Ten years, one trunk

The business has changed shape four times and never changed what it was rooted in. Each version was built out of what the last one could not do.

2016E-commerce

An online grocery store, built out of a faulty tab. Selling the food was the easy part — taking the money for it, and moving it, turned out to be the business.

2018OjirehPrime Card

A prepaid card. The first time the company issued rather than resold, and the first time it carried the obligations that come with holding somebody else’s money.

2020Microfinance bank

PrymeSolid Allianze acquired — an existing bank with an existing licence. The perimeter stopped being someone else’s to draw.

2023Multicurrency

More than one currency on one balance, and the rebrand to Pryme. A Nigerian business could hold dollars without holding a second institution.

2026Agentic operations

Accounts that do the work rather than only hold value. Five agents on the account, inside a policy you write — which is where the new mark starts.

Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

AI agents

Human in the loop or on the loop: which do AI agents need?

In the loop means a person approves before the agent acts; on the loop means a person watches and can stop it. Which suits which task, and the legal angle.

The short answer

"Human in the loop" means a person must approve before the agent acts; "human on the loop" means the agent acts and a person monitors and can intervene. Most businesses need both: in the loop for decisions that are costly, irreversible or significant for a person, and on the loop for high-volume routine work with a clear record.

Two ways for a person to stay in charge

Every AI agent arrangement answers one question: at what point does a person get involved? There are two broad answers, and they are often confused.

Human in the loop
The agent prepares the action and stops. A person reviews and approves, edits or rejects it. Nothing happens until they do.
Human on the loop
The agent acts within agreed limits. A person monitors what it does, receives exceptions and can pause or reverse it.
Human out of the loop
The agent acts and nobody routinely reviews. Rarely appropriate for anything touching money, customers or legal obligations.

Neither "in" nor "on" is better in general. In the loop gives the strongest control but costs time and, as volumes grow, invites rubber-stamping. On the loop scales, but only works if the monitoring is real and the limits are tight.

Matching the mode to the task

A useful test has three parts: how much one error costs, whether it can be undone, and whether it significantly affects a person.

TaskSuggested modeWhy
Paying a known supplier below your ceilingOn the loopRoutine, reversible with effort, recorded
Paying a new payee or changed bank detailsIn the loopCommon fraud route, hard to recover
Answering a customer from published policyOn the loopHigh volume, low cost per error, sourced answer
Refusing a refund or closing an accountIn the loopSignificant for the customer, may engage legal rights
Drafting a sales proposalIn the loop before sendingCommits the business to price and terms
Filing a tax return or regulatory reportIn the loopA legal act signed by the business

What the law says about meaningful human involvement

Several regimes care about whether a person was really involved in a decision, not just present. This is general information, not legal advice.

  • UK. The UK GDPR, as amended by the Data (Use and Access) Act 2025, now sets out its rules on solely automated decisions with legal or similarly significant effects in articles 22A to 22D. The ICO explains that "solely automated" means there is no meaningful human involvement, and that safeguards include letting people make representations, obtain human intervention and contest decisions.
  • EU. Article 14 of the EU AI Act requires high-risk AI systems to be designed so that the people overseeing them can understand their limits, stay aware of over-reliance on outputs ("automation bias"), override or reverse outputs, and stop the system. Article 26 requires deployers to assign oversight to people with the competence, training and authority to do it.
  • Nigeria. Section 37 of the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 gives people the right not to be subject to a decision based solely on automated processing that has legal or similarly significant effects, with a right to human intervention and to contest the decision.

The practical lesson is the same in each place: a person who clicks "approve" on everything without reading is not meaningful involvement. If the mode is "in the loop", the reviewer needs the information, the time and the authority to say no.

Making "on the loop" real

On-the-loop oversight fails quietly. The agent keeps working, nobody reads the log, and an error repeats for weeks. To avoid that:

  1. Set hard limits the agent cannot cross, so that monitoring is a backstop rather than the only control.
  2. Send exceptions to a named person, not a shared inbox.
  3. Sample routine work weekly: pick ten actions at random and check them against their sources.
  4. Keep a stop control that works immediately and that more than one person can use.
  5. Record every action with its source so a review can trace what happened. Our guide to audit trails for AI agents covers what to record.

Worked example (illustrative)

A Toronto clinic uses an agent for appointment reminders and billing queries. Reminders and answers drawn from the published fee schedule run on the loop, with the practice manager sampling twenty conversations each Friday. Any request to waive a fee, and any billing dispute above C$250, is in the loop: the agent prepares the case and the manager decides. Over a month, the manager spends about two hours on review instead of answering every query personally.

Avoiding the rubber stamp

The weak point of "in the loop" is volume. If a person approves two hundred items a day, approval becomes a reflex. Keep the in-the-loop queue small by moving well-evidenced routine work on the loop, and by asking the agent to show only what differs from normal. We look at this problem in more detail in approval fatigue: how to stop rubber-stamping AI agents.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme Business agents combine both modes. Below the ceiling in their mandate, they act and record each action with its source, which is on-the-loop oversight. Above it, they stop and a person decides, which is in the loop. The Chief of Staff executes nothing itself; it routes work and brings the owner only the decisions they must make, in a morning brief.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between human in the loop and human on the loop?

In the loop means a person approves each action before it happens. On the loop means the agent acts within limits while a person monitors, handles exceptions and can stop it.

Is human on the loop enough for payments?

For routine payments to known suppliers below a set ceiling, many businesses accept it, provided there are hard limits and regular review. New payees, changed bank details and large amounts should stay in the loop.

Does the law require a human in the loop?

Not for everything. In the UK, EU and Nigeria the main rules concern solely automated decisions with legal or similarly significant effects on people, and high-risk AI uses under the EU AI Act. Take advice for your situation.

What makes human review meaningful?

The reviewer must understand what they are approving, have the information and time to check it, and have the authority to reject or change it. Approving without reading does not count.
