Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Discounts without losing money: setting a discount policy

A worked naira table showing how quickly discounts eat into margin, how to write a discount policy, and what the FCCPA says about 'was' prices.

The short answer

A discount comes straight out of your gross profit, so on a 30% margin a 10% price cut needs 50% more units sold just to earn the same gross profit in naira. A written discount policy sets who may give discounts, how much, and on what conditions, and any advertised price comparison must be true: section 123 of the FCCPA 2018 bars misleading claims about earlier prices.

Discounts feel cheap to give because the customer is in front of you and the sale is close. The cost shows up later, in a month where sales were busy but profit was thin. The fix is to know, before you discount, how many extra sales each discount requires, and to put limits in writing so staff do not improvise.

The maths: what a discount does to your margin

Example only. An item sells for ₦10,000 and costs you ₦7,000, a gross profit of ₦3,000 per unit (30% margin). The table shows the gross profit left after each discount, and how many more units you must sell to earn the same ₦3,000-per-original-unit total.

DiscountSelling priceGross profit per unitExtra units needed to match
0%₦10,000₦3,000—
5%₦9,500₦2,50020% more
10%₦9,000₦2,00050% more
15%₦8,500₦1,500100% more (double)
20%₦8,000₦1,000200% more (triple)

The formula is: units needed ÷ current units = original gross profit per unit ÷ new gross profit per unit. At 10% off, ₦3,000 ÷ ₦2,000 = 1.5, so you need 1.5 times the units. The lower your margin, the faster this gets out of hand: on a provisions line with a 12% margin, a 10% discount leaves almost nothing. If you need a refresher on the two measures, see markup vs margin.

What a written discount policy should cover

  • Purpose. Each discount type has a reason: clearing old stock, rewarding volume, encouraging early payment, or winning a new account.
  • Maximum by role. For example, cashiers up to 5% on stated lines, the manager up to 10%, anything higher approved by the owner.
  • Excluded lines. Low-margin items, items already on promotion, and lines where supply is tight.
  • Conditions. Minimum quantity, payment before delivery, or a time limit.
  • Recording. Every discount logged against the sale with the reason and who approved it.
  • Review. Monthly check of total discounts given against the extra sales they brought.

Better ways to discount

Volume discounts

Give the discount only above a quantity that lowers your own costs, for example a full carton that saves you repacking, or an order large enough to earn you a supplier rebate. See bulk pricing for wholesale and retail.

Early-payment discounts

Example only. Offering 2% off a ₦500,000 invoice paid within 7 days costs ₦10,000. That is worth it if it saves you borrowing or chasing; it is expensive if the customer would have paid in 14 days anyway. Pair it with clear terms on the invoice, as in getting customers to pay on time.

Value-add instead of price cut

Free delivery within a zone, a small free item, or an extended warranty may cost you less than the same value off the price, because the customer values it at retail and you pay cost. Any warranty you offer must be one you can honour.

Checking whether a discount worked

Judge a discount by gross profit in naira, not by sales or footfall. Compare the same period before and during the offer, and include the units sold to customers who would have bought at full price anyway.

Example only. The ₦10,000 item normally sells 200 units a fortnight, earning ₦600,000 gross profit (200 × ₦3,000). During a two-week 10% offer it sells 260 units. Revenue rises from ₦2,000,000 to ₦2,340,000, which looks like success, but gross profit falls to ₦520,000 (260 × ₦2,000), ₦80,000 less than doing nothing. To break even the offer needed 300 units.

  • Track units, revenue and gross profit for the line before, during and after.
  • Watch for a dip after the offer, when customers who stocked up stop buying.
  • Note any knock-on sales of other items, which can justify a small loss on the discounted line.
  • Stop or change any offer that fails the test twice.

The law on advertised discounts

Section 123(1) of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act 2018 prohibits a trader from making representations that are misleading in a material respect, including about price, price comparisons with earlier or competitors' prices, and the price at which goods have usually been sold. It also covers warranties or guarantees with no reasonable prospect of being honoured. Section 123(2) treats signs and in-store displays as made by the business.

  1. Show a 'was' price only if you actually sold at that price for a meaningful period.
  2. State any conditions (minimum spend, lines excluded, end date) on the same sign.
  3. Keep evidence of earlier prices, such as dated price lists or till records.
  4. Do not claim 'lowest price in town' unless you can support it.

This is general information, not legal advice. On the buying side, IAS 2 (paragraph 11) requires trade discounts and rebates you receive from suppliers to be deducted from the cost of stock, which improves your margin on paper only when they are actually earned.

Where Pryme fits

Discounts on invoices are easier to track when billing is in one place. Pryme Business Accounts include invoicing and a Finance agent that prepares reports for a person to approve, so a monthly review of discounts given takes less time to pull together.

Questions people ask

How much discount can a small business afford?

It depends on your margin. On a 30% margin, a 10% discount needs 50% more units to keep the same gross profit. Work out the extra sales needed before you offer it.

Is it illegal to fake a sale price in Nigeria?

Section 123 of the FCCPA 2018 bars misleading representations about price comparisons with earlier prices. A 'was' price should be one you really charged.

What is an early payment discount?

A small reduction, such as 2%, if a customer pays within a set number of days. It costs you that amount in exchange for faster cash.

Should my staff be allowed to give discounts?

Only within written limits. Set a maximum by role, list excluded items, and log every discount with a reason and approver.
