Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Member loan default in a cooperative: recovery steps

Bye-laws, guarantors, set-off against savings and shares, and referral to the Director of Cooperatives: how a cooperative recovers a bad loan.

The short answer

A cooperative recovers a defaulted member loan in this order: reminders and a written repayment plan; calling on the guarantors named in the loan form; setting off the debt against the member's savings, shares and dividends, which the Co-operative Societies Act allows; and referring an unresolved dispute to the state Director of Cooperatives for settlement or arbitration.

Cooperative lending works because members lend each other their own savings. When one member stops repaying, the loss falls on everyone else, so recovery is not optional. But the member is also a colleague, a neighbour or a fellow worshipper, and the society's own rules decide what it may do. This guide follows the Nigerian Co-operative Societies Act and the usual contents of bye-laws.

Start with the bye-laws and the loan file

The Act requires the bye-laws to set out member liability, and where the society lends to members, the bye-laws must also cover the conditions of loans, including interest, maximum amounts and repayment (section 11). They may also allow fines for breaches, recoverable as a civil debt. Before acting, pull together:

  • the signed loan application and agreement, showing amount, interest and repayment schedule;
  • the guarantor forms, signed by each guarantor;
  • the member's ledger card showing every repayment, and their savings and share balances;
  • any minutes approving the loan, and the bye-law sections on default.

Recovery steps in order

  1. Early reminder. Contact the member as soon as a repayment is missed. Many defaults are a temporary problem: a delayed salary, a sick child.
  2. Written notice. If two repayments are missed, send a letter stating the arrears, the total outstanding, and a date to pay or meet.
  3. Repayment plan. Offer a revised schedule, agreed in writing and signed. Record it in the committee minutes.
  4. Call on guarantors. Write to each guarantor stating the default and the amount, as their guarantee form provides.
  5. Set off against savings and shares. Apply the member's deposits, shares and dividends to the debt, within the bye-laws.
  6. Refer to the Director. If the dispute remains, refer it to the Director of Cooperatives under section 49.

The society's charge and right of set-off

Section 16 of the Act gives a registered society a charge on a member's shares, deposits and dividends for any debt owed by a present or past member, and allows it to set off any sum credited or payable to that member against the debt. Section 15 also gives the society a first charge over certain produce, crops and implements for debts linked to them, which matters for agricultural cooperatives. A member's shares are protected from attachment for the member's personal debts to outsiders (section 17), but not from the society's own claim.

A member who leaves does not escape: a past member's liability for the society's debts continues for up to two years after leaving (section 29).

Worked example

Example: a member owes ₦450,000 on a defaulted loan. She has ₦180,000 in savings and ₦50,000 in shares. Two members guaranteed the loan jointly.

Step₦
Outstanding loan450,000
Less set-off: savings−180,000
Less set-off: shares (where bye-laws allow on default)−50,000
Balance after set-off220,000
Called from each of two guarantors, in equal shares110,000 each

Whether guarantors pay in equal shares, or each is liable for the whole, depends on the wording of the guarantee. Read it before writing to them.

Disputes go to the Director of Cooperatives

Section 49 provides that disputes touching the business of a society, between members, past members, officers or the society itself, are referred to the Director for settlement. The Director may decide the dispute or refer it to an arbitrator, and a party may appeal to the Minister or Commissioner within 30 days. In practice, the Director is the state officer responsible for cooperatives in your state ministry. Prepare the loan file, the ledger, the notices sent and minutes as your evidence.

Cooperatives are also listed as credit information providers under the Credit Reporting Act 2017, so a society may supply credit information about members to licensed credit bureaus; check the Act's conditions before you do.

A referral is not the first step. The Director will expect to see that the society followed its own bye-laws, gave the member notice and a chance to pay, and applied set-off correctly before asking for a decision.

Preventing the next default

  • Tie the maximum loan to a multiple of the member's savings, as the bye-laws allow.
  • Require guarantors whose own savings cover their guarantee.
  • Collect repayments by salary deduction or standing transfer where members agree.
  • Review the arrears list at every committee meeting.

Clear records make recovery faster; see keeping savings and loan records in a cooperative and our debt acknowledgement letter template. For how cooperatives compare with informal savings groups, read ajo, esusu and thrift. This is general information, not legal advice; your bye-laws and state regulations may add steps.

Throughout, record every contact with the member and guarantors: date, what was said, what was promised. Treat members in default consistently; a committee that is strict with one member and lenient with another invites disputes and weakens its case before the Director.

Where Pryme fits

Members can generate a verifiable receipt or statement through Pryme's partnership with VerifyDoc.ai, which the society can check is genuine and unaltered when a member disputes a repayment.

Questions people ask

Can a cooperative take my savings to pay my loan?

Yes. The Co-operative Societies Act gives a society a charge over a member's shares, deposits and dividends and lets it set them off against a debt the member owes, within the bye-laws.

What happens to a guarantor when a cooperative member defaults?

The society can call on the guarantor for the amount the guarantee covers, usually after set-off against the borrower's own savings. The guarantee wording decides how much each guarantor owes.

Where do I report a cooperative loan dispute?

Disputes about a society's business are referred to the Director of Cooperatives in the state ministry, who settles them or appoints an arbitrator.

Can I leave a cooperative to avoid paying a loan?

No. A loan stays a debt, and a past member's liability for the society's debts continues for up to two years after leaving.
