Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Life in Port Harcourt

Eating out in Port Harcourt with Loans on Spaces

Using Loans on Spaces at Port Harcourt eateries and restaurants, the Rivers consumption tax on your bill, and how to keep meals out affordable.

The short answer

Loans on Spaces can pay for meals at eateries and restaurants in Port Harcourt that are Spaces merchants, within a limit offered by Solid Allianze MFB that you accept after reading the full cost and repayment date. Expect your restaurant bill in Rivers State to include the state's consumption tax, which a 2016 law set at 4% of the bill before VAT. Treat credit for food out as occasional, not a way to fund daily lunches.

What you are paying for when you eat out in Port Harcourt

A restaurant bill in Port Harcourt is rarely just the price on the menu. Rivers State's Hotel Occupancy and Restaurant Consumption Law of 2016 places a tax of 4% of the total bill, excluding VAT, on goods and services consumed in hotels, restaurants and event centres in the state, according to a May 2025 legal review published on Mondaq. On top of that some places add a service charge, and VAT may appear separately. The way these lines are shown varies, so read the bill before you pay.

The question of whether states or the federal government should collect consumption tax has been argued in court for years, and the outcome affects what appears on your receipt. For a diner, the practical point is simple: budget a little above the menu price.

Using Loans on Spaces at eateries

Spaces includes eateries and restaurants as a supported sector, and Spaces merchants are available in Port Harcourt. The steps are the same as anywhere else:

  1. Open the app and check whether a Loans on Spaces limit has been offered to you.
  2. Read the agreement: the amount, total cost and repayment date appear in full.
  3. Accept only if the repayment date suits your income. Nothing is drawn before you accept.
  4. Pay the restaurant, if it is a Spaces merchant, from your loan.
  5. Repay from your Pryme account on or before the date shown.

The national walk-through is in using Loans on Spaces at restaurants. This article covers the local side.

Three Port Harcourt dining situations

The office lunch in Trans-Amadi

Many people working in the Trans-Amadi industrial area and along Aba Road buy lunch near the office. A plate a day adds up quickly. Borrowing for daily lunch is usually poor value because the cost of credit sits on top of a cost you could plan for. Read lunch money before payday before using credit this way.

The family dinner in GRA

GRA Phase 2 and the streets off Tombia and Aba Road have a wide spread of restaurants. A family dinner once a month is the kind of planned spend where a short loan, repaid on payday, can make sense if you were going anyway.

The group celebration

Birthdays, send-forths and graduation dinners often fall to one person to pay first and collect from others later. If you use a loan, collect contributions before the repayment date, not after.

Worked example: a birthday dinner

These are example figures only.

LineExample amount (₦)
Food and drinks for six72,000
Rivers consumption tax at 4% of the bill2,880
VAT, where charged separatelyShown on the bill
Service charge, if addedShown on the bill
Loan costShown in the app before you accept

If five friends each send ₦12,000 within a week, the host repays most of the loan early and carries only their own share. Check whether early repayment changes the cost in your agreement.

Keeping meals out under control

  • Set a monthly eating-out figure and stop when you reach it, credit or not.
  • Ask for the full bill before ordering a second round so the tax and service lines do not surprise you.
  • Plan the ride home. Rivers police restrict tricycles from 10pm, so a late dinner may mean a taxi or ride-hailing fare rather than a keke.
  • Keep the receipt. If a dispute arises with a merchant, the receipt is your evidence. Consumer complaints can go to the FCCPC.

Before you accept a dining loan

A meal is gone the moment it is eaten, but the repayment stays. That makes food out one of the easiest places to drift into habitual borrowing. Ask three questions before accepting an offer for a meal.

Would I have gone anyway?
If the dinner was planned and the money is coming, a short loan is a timing tool. If credit is the reason you are going, skip it.
When does money land?
Match the repayment date to salary, a client payment or contributions from friends. A date that falls before income arrives invites a late payment.
What else is due that week?
In Port Harcourt, the end of the month often brings PHED prepaid top-ups, school levies and transport costs together. A meal loan should not crowd those out.

If any answer is uncomfortable, pay with what you have or choose a cheaper place. The national guide eating out on credit: when it is fine and when to stop covers the habits that cause trouble. A late repayment can bring charges set out in your agreement and can be reported to credit bureaus, which affects future borrowing well beyond one dinner in GRA.

Where Pryme fits

Loans on Spaces sits inside your Pryme Personal Account, lent by Solid Allianze MFB. You can also ask your Personal Assistant, Eva by default, to remind you of the repayment date; it prepares, and nothing moves without your approval. More detail is on Loans on Spaces.

Questions people ask

Why is my restaurant bill in Port Harcourt higher than the menu price?

Rivers State charges a consumption tax on restaurant and hotel bills, set at 4% of the bill excluding VAT under a 2016 law. VAT and a service charge may also be added.

Can I pay a Port Harcourt restaurant with Loans on Spaces?

Yes, if the restaurant is a Spaces merchant and you have accepted a Loans on Spaces offer. The loan cannot be spent outside Spaces.

Is it wise to borrow for lunch every day?

Usually not. The loan cost adds to a regular expense you can plan for. Credit suits occasional, planned meals you can repay on payday.

What if I disagree with a charge on my bill?

Ask the restaurant to explain each line. If it is not resolved, you can complain to the FCCPC with your receipt.
