Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

How to read your Ikeja Electric prepaid meter balance

How to check units left on an Ikeja Electric prepaid meter, why key sequences differ by meter make, and how to track how fast you are using units.

The short answer

On most Ikeja Electric prepaid meters the remaining credit, in kWh units, is shown on the display by default or after a short key sequence that differs by meter make. The reliable way to find your sequence is the user manual for your meter model or Ikeja Electric customer care. Once you can read the balance, note it at the same time on two days to see how many units you use daily.

What the balance on your meter means

A prepaid meter counts down in kilowatt-hours (kWh), usually just called units. When you load a token, the units bought are added to the balance. As you use power, the balance falls. When it reaches zero, or a low threshold set in the meter, supply is cut until you load more. The balance is not in naira: the naira amount you paid was converted into units at your tariff at the time of purchase, which is why the same amount buys fewer units on Band A than on lower bands.

If you want to know how many units a given amount buys, see units for ₦5,000 on Ikeja Electric.

Finding the balance on your meter

Ikeja Electric customers have meters from several manufacturers. The key presses differ between them, so we describe where to look rather than list codes we could not verify from Ikeja Electric or the manufacturers.

  1. Look at the display with no keys pressed. Many meters cycle through or rest on the remaining credit, shown with a kWh label.
  2. If the display shows something else, such as time or instantaneous load, press the button marked for display or scroll, or the key your manual lists for credit. Some meters use a short number code followed by the enter key.
  3. On a split meter, use the indoor customer interface unit. The outdoor unit may have no display you can reach.
  4. Check the manual or card from the installer or Meter Asset Provider for the exact sequence for your model.
  5. If there is no manual, ask Ikeja Electric customer care for the balance key sequence for your meter make, giving your meter number.

Other readings worth knowing

Besides the credit, most meters can show a few other readings that help you manage your spending. Your manual will confirm which your meter supports.

Remaining credit
Units left before supply is cut
Instantaneous power
How much power is being drawn now, useful to spot a heavy appliance
Cumulative energy
Total units used since installation, useful for tracking
Last token
The units added by your most recent token
Meter number
The serial number to use when buying a token

Worked example: working out your daily use

This is an example with made-up readings, to show the method.

ReadingTimeBalance shown
Day 18:00 pm62.4 kWh
Day 28:00 pm56.1 kWh
Day 38:00 pm50.0 kWh

Use over two days is 62.4 minus 50.0, which is 12.4 kWh, or 6.2 kWh a day. At that rate, 50.0 kWh lasts about 8 days (50.0 divided by 6.2 is 8.06). Reading at the same time each day matters, because evening use is often heavier than daytime use.

If your units fall faster than your appliances explain, check for a fault, a neighbour connected to your meter, or a band or tariff change. Our guide to checking your electricity band helps with the last one.

Using the balance to plan purchases

Once you know your daily use, you can decide how often to buy and how much. Some households prefer one larger token a month so they are not caught out at night; others buy weekly to spread the cost. Either way, buy before the balance reaches the meter's low-credit warning, because vendors and networks occasionally have delays and you do not want to be waiting for a token in the dark.

  • Divide the balance by your daily use to see how many days you have left.
  • Multiply your daily use by the days until your next payday to see how many units you need to buy.
  • Recheck your daily use after any change in band, household size or appliances, such as a new freezer or air conditioner.

Our guide to budgeting for electricity in Lagos turns this into a monthly plan that includes backup power.

When the balance looks wrong

  • Units did not rise after a token: check the token was accepted and was for your meter number; see the token rejection guide.
  • Balance drops with everything switched off: switch off the main breaker and watch the reading. If it still falls, report a meter fault to Ikeja Electric.
  • Display is blank: check whether there is an outage on your street before assuming the meter is faulty.

Complaints go to Ikeja Electric first. NERC's published route then runs to the Forum office and the regulator, with the later steps going to the state regulator where one exists; in Lagos that is LASERC.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme's Personal Assistant can set reminders, so you can note your reading on the same day each week and be reminded to top up before you run out. Tokens can be bought through electricity bills in the app; nothing is paid until you approve it.

Questions people ask

How do I check units left on my Ikeja Electric meter?

Look at the display, or use the credit key sequence for your meter make listed in its manual. Ikeja Electric customer care can tell you the sequence for your meter.

Is the balance on my meter in naira or units?

Units, in kWh. The naira you paid was converted to units at your tariff when you bought the token.

Why is my prepaid meter units finishing fast?

Heavy appliances, a band or tariff change, a neighbour connected to your supply or a meter fault. Track daily use and report a fault if the balance falls with everything off.

Can I check my meter balance on my phone?

Only if your meter or vendor offers that. Otherwise read it on the meter or indoor unit.
