Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Naira-only remittance payout from May 2026: what changed

From 1 May 2026 money transfer operators pay diaspora remittances in naira only. What the CBN ordered, what recipients get and how the rate is set.

The short answer

From 1 May 2026 the CBN requires International Money Transfer Operators to pay diaspora remittances in Nigeria in naira only, ending dollar cash and dollar account payouts. IMTOs must open naira settlement accounts with authorised dealer banks; recipients get the naira amount shown on the sender's quote, converted at the rate the IMTO sets near the official market.

What the CBN directed

Reports in March 2026 (Prime Business Africa, AllAfrica/Leadership, and a client note by Udo Udoma & Belo-Osagie) set out the directive:

  • All IMTOs, including the largest global operators, must pay remittances to Nigerian recipients in naira.
  • Recipients are paid in naira regardless of the currency the money was sent in.
  • IMTOs must open naira settlement accounts with authorised dealer banks in Nigeria.
  • The change took effect on 1 May 2026.

The stated aims were deeper FX liquidity, better oversight of inflows, less pressure on the naira and channelling remittances through formal routes. The CBN's FX Manual 2026, summarised by Mondaq, says the same for inbound transfers generally: beneficiaries are paid in naira, and cash withdrawals linked to inbound transfers may not exceed the naira equivalent of $200, with larger sums paid into a bank account.

What changed for recipients

Before 1 May 2026From 1 May 2026
Payout currencyDollars in cash or to a domiciliary account was possibleNaira only
Cash pickupPossible in dollarsNaira; cash linked to inbound transfers capped at the naira equivalent of $200 under the 2026 manual
Who convertsOften the recipient, laterThe IMTO, at the point of sending

Which rate applies

At the time of the March 2026 reports the CBN had not published detailed rules on how IMTOs must set the conversion rate. Since a January 2024 circular (TED/FEM/FPC/GEN/001/003), IMTOs have been free to quote rates based on prevailing market conditions rather than within a narrow official band. In practice they price close to the NFEM rate with a margin. The sender sees the rate and the naira amount before paying; that naira figure is what the recipient should get. Our explainer on how IMTOs set their rate goes further.

What it means in practice

  • Recipients who wanted to keep dollars can no longer do so through an IMTO payout.
  • Senders should compare the naira amount across providers, since that is now the only figure that matters to the recipient.
  • Large sums go into a bank account rather than cash.
  • Scam risk rises around any rule change: no legitimate IMTO asks recipients to pay a fee to release a payment. See remittance scams.

If a payout goes wrong

  1. The sender contacts the IMTO first with the transfer reference.
  2. The recipient checks with their bank that the naira credit has not arrived under a different name.
  3. If unresolved, the recipient can complain to the paying bank, then escalate to the CBN's consumer protection channel.

Worked example

Illustrative figures only. A sender abroad sends $300. The app quotes ₦1,485 per dollar (1% below an assumed reference of ₦1,500) and no fee. The recipient receives $300 × ₦1,485 = ₦445,500, paid into their bank account. Before May 2026 they might have chosen $300 in cash; that option no longer exists through IMTOs.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme does not change the IMTO rule. For people paid by employers or clients abroad, a multicurrency account receives dollars, pounds or euros on local details through regulated partners, and Swap converts only when you approve. Our older guide to CBN remittance rules covers the earlier position.

Questions people ask

Can I still collect dollars from Western Union in Nigeria?

No. From 1 May 2026 IMTO payouts in Nigeria are in naira only.

What rate will my remittance be converted at?

The IMTO's quoted rate, which it sets near the official market rate plus its margin. The sender sees it before paying.

Is there a limit on naira cash pickup for remittances?

The 2026 FX Manual caps cash withdrawals linked to inbound transfers at the naira equivalent of $200; larger sums go to a bank account.

Why did CBN stop dollar payouts for remittances?

The CBN cited FX liquidity, oversight of inflows and pressure on the naira, according to March 2026 reports.
