Ten years, one trunk

The business has changed shape four times and never changed what it was rooted in. Each version was built out of what the last one could not do.

2016E-commerce

2018OjirehPrime Card

A prepaid card. The first time the company issued rather than resold, and the first time it carried the obligations that come with holding somebody else’s money.

2020Microfinance bank

PrymeSolid Allianze acquired — an existing bank with an existing licence. The perimeter stopped being someone else’s to draw.

2023Multicurrency

More than one currency on one balance, and the rebrand to Pryme. A Nigerian business could hold dollars without holding a second institution.

2026Agentic operations

Accounts that do the work rather than only hold value. Five agents on the account, inside a policy you write — which is where the new mark starts.

Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Fixed deposit or savings account for proof of funds?

Locked money is not always counted the same as cash you can spend. How UK, Canadian, Australian and German rules treat each, and how to choose.

The short answer

For most routes a savings or current account you control is the safer evidence, because officers want to see money that is available to you. A fixed deposit can still work where the rules accept it and you can show you can use it, and some routes are built around locked money, such as the German blocked account. Check the route's wording on access and control before you lock anything.

The question officers ask: can you use this money?

Proof of funds exists to show you can pay for fees and living costs. So the officer's real question is not what the account is called but whether the money is there, belongs to you and can be spent when you need it. A fixed deposit answers the first two well and the third less well, because breaking it early may cost interest or need the bank's agreement. A savings account answers all three, but shows every movement, so a balance that drops during the holding period is visible.

How the rules read, route by route

RouteWhat the official wording stressesEffect on a fixed deposit
UK (Appendix Finance)Account holder "must have control of the funds" (FIN 5.2); evidence must cover the whole period (FIN 7.3)Usable if you control it and the statement covers the period; read the specific route guidance
Canada Express EntryFunds must be available when you apply and when the permanent resident visa is issuedA deposit you cannot reach in time is a risk; a bank letter must list each account and balance
Canada study permitGIC listed as an example of proofA Canadian GIC is a form of term deposit the route itself names
Australia studentApplyBoard (Sept 2026) lists fixed deposit certificates among evidence typesCommonly used; confirm on Home Affairs' own page
Germany studentBlocked account, released in monthly amounts after arrivalLocked by design; a Nigerian fixed deposit does not replace it

Sources: GOV.UK Appendix Finance, IRCC's Express Entry and study permit pages, ApplyBoard Assist and Expatrio, all read in October 2026. We could not load the Australian Department of Home Affairs financial capacity page or the German Federal Foreign Office page directly, so treat those two rows as secondary and check the official page.

Savings account or fixed deposit: the trade-off

The case for a savings or current account

  • Shows the money's history, including salary or business inflows, which helps answer "where did this come from".
  • Clearly available to you, which matches the control test in UK rules.
  • Simple to evidence: one statement covers balance and history.
  • Risk: if you spend from it during the holding period and the balance dips below the required amount, the evidence fails. The UK student page on GOV.UK requires the money for at least 28 days in a row.

The case for a fixed deposit

  • Removes the temptation to spend during the holding period.
  • Earns interest, which matters if you must hold a large sum for months.
  • A bank certificate or letter shows the amount, start date and maturity in one document.
  • Risk: if the deposit matures, rolls over or is broken during the period, the record can look broken too. And if the officer reads it as money you cannot reach, it may be discounted.

A middle path many applicants use

Keep the required amount in a savings account in your own name for the full period, and put any surplus in a fixed deposit. The savings statement meets the core test; the deposit certificate shows extra resources without carrying the main weight.

Questions to ask your bank before locking money

  • Can I break the deposit early, and what would I lose in interest or charges?
  • Will the certificate show my name exactly as on my passport, the amount, the start date and the maturity date?
  • Will the deposit roll over at maturity without new instructions, and will that show as a withdrawal and a new deposit on my statement?
  • Can you issue a letter addressed to the embassy confirming the deposit and its terms?
  • Is the deposit in naira or a foreign currency, and how will its value be shown?

The answers tell you whether the deposit will read as available money or as funds out of reach. If the bank cannot give a clear letter, keep the core amount in a savings account instead.

Worked example

Example only. Amaka is applying for a UK Student visa for a course outside London. GOV.UK sets living costs at £1,171 a month for up to nine months, so she needs £10,539 for living costs (9 × £1,171), plus any unpaid first-year fees shown on her CAS. Her parents hold the money. Appendix Finance converts foreign funds at the OANDA spot rate for the application date (FIN 1.1), so a naira balance that just meets the figure today may fall short if the naira weakens. Her family keeps a margin above the converted figure in a savings account for the full 28 days, rather than locking the exact amount in a deposit that matures mid-period. Today's rate is on OANDA; we do not quote it here.

What to check first

  1. Read the exact wording of your route on access, control and the holding period.
  2. If you choose a fixed deposit, make sure it does not mature or roll over inside the period, and ask the bank for a letter stating the amount, dates and whether you can withdraw early.
  3. Keep the account in your own name, or a name the rules allow; see joint accounts.
  4. For the UK specifically, read the 28-day rule and our planned guide to fixed deposits for UK student visas.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme's Fixed Box locks naira savings until a date you choose; it is a savings tool, not a visa product, and whether an embassy accepts it is that embassy's decision. Rates are shown in the app. See Savings Boxes.

Questions people ask

Is fixed deposit accepted for UK student visa?

UK Appendix Finance does not ban it; it requires the account holder to have control of the funds (FIN 5.2) and evidence covering the whole holding period. Check the route guidance and get a bank letter showing the amount and dates.

Can I use a fixed deposit for Canada Express Entry?

IRCC says funds must be available when you apply and when your permanent resident visa is issued, and the bank letter must list each account with balances. A deposit you cannot reach at those points is a risk.

Which is better for visa, savings or fixed deposit?

For most routes a savings account in your name is safer because it shows history and availability. A fixed deposit works best for surplus funds or where the route names it, such as a GIC for Canadian study.

Does breaking a fixed deposit affect my visa application?

It can if it happens inside the holding period and the balance drops, or if the record looks interrupted. Plan maturity dates around the application.
