Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Fake shortlet listings: paying for a flat that isn't there

A shortlet found on Instagram or WhatsApp can be a stolen photo set with no flat behind it. How the trick works and the checks to make before you pay.

The short answer

Most fake shortlet listings use photos copied from a real apartment, a price a little below the area's going rate and a request to pay the full stay by bank transfer before you see anything. Before paying, ask for a live video walk-through on your terms, confirm the address and the person's right to let it, and prefer a booking platform whose payment system holds your money; Airbnb, for example, warns that a request to pay by wire or bank transfer outside its platform may be fraudulent.

How the fake shortlet works

The pattern is the same whether the page is on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok or a WhatsApp status. Someone builds a page around photographs of a well-finished apartment, often lifted from a real listing on a booking site or from an interior designer's portfolio. The captions name a popular area, list the features people search for (constant power, pool, Wi-Fi, security) and quote a nightly price that is attractive but not absurd. When you message, replies are quick and friendly, and the "manager" asks for the full amount, sometimes plus a caution deposit, by transfer to secure the dates.

After payment one of three things happens. The number stops answering. Or you are told a "caution fee" or "access fee" must be paid before the code or key is released. Or you arrive at the address and find a different building, a private home, or a real shortlet whose owner has never heard of the booking. By then the money has usually been moved on from the receiving account.

Why it works on careful people

  • Bookings are often urgent: a weekend trip, a wedding, a visa interview, a hospital visit. Urgency cuts the time you spend checking.
  • Pages buy or copy followers and post fake reviews and "guest" videos, so the page looks established.
  • Transfer is normal for real shortlets in Nigeria, so a request to pay by transfer does not feel unusual on its own.
  • The photos are real. They simply belong to somebody else.

The checks that catch most fakes

None of these is proof on its own, but a real host can pass all of them without difficulty, and a scammer usually cannot.

  1. Ask for a live video walk-through, on your terms. Not a pre-recorded clip. Ask them to start outside, show the building entrance and the street, then walk in and show something you choose: open the fridge, switch on the inverter display, show today's newspaper or write your name on a sheet of paper. Someone holding stolen photos cannot do this.
  2. Search the photos. Run two or three of the listing photos through a reverse image search. If the same pictures appear on a booking site under another name, another city or another price, walk away.
  3. Get the full address before paying and check it on a map. Look at the street view or satellite image if available and compare the building with the photos.
  4. Check the name on the account. When you enter the account number in your banking app, the bank shows the account name. If it is a personal name that matches nobody on the page, ask why. If it matches, keep a record; it helps any later complaint.
  5. Pay in stages where you can. A real host may accept part payment to hold dates and the balance at check-in. Refusal is not proof of fraud, but insistence on the full sum plus a deposit days in advance is a warning.
  6. Ask someone local to look. If you have a friend in the city, ask them to walk past the building. It costs an hour and can save the whole booking.

Booking platforms and why paying through them matters

Large booking platforms hold the payment inside their own system and offer a dispute route if the property is not as listed. That protection only applies if you pay through the platform. Airbnb's help centre says a request to pay outside the platform without prior notice "may be fraudulent", lists wire or bank transfer requests and PDF or paper invoices among the warning signs, and asks users to report such requests immediately using the report option in the message thread. A common trick is a host who finds you on a platform and then moves the chat to WhatsApp to offer a "discount" for paying directly. Once you pay off-platform, you have left the safeguards behind.

If you have already paid

Act within the first hour if you can. Call your bank's fraud line, give the receiving account number, amount and time, and ask them to contact the receiving bank; our guide on what to do after bank fraud sets out the steps in order. Screenshot the page, the chat, the account details and the receipt before the page is deleted. Then report to the police: the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre runs an online e-reporting portal at nccc.npf.gov.ng, which replaced the older incb.npf.gov.ng address in May 2024. Report the page to the social platform too, so it is harder for the same people to reach the next guest. Be wary of anyone who then offers to "recover" the money for a fee; that is a second scam, covered in scam recovery agents.

What the law says

Sending a misleading electronic message with intent to defraud is an offence under section 12(2) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act 2015, with a minimum penalty of five years' imprisonment or a ₦10,000,000 fine, and impersonation is covered separately in section 13. Obtaining money by false pretence is an offence under section 1 of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act 2006. This is information about the law, not legal advice.

Where Pryme fits

Hotels and shortlets are one of the sectors in Spaces, Pryme's ecosystem of merchants in Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt. Businesses join Spaces with a Pryme Business Account. If you choose to book a Spaces shortlet using Loans on Spaces, the money can only be spent with that Spaces merchant, and the full agreement is shown for you to accept before anything is drawn. It does not replace your own checks on a property, which apply wherever you book. Our guide to shortlet caution deposits explains how honest hosts handle deposits.

Questions people ask

How do I know a shortlet on Instagram is real?

Ask for a live video walk-through that starts outside the building and includes something you choose, reverse-search the photos, get the full address and check the account name before paying. A real host can do all of this.

Can my bank get my money back from a fake shortlet agent?

Sometimes, if you report fast and the money is still in the receiving account. Call your bank's fraud line immediately with the account details, amount and time, and report to the police as well.

Is it safer to book shortlets on Airbnb?

Platform protections only apply when you pay through the platform. Airbnb itself warns that requests to pay by bank transfer outside it may be fraudulent.

Why does the agent want a caution fee before check-in?

Honest hosts do take caution deposits, but a new "fee" demanded after full payment and before you get the key is a common sign of a fake listing. Do not send more money.
