Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Fiscal Responsibility Act: the 3% deficit rule

Nigeria's Fiscal Responsibility Act 2007 caps the federal deficit, as a share of GDP, at 3%. What it means and where the 2026 budget stands.

The short answer

The Fiscal Responsibility Act 2007 limits the federal government's budget deficit to 3% of GDP. The Act allows the ceiling to be exceeded only in exceptional circumstances that it sets out, and every deficit figure in circulation for the 2026 budget is above 3%, ranging from 4.28% for the original proposal to 6.41% for the signed Act on BudgIT's estimate.

What the rule says

The Fiscal Responsibility Act was passed in 2007 to bring discipline to federal spending and borrowing. Its best-known rule is the deficit ceiling: the federal deficit should not exceed 3% of the country's gross domestic product (GDP). The Act also requires budgets to be built on a medium-term framework, the MTEF, and created the Fiscal Responsibility Commission to monitor compliance.

The Act provides that the ceiling can be exceeded in exceptional circumstances. We could not open the official text of the Act for this article, so we do not list those circumstances here; read the Act itself before relying on any summary of the exceptions.

How the 3% is measured

The ratio is the deficit in naira divided by nominal GDP for the year, expressed as a percentage.

Example only: if GDP were ₦400 trillion, 3% would allow a deficit of ₦12 trillion (₦400tn × 0.03). A deficit of ₦24 trillion on the same GDP would be 6%, twice the ceiling.

Two choices change the answer. First, which deficit: the presented bill, the signed Act or the actual outturn. Second, which GDP: estimates are revised, and a larger GDP figure makes the same deficit look smaller as a percentage.

Where the 2026 budget stands

MTEF approved Dec 2025₦20.13 trillionnot statedThisDay, Dec 2025

The Nairametrics analysis notes that every figure in circulation breaches the 3% ceiling and argues that the Fiscal Responsibility Commission should publish a compliance opinion within 30 days of assent; it did not say whether one had been issued. Fitch, which measures the wider general government deficit, expects 3.6% of GDP in 2026 and 3.1% in 2025, both also above 3%.

How often it is breached

We could not assemble a sourced year-by-year record of federal deficits against GDP for this article, so we cannot state how many years the ceiling has been broken. The 2026 figures above show it is being exceeded on every published measure this year. The Debt Management Office and the Budget Office publish the data you would need to build the record yourself.

What to check when you see a breach reported

  1. Which version of the budget the figure comes from: proposal, signed Act or actual outturn.
  2. Whether the deficit is federal only or general government.
  3. Which GDP estimate was used as the denominator, and whether it has since been revised.
  4. Whether the report cites the Act's exception provisions, and if so, what reason was given.

Why it matters

  • A deficit above the ceiling means more borrowing, which raises future debt service.
  • Rating agencies and lenders watch whether fiscal rules are respected; repeated breaches weaken the rule's credibility.
  • For savers, heavy government borrowing tends to keep Treasury bill yields high; see how to buy Treasury bills.

This article is information, not legal advice. For how the gap is financed, read budget deficit explained.

Questions people ask

What is the 3% rule in the Fiscal Responsibility Act?

The Fiscal Responsibility Act 2007 caps the federal budget deficit at 3% of GDP, with exceptions only in circumstances the Act sets out.

Does the 2026 budget breach the Fiscal Responsibility Act?

On every published estimate, yes: deficit figures range from 4.28% of GDP for the original proposal to 6.41% for the signed Act on BudgIT's estimate.

Who enforces the Fiscal Responsibility Act?

The Act created the Fiscal Responsibility Commission to monitor compliance. Analysts have called on it to publish compliance opinions on each budget.

What happens if Nigeria breaks the 3% deficit limit?

The immediate effect is more borrowing and higher future debt service. We could not confirm any penalty that has been applied for a breach.
