Ten years, one trunk

The business has changed shape four times and never changed what it was rooted in. Each version was built out of what the last one could not do.

2016E-commerce

An online grocery store, built out of a faulty tab. Selling the food was the easy part — taking the money for it, and moving it, turned out to be the business.

2018OjirehPrime Card

A prepaid card. The first time the company issued rather than resold, and the first time it carried the obligations that come with holding somebody else’s money.

2020Microfinance bank

PrymeSolid Allianze acquired — an existing bank with an existing licence. The perimeter stopped being someone else’s to draw.

2023Multicurrency

More than one currency on one balance, and the rebrand to Pryme. A Nigerian business could hold dollars without holding a second institution.

2026Agentic operations

Accounts that do the work rather than only hold value. Five agents on the account, inside a policy you write — which is where the new mark starts.

Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Fake insurance agents collecting premiums: how to check

Paid a motor premium to an agent? How to confirm on askNIID and with NAICOM that the policy exists, and how fake third-party papers are sold.

The short answer

Check the policy on askNIID, the industry database of compulsory insurance, by web, app or USSD *565*11#: a genuine motor policy should show against your vehicle. Then confirm the insurer is licensed by NAICOM, which is the only body that licenses insurers in Nigeria. A paper certificate alone proves nothing.

Motor third-party insurance is compulsory, cheap and often bought in a hurry, which makes it the easiest policy to fake. An agent at a roadside table, a mechanic's shop or on WhatsApp sells you a certificate. It looks right and it gets you past a checkpoint. Then you have an accident and the insurer has never heard of you. This guide shows how to check the policy, the insurer and the agent.

Check 1: is the policy on askNIID?

askNIID is the verification platform of the Nigerian Insurance Industry Database, set up and owned by the Nigerian Insurers Association. It is a central database of compulsory insurances. You can check:

  • on the askNIID website, using 'Check Policy' and choosing Vehicle;
  • through the askNIID mobile app; or
  • by USSD on *565*11#.

Vehicle, marine, builders' liability, occupiers' liability and marine hull policies can be checked. For a motor policy, a genuine one should come back with the insurer and validity dates. If nothing shows, or the details do not match your certificate, treat the policy as unconfirmed and contact the insurer named on it directly, using contacts from its own website.

Check 2: is the insurer licensed by NAICOM?

Only the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) licenses insurers in Nigeria. In February 2025 NAICOM warned that an operator calling itself NCIS was not licensed and that its third-party motor policies were illegal, and pointed the public to the list of licensed third-party motor underwriters on its website (Guardian, 25 February 2025).

The list has changed recently. NAICOM's recapitalisation exercise closed with a public notice on 31 July 2026: 43 insurers and reinsurers had met the new minimum capital and were issued licences, and eight more were still under review (Proshare, 3 August 2026). Check that the company on your certificate is on NAICOM's current list.

Check 3: is the agent real?

A genuine agent works for or with a licensed insurer, and the insurer can confirm it. Ask the agent for the insurer's name, then call or email the insurer using details from its own site and ask whether the agent is authorised and whether your policy number exists. Pay the insurer's corporate account, or through the insurer's or an official portal, not a personal account.

How fake third-party papers are sold

  • The cheap certificate. A price well below the official premium. NAICOM's circular of December 2022, effective 1 January 2023, set the third-party premium for a private car at ₦15,000 with third-party property damage cover of ₦3 million (TheCable, 24 December 2022). We could not confirm a later revision as at October 2026; check the current premium with a licensed insurer.
  • Unlicensed 'insurers' with official-sounding names, like the NCIS case.
  • Real insurer, fake paper. A forged certificate carrying a licensed company's name, sold by someone with no link to it. askNIID catches this.
  • The pocketed premium. A real agent collects your money but never registers the policy.
  • Roadside and checkpoint sales, where you have no time to check.

Worked example

Example: a driver pays an agent ₦8,000 for a private-car third-party certificate in a market car park. At the 2022 circular rate, the official premium for that cover was ₦15,000, so the price alone is a warning. A check on *565*11# shows no policy. The ₦8,000 is likely lost, and the driver has no cover. Paying ₦15,000 through the insurer would have bought real cover; in an accident with property damage, the gap between a fake certificate and real cover can run to millions.

Steps: buying motor cover safely

  1. Choose an insurer from NAICOM's current list.
  2. Buy through the insurer's own office, website or app, or an agent the insurer confirms in writing.
  3. Pay into the insurer's corporate account, never a personal one.
  4. Keep the certificate and payment receipt together.
  5. Check the policy on askNIID once it is issued, and again before renewal.

If you use a broker, the same logic applies: confirm the broker with NAICOM and the policy with askNIID. A real broker will not mind you checking.

If you have been sold a fake policy

  1. Stop relying on it and buy a genuine policy from a licensed insurer before driving.
  2. Keep the certificate, receipt, agent's number and the account you paid.
  3. Report the agent to the insurer whose name was used, and to NAICOM.
  4. Report fraud to the police. See how to report fraud to the police and EFCC.

Similar fake-paper scams target pensioners; see fake PenCom and PFA verification. If you are buying a used car, check its insurance too: buying a car on Jiji safely.

Questions people ask

How do I check if my car insurance is genuine in Nigeria?

Use askNIID: the website's Check Policy, the app, or USSD *565*11#. A genuine policy should show the insurer and validity dates.

How much is third-party insurance for a car in Nigeria?

NAICOM's December 2022 circular set ₦15,000 for a private car from 1 January 2023. We could not confirm a later change; ask a licensed insurer for today's premium.

Who licenses insurance companies in Nigeria?

NAICOM. It publishes the list of licensed insurers and third-party motor underwriters on its website.

Is NCIS insurance valid?

NAICOM said in February 2025 that NCIS was not licensed and its third-party motor policies were illegal.
