Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

How much is a 12.5kg gas refill in Lagos this month?

What NBS data shows for a 12.5kg refill in Lagos, how far prices have moved, why they differ by area, and how to check this month's price.

The short answer

The refill price in Lagos changes from week to week and from plant to plant, so check two or three refill points near you before buying. The most recent NBS price watch we could open, for October 2024, put the average Lagos price for refilling a 12.5kg cylinder at ₦16,841.25, against ₦9,071.05 a year earlier; this is a dated benchmark, not today's price.

A 12.5kg cylinder is the standard size for many Lagos households. Because cooking gas is not price-controlled, the price you pay depends on the refill plant, the week and how you buy. This page explains the official data, where to find the current figure, and how to judge whether a quote is fair.

What the official data says

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) publishes a monthly Liquefied Petroleum Gas (Cooking Gas) Price Watch with state averages for 5kg and 12.5kg refills. NBS says the prices are collected by over 700 staff across all 774 local government areas from more than 10,000 respondents and outlets. The most recent edition we could open was October 2024, released in November 2024.

Month (NBS)Lagos 12.5kg refillNational 12.5kg average
November 2022₦9,962.50₦10,180.88
August 2023₦9,586.11₦9,194.41
October 2023₦9,071.05₦10,545.87
July 2024₦14,408.33₦14,261.57
September 2024₦16,427.78₦16,313.43
October 2024₦16,841.25₦16,734.55

In October 2024, Lagos was 2.52% up on September and about 86% up on a year earlier (NBS gives 85.66%). Rivers recorded the highest state average that month at ₦17,895.00 and Katsina the lowest at ₦14,725.00.

NBS state averages are a household average across a state, so a single plant in Lekki, Ikorodu or Ikeja can sit above or below them on any given day. Use them to spot a quote that is far out of line, then compare plants close to you.

Where to check this month's price

  • NBS: look for the latest 'Liquefied Petroleum Gas (Cooking Gas) Price Watch' on nigerianstat.gov.ng; if a newer edition than October 2024 is published, the Lagos row in its state table is the benchmark.
  • Refill plants near you: most display a per-kg price; ask for the total for 12.5kg.
  • Your estate or street group: neighbours often share recent prices, which tell you the local range quickly.
  • Delivery services: compare the gas price and the delivery fee separately.

Why prices differ across Lagos

  • Plant costs: rent, power and staff vary between, say, a busy roadside plant and a quieter suburb.
  • Supply chain: plants buying from different depots or distributors pay different prices.
  • Delivery and convenience: doorstep refills include transport and handling.
  • Accuracy: a lower price is not cheaper if the scale under-fills. Ask to see the scale reading.

Per-kg check

Using NBS October 2024 Lagos figures: a 12.5kg refill at ₦16,841.25 works out at ₦1,347.30 per kg, while a 5kg refill at ₦7,476.32 works out at ₦1,495.26 per kg. Larger refills usually cost less per kg, so filling a 12.5kg cylinder fully is often better value than topping up small amounts.

How Lagos compares

In October 2024, NBS zone averages for a 12.5kg refill ranged from ₦16,411.19 in the North-Central to ₦17,114.67 in the South-South. Lagos, at ₦16,841.25, sat just above the national average of ₦16,734.55, and a little above Abuja (₦16,423.40) but below Rivers (₦17,895.00). The spread between states was about ₦3,170 between the highest and lowest averages (₦17,895.00 − ₦14,725.00).

Ways to pay less without cutting corners

  • Fill the cylinder fully rather than buying small amounts more often; per-kg prices are usually lower on larger fills.
  • Compare the per-kg rate across plants rather than the round-number quote.
  • Ask whether a doorstep refill fee is included, and compare it with the transport cost of going yourself.
  • Join with neighbours for a bulk run to one plant, if you trust the person collecting.
  • Keep an eye out for short weight: a quick look at the scale protects you more than a small discount.

A worked budget

Example only: if your household finishes a 12.5kg cylinder in about six weeks and you pay ₦18,000 a refill, you will refill about 8.7 times a year (52 ÷ 6), or roughly ₦156,000 a year (8.7 × ₦18,000 = ₦156,600). Setting aside ₦13,000 a month (₦156,000 ÷ 12) means the money is there when the cylinder runs out.

What to check first

  1. Ask two or three plants for the 12.5kg total today.
  2. Compare with the latest NBS Lagos average for context.
  3. Watch the scale, and check the cylinder is not past its expiry.
  4. Pay at the plant with a receipt or bank transfer, so you have a record.

Safety matters as much as price; see gas cylinder expiry dates and safety checks.

Where Pryme fits

A Naira Savings Box can hold your gas money so a refill does not come out of the week's food budget, and a Personal Assistant can remind you when the next refill is due. For the longer trend, see cooking gas price history and what inflation means for your budget.

Questions people ask

How much is 12.5kg gas in Lagos now?

It changes weekly by plant. The latest NBS price watch we could open, October 2024, averaged ₦16,841.25 for Lagos; ask two or three local plants for today's price.

Why is gas cheaper at some plants in Lagos?

Plants pay different supply, rent and power costs, and doorstep refills include delivery. Check the scale too: a low price with short weight is not a saving.

Is it cheaper to buy 12.5kg or 5kg gas?

Usually 12.5kg per kg. NBS October 2024 Lagos averages work out at about ₦1,347 per kg for 12.5kg against ₦1,495 per kg for 5kg.

Where can I see official cooking gas prices in Nigeria?

The NBS publishes a Liquefied Petroleum Gas (Cooking Gas) Price Watch on nigerianstat.gov.ng with state averages for 5kg and 12.5kg refills.
