Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

GTBank SMS alert charge and how to switch to email alerts

What GTBank charges per SMS alert since May 2025, why it shows up as a monthly debit, what the CBN rules say, and how to move to email-only alerts.

The short answer

GTBank raised its SMS transaction alert fee from ₦4 to ₦6 per message from 1 May 2025, as reported by Techeconomy. Under the CBN Guide to Charges, banks may recover the cost of SMS alerts on transactions you start, but not on bank-initiated entries, and email alerts carry no charge. To stop SMS alerts, GTBank asks you to fill an opt-out form and send it to its support email; keep email or app notifications on so you still see every debit.

If you look closely at a GTBank statement you will often find a debit described as SMS alert charges. It is small, but on a busy account it adds up, and it can surprise people who never noticed it before the 2025 increase. Here is what the charge is, the rule behind it, and how to cut it without losing sight of your account.

What GTBank charges

Techeconomy reported on 30 April 2025 that, from Thursday 1 May 2025, GTBank's SMS transaction alert fee would rise from ₦4 to ₦6 per message, an increase of 50%. We did not find a GTBank tariff page stating the current figure in October 2026, so check a recent statement or ask GTConnect if you want to confirm what you are paying today.

Worked example

Example only, at ₦6 per alert: an account with 60 debits and 40 credits in a month that each trigger an SMS gets 100 alerts, costing 100 × ₦6 = ₦600 for the month, or about ₦7,200 a year at the same activity. A business account with 400 alerts a month would pay ₦2,400 a month.

Why it appears as one monthly debit

Banks commonly add up the alerts sent during a period and debit the total in one line, rather than charging ₦6 every time a message is sent. That is why you may see one larger SMS charge near the end of the month. If the amount looks high, count roughly how many transactions you made that month and multiply by the per-alert fee. A figure far above that is worth querying.

What the CBN rules say

The CBN Guide to Charges (effective 1 January 2020) covers alerts directly:

  • SMS alerts are allowed to be charged on a cost-recovery basis for customer-induced transactions.
  • Alerts for bank-induced entries, such as the bank's own charges, should not be charged to you.
  • Email alerts attract no charge.

The CBN published an exposure draft of a new guide in April 2026. We did not see a change to SMS alert rules in the summaries we read, but if the final guide takes effect, check whether alert charges are affected.

Charges you should not be paying

Because the CBN guide says bank-induced entries should not attract an alert charge, an SMS about the bank's own debit, such as a maintenance fee, the SMS charge itself or interest posting, should not be billed to you. If your monthly SMS debit seems to include those, ask GTConnect for the breakdown of alerts billed for the month. A fair request is the count of alerts and the transactions they relate to; compare that against your statement before you accept the figure.

Duplicate alerts are another source of overcharging. If you receive two SMS messages for one transaction, for example after a network delay, note the dates and mention them when you query the charge. Small amounts are easy to ignore, but on a business account with hundreds of transactions a month, duplicates and bank-induced alerts can make a noticeable difference over a year.

How to switch to email-only alerts

Techeconomy quoted GTBank as saying that opting out of SMS alerts only takes filling a form and sending it to the bank's support email. In practice:

  1. Make sure a current email address is on your account. If not, update it first at a branch or through GTConnect.
  2. Ask GTConnect (+234 1 448 0000 or enquiries@gtbank.com) for the SMS alert opt-out or alert preference form.
  3. Fill it in, choosing email alerts in place of SMS, and sign it with the signature the bank holds.
  4. Send it from the email address registered on the account and keep the reply as your record.
  5. Check the next month's statement to confirm the SMS charge has stopped.

What you give up

SMS reaches you without data and is hard to miss, which is why many people catch fraud from an SMS first. If you switch, turn on push notifications in GTWorld, and check email at least daily. Be careful with alerts sent to a shared email inbox, and treat any alert asking you to click a link or call a number as suspicious until you have confirmed it in the app.

Other ways to reduce the charge

  • Use fewer, larger transactions where it makes sense, since each one creates an alert.
  • Close accounts you do not use: an old account still generates alerts for interest and charges.
  • Review alert settings on joint and business accounts, where several people may be receiving SMS for the same transaction.

Other routine debits can be confused with SMS charges. Our guide to an unknown debit on your GTBank account lists the common ones, and GTBank card maintenance fee covers the card charge.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme uses in-app notifications rather than paid SMS, and sign-in uses an authenticator app instead of SMS codes. If you prefer alerts without a per-message cost, that is one option to compare.

Questions people ask

How much does GTBank charge for SMS alert?

Techeconomy reported that GTBank raised its SMS alert fee from ₦4 to ₦6 per message from 1 May 2025. Check a recent statement or GTConnect for the current figure.

How do I stop GTBank SMS alert charges?

Fill GTBank's SMS alert opt-out form and send it to the bank's support email from your registered address, choosing email alerts instead. Keep app notifications on.

Are email alerts free at GTBank?

The CBN Guide to Charges says email alerts attract no charge. Confirm your email address is current before switching.

Why is my GTBank SMS charge so high this month?

The charge is usually the month's alerts added together. Multiply your transaction count by the per-alert fee; if the debit is far higher, query it with GTConnect.
