Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Generator vs solar for a home in Asaba: the real cost

Petrol at South-South prices, upkeep and BEDC band hours against a labelled ₦4 million solar setup: when solar pays back in Asaba, and when not.

The short answer

Whether solar beats a generator in Asaba depends on how many hours you run the generator. In our labelled example, a home running a petrol generator five hours a day spends about ₦210,000 a month on fuel and upkeep, and a ₦4 million solar setup pays for itself in about 20 months; at two hours a day it takes about four years. Your BEDC band, which sets the minimum hours of grid supply, is the biggest factor in how many generator hours you need.

For many homes in Asaba, the real electricity bill is not the BEDC token but the petrol for the generator. Solar promises to cut that, but costs millions upfront. This guide compares the two with figures you can check, shows a break-even calculation, and explains why the answer is different on different streets.

Start with your grid supply

NERC's July 2025 supplementary order for BEDC, which supplies Asaba, set minimum daily supply for each tariff band: Band A at least 20 hours, B 16, C 12, D 8 and E 4. Band A cost ₦209.50 per kWh under that order. NERC has since issued a September 2026 MYTO order, so check your receipt for the current tariff. Actual supply may fall short of the band: a September 2026 ThisDay opinion piece described residents in Abraka, elsewhere in Delta, reporting supply of roughly one day on and one day off. Keep a simple log of grid hours for two weeks before you decide anything; it tells you how many hours you need to cover.

What a generator really costs

The National Bureau of Statistics price watch for May 2026, reported by Legit.ng, put average petrol at ₦1,596.25 a litre nationally and ₦1,623.84 in the South-South. Prices moved again later in 2026; in August, Legit.ng reported Dangote cutting its gantry price and marketers' pump prices around ₦1,210 to ₦1,220 a litre in some outlets. Use the price you actually pay.

Generator use (example only)5 hours a day2 hours a day
Fuel use at 0.8 litres an hour120 litres a month48 litres a month
Fuel at ₦1,623.84 a litre₦194,861₦77,944
Servicing, oil and repairs₦15,000₦15,000
Monthly total₦209,861₦92,944

Fuel use depends on the generator's size and load; check yours by filling the tank and timing how long it runs. Noise, fumes and the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning indoors are costs too, even if they do not appear on a receipt.

What solar costs upfront

Legit.ng reported in April 2026 that a buyer paid about ₦3.75 million for a 5kVA inverter, a 5kW lithium battery and eight 590W panels. Installation, cabling, mounting and protection devices add to that. In the example below we use ₦4 million all-in. A system that size can run lights, fans, a fridge, TV and laptops, but usually not air conditioners for long hours.

Break-even: a worked example

Example only. Assume solar covers the hours you would otherwise run the generator, and set aside ₦10,000 a month for solar upkeep and future battery replacement.

5 hours a day2 hours a day
Generator cost avoided₦209,861₦92,944
Less solar upkeep₦10,000₦10,000
Monthly saving₦199,861₦82,944
Months to recover ₦4,000,000about 20about 48

At five hours a day the system pays for itself in under two years; at two hours, about four years. If petrol falls to around ₦1,215 a litre, the five-hour generator cost drops to about ₦160,800 a month and break-even stretches to about 27 months. Lithium batteries also lose capacity over time, so a long payback period carries more risk.

A middle option: inverter and battery without panels

If your street gets reasonable grid supply with gaps of a few hours, an inverter and battery charged from the grid can bridge the gaps without panels. It costs less than a full solar system, but it depends on the grid to recharge: if supply is off for a whole day, the battery runs flat and you are back to the generator. It suits Band A and B streets with short outages better than streets with long ones. You can add panels later if the inverter supports them, so ask about that before you buy.

Whichever route you choose, have the system installed by someone who fits proper protection and earthing, and never run a generator indoors or near windows.

How to decide

  • Long generator hours, steady load: solar usually wins within two years.
  • Good band, short outages: a smaller inverter and battery without panels, charged from the grid, may be enough.
  • Renting: choose equipment you can take with you, and agree with the landlord on panel mounting.
  • Heavy loads: keep a generator for pumping water or air conditioning, and use solar for the rest.

What to check first

  1. Your band and actual grid hours for two weeks.
  2. Your generator's real fuel use per hour.
  3. An itemised quote: inverter, battery type and capacity, panels, installation, warranty terms.
  4. Who services the system locally and how fast they respond.

See also how to buy a BEDC token in Asaba and saving for an inverter or solar setup.

Where Pryme fits

A Fixed Savings Box can build the solar fund over months rather than borrowing for it (Savings Boxes), and you can buy BEDC tokens in the app (electricity).

Questions people ask

Is solar cheaper than generator in Asaba?

Over time, if you run a generator for several hours a day. In our labelled example a ₦4 million system paid back in about 20 months at five generator hours a day, and about 48 months at two.

How much is a 5kVA solar system in Nigeria?

Legit.ng reported a buyer paying about ₦3.75 million in April 2026 for a 5kVA inverter, 5kW lithium battery and eight 590W panels. Get itemised quotes, as prices change.

How many hours of light should Band A get?

Under NERC's July 2025 order for BEDC, Band A customers should receive at least 20 hours of supply a day.

How much petrol does a generator use?

It depends on size and load. Fill the tank and time how long it runs to find your own figure.
