Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Does Nigeria owe the IMF? The facts

Nigeria borrowed $3.4bn from the IMF in April 2020 and finished repaying it by 30 April 2025. What remains is a small annual SDR charge and yearly reviews.

The short answer

No IMF loan is outstanding. Nigeria received $3.4 billion under the IMF's Rapid Financing Instrument in April 2020 and had fully repaid it as of 30 April 2025, the IMF confirmed. Nigeria still pays roughly $30 million a year in SDR charges, which are not a loan, and the IMF reviews its economy each year under Article IV.

The short answer

Nigeria does not have an IMF loan outstanding. The only recent IMF borrowing was $3.4 billion of emergency financing received in April 2020, at the start of the Covid-19 shock, under the Rapid Financing Instrument (RFI). The IMF confirmed that, as of 30 April 2025, Nigeria had fully repaid it. The IMF does not appear among Nigeria's top ten external creditors in DMO data for 30 June 2026; see who Nigeria owes abroad.

What the 2020 loan was

Instrument
Rapid Financing Instrument, the IMF's fast emergency window for members facing an urgent balance-of-payments need.
Amount
$3.4 billion.
Received
April 2020.
Repaid
In full, as of 30 April 2025, according to the IMF as reported by Africanews.

Why people still say Nigeria owes the IMF

Two things keep the idea alive. The first is SDR charges. Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) are an IMF reserve asset allocated to member countries. When a country's SDR holdings fall below its cumulative allocation, it pays a charge on the difference. Reports in May 2025 put Nigeria's charge at about $30 million a year. That is a running cost of IMF membership and of how Nigeria has used its SDRs, not repayment of a loan.

The second is confusion between the IMF and the World Bank. Nigeria's largest single external creditor is the World Bank's International Development Association (IDA), owed $19.12 billion at 30 June 2026. That is a different institution with a different purpose; see World Bank loans to Nigeria.

What the IMF does in Nigeria now

Without a loan, the IMF's role is surveillance and technical advice. Every member is reviewed under Article IV of the IMF's Articles of Agreement: staff visit, meet officials, and the Executive Board publishes an assessment. The 2025 Article IV release, dated July 2025, said:

  • Real GDP grew 3.4% in 2024, with 3.4% projected for 2025.
  • Average inflation was 31.4% in 2024, projected to fall to 24.0% in 2025.
  • Gross reserves were $40.2 billion at end-2024 on the CBN's definition; on the IMF's definition they were $8 billion lower.
  • Reforms to the FX market and FX interventions had brought stability to the naira.
  • Public gross debt was 52.9% of GDP in 2024.

The release mentions no new lending arrangement. It recommends continued IMF capacity development, which is technical assistance, not money.

A worked example: loan versus charge

Example, using the reported figures: the RFI was $3.4 billion of principal that had to be paid back. The SDR charge of about $30 million a year is less than 1% of that sum annually ($30m ÷ $3.4bn is about 0.9%). Over ten years, at the same level, the charges would total about $300 million, but they never create a debt that has to be repaid in a lump sum.

What to check first

  • The IMF's Nigeria country page and latest Article IV press release for current views.
  • The DMO's external debt report for any IMF line; at 30 June 2026 none was among the top ten creditors.
  • How IMF assessments of the naira relate to the official rate: how the NFEM rate is set.

Questions people ask

Is Nigeria still owing the IMF?

No loan is outstanding. The $3.4 billion 2020 RFI was fully repaid as of 30 April 2025.

How much did Nigeria borrow from the IMF in 2020?

$3.4 billion under the Rapid Financing Instrument, received in April 2020.

What are the SDR charges Nigeria pays the IMF?

About $30 million a year, charged on the gap between Nigeria's SDR holdings and its cumulative SDR allocation.

Is the World Bank the same as the IMF?

No. Nigeria owes the World Bank's IDA $19.12 billion (June 2026); the IMF is a separate institution with no loan outstanding.
