments and remittances, including inbound cross-border personal remittances.
  • Issue debit and prepaid cards.
  • Operate e-wallets.
  • Provide financial advisory services.
  • Invest in Federal Government and CBN securities.

What a PSB cannot do

Section 4.2 lists what is prohibited. A PSB shall not:

  • "Grant any form of loans, advances and guarantees (directly or indirectly)".
  • Accept foreign currency deposits.
  • Deal in the foreign exchange market, except as the guidelines allow for inbound remittances.
  • Underwrite insurance.
  • Accept closed-scheme electronic value, such as airtime, as a deposit or payment.

The ban on lending is the key safety feature. A commercial bank's main risk is that borrowers fail to repay; a PSB cannot take that risk with your money. If someone offers you a "9PSB loan", it is either from another lender or a scam.

How your money is held

Liquidity rule
PSBs must keep not less than 75% of their deposit liabilities in CBN securities at any point in time (s.9.4).
Capital
Minimum capital of ₦5,000,000,000 (s.9.1).
Capital adequacy
Minimum 10%, or as the CBN prescribes (s.9.3).
Deposit insurance
Deposits must be covered by the deposit insurance scheme (s.4.1).

How much deposit insurance covers

The NDIC runs Nigeria's deposit insurance. Voice of Nigeria reported on 1 March 2026, quoting the NDIC's managing director, that cover is ₦5 million per depositor for deposit money banks, primary mortgage banks and mobile money operators, and ₦2 million for microfinance banks. That report did not name a figure for payment service banks, and we could not confirm one from an NDIC page. Ask 9PSB or the NDIC directly, and read our guide Does NDIC cover fintech wallets and PSB accounts? and NDIC deposit insurance limits.

What safe does and does not mean

  • Licensed means the CBN supervises the bank and can act if it breaks the rules. It does not mean the bank cannot fail.
  • Insured means you are paid up to the insured limit if the bank is closed. Money above the limit depends on recoveries.
  • Your own security matters as much: most losses come from stolen PINs and SIM swaps, not bank failure. 9PSB says it will never ask for your PIN.

Practical steps

  1. Use 9PSB for everyday payments and small balances, which is what PSBs are built for.
  2. If you hold a large sum, consider whether it exceeds the insured amount, and spread it if so.
  3. Upgrade your account so it carries your BVN and NIN, which also helps if you ever need to claim.
  4. Keep your contact details current; see 9PSB customer care.

How a PSB compares with other account types

Payment service bankMicrofinance bankCommercial bank
Takes depositsYes, individuals and small businessesYesYes
Can lendNoYesYes
NDIC cover reported (1 Mar 2026)Not stated in the report₦2 million₦5 million

The table is a simplification; each licence has more detail. The point for a saver is that a PSB carries less lending risk but also offers fewer products, and the insured sum is the safety net if anything goes wrong at any bank.

Warning signs to watch for

Bank failure is rare compared with fraud. The risks most 9PSB customers actually face come from people pretending to be the bank. Be wary of:

  • Offers of a "9PSB loan", which the licence does not allow.
  • Requests for your PIN or one-time code by phone, SMS or social media.
  • Agents who ask you to pay extra to "activate" or "unblock" an account.
  • Investment schemes promising high returns that ask you to pay into a 9PSB account; a bank account number says nothing about whether the scheme is lawful.

If you see any of these, stop and call 0700 220 0005, the number on 9PSB's own contact page.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme Financial Ltd is a technology company, not a bank. Naira deposits in a Pryme account are held by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Ltd, licensed by the CBN and insured by the NDIC up to the applicable limit; see how Pryme works.

Questions people ask

Is 9PSB a real bank?

Yes. 9PSB says it is licensed by the CBN as a payment service bank, a bank licence for deposits and payments that does not allow lending.

Is my money safe in 9PSB?

PSB deposits must be covered by deposit insurance, and 75% of deposits must sit in CBN securities. Cover has a limit, so very large balances carry more risk.

Can 9PSB give loans?

No. The CBN's PSB guidelines ban PSBs from granting any loans, advances or guarantees.

Is 9PSB insured by NDIC?

The CBN's guidelines require PSB deposits to be covered by the deposit insurance scheme. We could not confirm the PSB cover figure on an NDIC page; check with the NDIC.
