Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Chief of Staff for a salon: bookings, stock and commissions

A weekly review for a Nigerian salon: bookings and no-shows, product stock, and preparing stylists' commission pay within Labour Act rules.

The short answer

A salon's Chief of Staff routine is a weekly review of three things: bookings and no-shows, product stock used against services done, and each stylist's commission worked out from recorded services before pay day. The owner checks and approves the pay figures; the Labour Act limits what can be deducted from a worker's wages.

What the weekly review covers

Salons lose money in three quiet ways: chairs booked but empty, products used faster than services explain, and commission paid on figures nobody checked. A weekly review on a fixed day, say every Monday morning, catches all three while they are still small.

  • Bookings: how many were made, kept, cancelled and missed, by stylist and by day.
  • Deposits: which bookings had a deposit, and whether no-show deposits were kept in line with your stated policy.
  • Stock: back-bar products used (relaxers, colour, treatments) against the services that should have used them, plus retail product sales.
  • Commission: services and retail sales per stylist, ready for the owner's check.
  • Exceptions: anything unusual, such as a stylist with many cash services but few recorded bookings.

Bookings and no-shows

Look at the no-show rate per day and per stylist. If Saturdays fill but Tuesdays do not, that is a pricing or promotion question, not a staffing one. If one stylist has far more no-shows than others, look at how bookings are confirmed. Reminders the day before and a clear deposit rule usually do more than chasing after the event. Our guide to cutting no-shows with deposits and booking rules sets out options.

Stock against services

Every chemical service uses a roughly predictable amount of product. If the salon did 30 relaxer services in a week and used enough relaxer for 45, the gap needs explaining: waste, unrecorded services, product taken home or a wrong usage estimate. Keep back-bar stock (used in services) separate from retail stock (sold to customers) so one does not hide the other. Reorder when stock falls to a set level rather than when a tub runs out mid-service.

Preparing commission pay

How stylists are paid varies: salary, commission, salary plus commission, or chair rental, which is a different relationship altogether (see salary, commission or chair rental). Whatever the model, the preparation step is the same: total each stylist's recorded services and retail sales for the period, apply the agreed rates, and list any agreed deductions.

Worked example: one stylist's fortnight

Example only, with rates agreed in the stylist's contract.

ItemAmount
Services recorded₦420,000
Commission on services at 30%₦126,000
Retail sales recorded₦60,000
Commission on retail at 10%₦6,000
Total commission₦132,000
Less: salary advance agreed in writing, instalment 1 of 3₦20,000
Net to pay₦112,000

The owner checks the services list against the booking record before approving. If the stylist disputes a figure, the record of each service shows where the number came from.

What the Labour Act says about deductions

The Labour Act limits deductions for workers it covers. Section 4 caps an advance at one month's wages, requires recovery over at least three months and bars interest on advances. Section 5 bars deductions by way of fines; a reasonable deduction for injury or loss caused by a worker's wilful misconduct or neglect needs the prior written consent of an authorised labour officer. So docking a stylist for a dropped bottle of colour is not something to do on your own say-so. Whether a stylist is an employee or an independent chair renter changes which rules apply; take advice if unsure.

The national minimum wage is ₦70,000 a month under the 2024 amendment, but the Act excludes, among others, workers paid by commission or piece rate and establishments with fewer than 25 workers, according to Mondaq's August 2024 summary. Many salons fall within those exclusions; confirm before relying on them.

Signs the numbers need a closer look

  • A stylist whose services rise while recorded bookings fall, which can mean walk-ins paid in cash and not entered.
  • Retail sales commission claimed on products that stock records show were not sold.
  • Back-bar usage rising week after week with no rise in services.
  • Many bookings marked as complimentary or as redone for free.
  • Deposits taken but no-show fees not appearing in takings.

None of these proves anything on its own. They are prompts for a calm conversation with the stylist, with the records in front of you both.

A simple weekly checklist

  1. Pull last week's bookings, no-shows and deposits by stylist.
  2. Compare back-bar product used with chemical services done.
  3. List retail sales by stylist.
  4. Prepare commission figures and deductions agreed in writing.
  5. Owner reviews exceptions and approves pay.
  6. Record decisions taken, for example a changed deposit rule.

Where Pryme fits

On a Pryme Business Account the Chief of Staff can prepare the weekly review and the commission figures, and stylists can be paid through payroll. The owner approves anything above the ceiling they set, and each preparation and approval is recorded. Salons with a Pryme Business Account can also join Spaces as a merchant in the Spas and Salons sector (Spaces). For the bookkeeping side, see salon bookkeeping.

Questions people ask

How do I calculate commission for salon stylists?

Total each stylist's recorded services and retail sales for the period, apply the rates in their agreement, and subtract only deductions agreed in writing. Check the figures against the booking record before paying.

Can I deduct money from a stylist for damaged products?

For workers covered by the Labour Act, section 5 bars fines, and a deduction for loss caused by wilful misconduct or neglect needs prior written consent of an authorised labour officer.

Does the ₦70,000 minimum wage apply to salon workers?

The Act excludes commission or piece-rate workers and establishments with fewer than 25 workers, among others, per Mondaq's 2024 summary. Check your situation before relying on an exclusion.

How do I stop customers missing salon bookings?

Confirm bookings the day before, take a deposit with a clear written policy, and review no-shows by day and stylist each week.
