Ten years, one trunk

The business has changed shape four times and never changed what it was rooted in. Each version was built out of what the last one could not do.

2016E-commerce

An online grocery store, built out of a faulty tab. Selling the food was the easy part — taking the money for it, and moving it, turned out to be the business.

2018OjirehPrime Card

A prepaid card. The first time the company issued rather than resold, and the first time it carried the obligations that come with holding somebody else’s money.

2020Microfinance bank

PrymeSolid Allianze acquired — an existing bank with an existing licence. The perimeter stopped being someone else’s to draw.

2023Multicurrency

More than one currency on one balance, and the rebrand to Pryme. A Nigerian business could hold dollars without holding a second institution.

2026Agentic operations

Accounts that do the work rather than only hold value. Five agents on the account, inside a policy you write — which is where the new mark starts.

Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

AI agents

How long to keep business records: a freelancer's guide

How long the UK, US and Canadian tax authorities expect self-employed people to keep records, what to keep, and how an AI agent keeps them complete.

The short answer

As general guidance: HMRC says UK self-employed people must keep records for at least five years after the 31 January submission deadline for the tax year; the IRS generally uses three years from filing, with longer periods in some cases; and the CRA generally expects six years from the end of the last tax year they relate to. An AI agent can file each receipt, invoice and statement against the right transaction so the record is complete when you need it.

Record-keeping is the least glamorous part of working for yourself, and the one that matters most when a tax authority asks a question. The rules differ by country, but the principle is the same everywhere: keep evidence for every figure in your return, for long enough. This is general information from official sources, not tax advice.

Retention periods at a glance

CountryGeneral ruleSource
UKAt least 5 years after the 31 January submission deadline of the relevant tax year; longer in some cases, such as a very late returnGOV.UK
USGenerally 3 years after filing; 6 years if income is substantially under-reported; 7 years for a bad-debt or worthless-securities loss claim; employment tax records at least 4 yearsIRS
CanadaGenerally 6 years from the end of the last tax year the records relate toCRA
NigeriaCheck current guidance from the Nigeria Revenue Service or an adviserNRS

Worked UK example, for illustration: records for the 2025–26 tax year support a return due by 31 January 2027, so on GOV.UK's rule they should be kept until at least 31 January 2032.

What to keep

  • Sales invoices and records of all income, in every currency
  • Receipts for expenses
  • Bank and payment statements for every business account
  • Contracts and agreements with clients and subcontractors
  • Records of money taken out for personal use
  • Exchange rates used for foreign-currency income and costs
  • Records for any assets, such as equipment, until the period runs out for the year you dispose of them, as the IRS notes for property

If you employ anyone, payroll records have their own rules. See paying subcontractors for contractor records.

Digital records

Tax authorities generally accept digital records if they are complete, legible and can be produced on request. In the UK, Making Tax Digital for Income Tax requires digital records for those in scope, with thresholds phasing in. A photograph of a receipt linked to the matching bank transaction is more useful than a box of paper, provided you can still read it years later.

How an AI agent keeps the record complete

  1. Captures each receipt and invoice as it arrives, from email or a photo.
  2. Matches it to the bank transaction, in its own currency.
  3. Categorises it under rules you set, flagging anything it is unsure about.
  4. Chases gaps: a transaction with no receipt goes on a short list for you.
  5. Keeps a trail: where each document came from and when it was matched.
  6. Holds retention dates, so nothing is deleted early.

Our explainers on AI bookkeeping and AI bank reconciliation cover the matching in more detail.

Separate business and personal money

Records are far easier to keep if business money runs through its own account. When personal and business spending mix, every transaction has to be sorted, and drawings are easy to miss. A separate account, with personal withdrawals recorded as drawings, makes the agent's matching more accurate and your return easier to support.

If you are asked for records

If a tax authority opens an enquiry or audit, you will usually be asked to produce records for specific periods or items. With records matched to transactions, you can find each one quickly. Do not delete anything relating to a period under enquiry, even if the normal retention period has passed, and take advice if the request is complex. The agent should hold a "do not delete" flag on any period you mark.

Records in more than one currency

If you earn in several currencies, keep each transaction in its original currency together with the rate used to convert it for your tax return, and the source of that rate. Tax authorities publish guidance on acceptable rates; the important thing is to apply a method consistently and be able to show it.

Where the agent stops

  • It can categorise, but whether an expense is allowable is a tax question for you or an adviser.
  • It can flag a missing receipt, but cannot create one. Never accept a reconstructed receipt as if it were original.
  • It can hold retention dates, but you decide when to delete, after checking nothing is under enquiry.

A worked example

Example only. Grace, a freelance translator in Ottawa, earns in C$, US$ and euros. Her agent matches each payment to the invoice, records the exchange rate used, and files expense receipts from her email. In March, it lists six transactions with no receipt. She finds four; for the other two she notes what they were. Her records for 2025 are set to be kept until at least the end of 2031 under the CRA's six-year rule.

Where Pryme fits

The Pryme Business Finance agent traces every figure to a posted journal with a named source and every balance to a live bank feed, across NGN, USD, GBP and EUR balances. The Compliance agent keeps an obligations register with filing dates. Neither replaces advice on what is deductible.
