Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Banking how-tos

Receiving money from abroad into Ecobank with Rapidtransfer

How Ecobank Rapidtransfer pays out across its African network, what the receiver needs, the limits and fees Ecobank states, and what it does not cover.

The short answer

Rapidtransfer is Ecobank's money transfer service across the African countries where it operates (its pages say 33), paying into an Ecobank account, a wallet where available, or cash at a branch, agent or Xpress Point. Ecobank says the receiver pays no fee because the sender bears the cost, transfers must not exceed US$10,000, and money is paid in the receiving country's local currency.

How Rapidtransfer works

Rapidtransfer moves money inside Ecobank's own network rather than through correspondent banks. Ecobank contrasts this with ordinary transfers abroad, which pass through correspondents that each deduct charges and usually take two to three working days. Rapidtransfer, it says, delivers in minutes, and the receiver can cash the money the same day.

There are three ways to send: at an Ecobank branch or Rapidtransfer agent, online, or through the Rapidtransfer app, which is funded with a Visa or Mastercard card. A separate service, Rapidtransfer International, is aimed at senders in Europe.

Where money can come from

Ecobank describes Rapidtransfer as available in all African countries where Ecobank operates, and its app FAQ refers to thirty-three African markets. It is a pan-African service: for money from the UK, US or Canada, Ecobank points to Rapidtransfer International (from Europe) and to its remittance partners, which its site lists as Western Union, MoneyGram, Ria and MTN, among others.

How to receive

Into your Ecobank account

The sender enters your account details on the Rapidtransfer send form or app. Ecobank says the app can pay to Ecobank current, savings and Xpress Accounts, and to other banks within its markets. The page also says, under "Receive money", that receiving into an Ecobank account or wallet "anytime" is coming soon, so ask the sender to check the delivery options shown in the app when they send.

As cash

  1. Take a valid ID to an Ecobank branch, a Rapidtransfer agent or an Xpress Point.
  2. Complete the Rapidtransfer "Receive" form.
  3. Give the teller the transaction reference number the sender shared with you.
  4. The teller verifies your documents and pays out.

Ecobank accepts an international passport, driver's licence, national ID card, voter's card or the ID card of a recognised corporate body, and reserves the right to accept or reject other forms. A transfer cannot be collected by a relative on your behalf.

Limits, fees and timing as Ecobank states them

PointWhat Ecobank says
MaximumLimits vary by country, but transactions must not exceed US$10,000
Fee to receiveNone; the sender bears the cost
Sender fee (app)Shown in the app before the sender authorises
Rapidtransfer International (from Europe)First transfer free with promo code FREE, then fees limited to 1.5% of the amount
Delivery options (app)Instant, 1 day, 2 days or 3 days
Currency paid outLocal currency of the destination market

Reversals and problems

Ecobank says the sender can ask the sending branch to reverse a transfer; after due diligence, only the principal is refunded, and part of it may be lost if the exchange rate has moved since the original transfer. Transactions authorised in the app cannot be cancelled or have their delivery time changed. Complaints go to the branch complaints box or the contact centre on 0700 500 0000. Watch for scams that use fake transfer references; see money transfer scams targeting the diaspora.

What the sender should check

Most delays happen on the sending side. Share this list with whoever is sending you money.

  1. Your full name exactly as on your ID, if you will collect cash.
  2. Your Ecobank account number and account name, if the money is going to your account.
  3. The delivery mode (account, wallet or cash) and the delivery time selected: instant, one, two or three days.
  4. The fee and any tax shown in the app before authorising; Ecobank says both are displayed first.
  5. The transaction reference number, which they must send you, since you need it to collect.

For app senders, Ecobank adds a few rules: the app is funded by a Visa or Mastercard debit, credit or prepaid card; up to three cards can be linked to a profile; one card can only be linked to one profile; and an expired or blocked card, or an expired photo ID, cannot be used to register. A sender using an Ecobank debit card must register with the phone number on which Ecobank sends their alerts.

If a payment does not arrive when the sender expected, ask them for the reference and the delivery time they chose, then contact Ecobank with both. A "2 days" option will not arrive instantly.

Where Pryme fits

For money from outside Africa, a Pryme account gives you local USD, GBP and EUR account details, so the sender pays a local transfer in their own currency and the money stays in that currency until you choose to convert with Swap. Outside Nigeria this runs through regulated partners. See the real cost of sending money to Nigeria and multicurrency accounts.
