Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Bills

Moving house in IBEDC area: meter, debt and name change

What to do with the IBEDC meter, any recorded debt and the account name when you move in or out, and how to protect yourself from old debts.

The short answer

When you move into an IBEDC property, ask IBEDC to update the occupant record and confirm in writing whether any debt is recorded on the meter or account before you buy tokens, because recorded debt can be deducted from future token purchases. If you are moving out and own a MAP meter, IBEDC's FAQs say you must apply for a service transfer to move it within its franchise area; the meter belongs to IBEDC.

Why moving is the moment debts get passed on

Electricity debt in Nigeria usually sits on a meter or account, not on a person's phone number. If the previous occupant left unpaid estimated bills, back-billing or a meter-cost balance, a new tenant can find part of every token being diverted to that debt. The token receipt usually shows this as a separate line from energy and VAT; our planned guide on token breakdown, VAT and debt explains how to read it.

We could not open a current NERC or IBEDC page setting out the rule on whether a new occupant can be made to pay a previous occupant's debt. Rather than rely on what you hear, get IBEDC's position for your specific meter in writing before or immediately after you move in.

Moving in: a checklist

  1. Read the meter on the day you get the keys. Photograph the display showing the units balance, and the meter label showing the meter number.
  2. Ask the landlord or agent for the last token receipt or bill. It shows whether the last purchases had debt deducted.
  3. Buy a small token first. The receipt will show any debt deduction. If one appears, stop and contact IBEDC before buying more.
  4. Write to IBEDC (customercare@ibedc.com or the Make Complaints page) with your tenancy start date, meter number and photos. Ask (a) whether any debt is recorded, (b) when it arose, and (c) for the occupant record to be updated to you or to the landlord, as your tenancy requires.
  5. Put the deal in the tenancy agreement. State that electricity charges before your start date are the landlord's or the previous tenant's responsibility.

Moving out

  • Take a final photo of the meter display and keep your last receipts.
  • For postpaid accounts, ask IBEDC for a final reading and a closing bill, and pay it, so the account is not left with your name and a balance.
  • Do not remove the meter. IBEDC's MAP FAQs state that the meters belong to IBEDC, because the customer is refunded the meter cost.
  • If you paid for a MAP meter and are still receiving refunds through energy credit (IBEDC's FAQs give a 36-month refund period), ask IBEDC what happens to the remaining refund when you leave. Relocating within IBEDC's area requires a service transfer application to IBEDC, according to the FAQs.
  • Hand the incoming occupant or landlord the meter number and last receipt.

Changing the name on the account

A name change does not alter the meter, but it matters when you complain, apply for a refund or dispute a bill: IBEDC will deal with the account holder. Most tenants leave the account in the landlord's name; that is workable as long as the tenancy agreement says who pays what. If you own the property, or have a long lease, ask IBEDC at your Business Hub which documents it needs for a change of name; the pages we opened do not list them, so call 07001239999 first to avoid a wasted trip.

Worked example (illustrative)

Example only. A new tenant buys ₦5,000 of electricity and the receipt shows ₦1,500 taken for outstanding debt. Only ₦3,500 goes to energy (before VAT). At the Band A rate of ₦209.50/kWh in NERC's July 2025 order for IBEDC, ₦3,500 buys 3,500 ÷ 209.50 = about 16.7 kWh, against about 23.9 kWh for the full ₦5,000. That shortfall is the cost of an old debt you may not owe, which is why it is worth raising at once.

If IBEDC insists the debt is yours

Ask for the statement showing when each part of the debt arose. If it predates your tenancy, put your evidence in a written complaint and ask for it to be moved to the landlord's account or removed from the meter. If IBEDC does not resolve it, escalate to the NERC Forum, or OSERC in Oyo State since NERC transferred regulation there in 2024; see how to escalate an IBEDC complaint. Lagos readers have a separate guide: moving flat in Lagos.

Landlords: setting things up for the next tenant

Landlords can prevent most disputes by settling the meter between tenancies: read the meter, check the last receipt for any debt, clear or dispute it with IBEDC, and give the new tenant the meter number and a copy of the clean receipt. A short clause in each tenancy agreement on who pays electricity and how arrears are handled at the end of the tenancy saves arguments with IBEDC later.

Where Pryme fits

Buying tokens through Pryme bill payments gives you a dated record from your first day, and you can produce a verifiable statement through VerifyDoc.ai (receipts and statements) if IBEDC or a landlord questions when payments were made.

Questions people ask

Will I pay the previous tenant's IBEDC debt?

Debt recorded on a meter can be deducted from tokens. Ask IBEDC in writing whether debt is recorded and when it arose, and dispute any part that predates your tenancy.

Can I take my IBEDC prepaid meter when I move?

IBEDC's FAQs say MAP meters belong to IBEDC and moving within its area needs a service transfer application.

How do I change the name on my IBEDC account?

Ask at your Business Hub or call 07001239999 for the documents needed; the pages we checked do not list them.

How do I know if my new house meter has debt?

Buy a small token and check the receipt for a debt deduction line, then ask IBEDC to confirm.
