Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Business

When must a casual worker be made permanent in Nigeria?

The Labour Act sets no date for turning a casual into a permanent worker, but it requires written terms within three months. What that means for you.

The short answer

No Nigerian statute we read sets a date by which a casual worker must be made permanent. What the Labour Act does require, in section 7(1), is a written statement of the main terms of employment no later than three months after a worker starts, whatever the worker is called. Keeping someone on rolling "casual" terms for months or years, doing the same work as permanent staff, is a risk the employer carries if the arrangement is ever challenged at the National Industrial Court.

The three-month rule people half-remember

Ask around and you will hear that "after three months a casual becomes permanent". That is not quite what the law says. The rule people are remembering is in section 7(1) of the Labour Act: an employer must give a worker a written statement of the terms of employment not later than three months after the worker starts. The statement must cover the employer and worker's names, the nature of the work, notice, rates of pay and how they are calculated, pay intervals, hours, holidays and sick pay. Section 7(2) requires any later change to be notified in writing within one month.

The Act does not use the word "casual" as a separate legal category, and it does not say a worker is converted into a permanent employee on any date. So the honest answer to the title is: the law does not force a label change, but after three months the employer must have put the relationship in writing, and the writing will describe what the job really is.

Who the Labour Act protects

The Act applies to "workers". Section 91 excludes people exercising administrative, executive, technical or professional functions. Most casual labour in Nigeria (loaders, cleaners, factory hands, shop assistants, site labourers) falls squarely inside the definition.

What changes as service lengthens

Even without a formal conversion, a worker's legal position improves the longer they stay:

Length of continuous serviceWhat the Labour Act provides
Up to 3 monthsNotice of 1 day either way (section 11)
By 3 monthsWritten statement of terms must have been given (section 7)
3 months to under 2 yearsNotice of 1 week (section 11)
After 12 monthsAt least 6 working days' paid holiday (section 18)
2 to under 5 yearsNotice of 2 weeks
5 years or moreNotice of 1 month

Notice of one week or more must be in writing (section 11(3)). Sick pay of up to 12 working days a year applies under section 16 once the conditions are met.

Where genuine casual work fits

Some work really is casual: a loader hired for one day, a temporary packer for a festive peak, an event hand for a weekend. The National Minimum Wage Act exempts part-time, commission and piece-rate workers and seasonal work such as agriculture, along with establishments of fewer than 25 people, according to summaries by Mondaq and CDD Fact Check. Those exemptions are about the minimum wage, not about whether the worker is casual, but they show the law recognises that some work is short or irregular.

The risk arises when "casual" becomes a label on a full-time, open-ended job. A worker who has come in five days a week for two years, under supervision, doing the same tasks as permanent staff, looks like a permanent employee whatever the payroll calls them. Whether a court would treat such a person as permanent, and what it would award, depends on the facts. The National Industrial Court decides these disputes; we did not verify a specific recent ruling for this article, so take legal advice on any real case.

A worked example

Example only. A bottling plant in Ota takes on 30 casual loaders in January, paid weekly in cash. By April, 12 are still there full-time. The plant gives all 12 a written statement of terms before the end of their third month, stating the job, pay of ₦18,000 a week, hours, notice and holidays. Six of them are later offered permanent contracts with pension and HMO cover; the other six remain on fixed-term contracts renewed every six months, each in writing. In the following December, the plant hires 15 extra packers for three weeks only, with a one-page letter stating the end date. Each group's paperwork matches what the job really is.

One more point: calling someone casual does not take them outside the Labour Act's protections on wages either. Section 5 still limits deductions from their pay, and section 15 requires wages to be paid at the end of each agreed period.

Steps for employers

  1. List everyone you call casual and how long each has worked continuously.
  2. Anyone at or near three months needs a written statement of terms now.
  3. For long-serving casuals doing permanent work, decide: offer a permanent contract, a written fixed-term contract, or end the arrangement with proper notice.
  4. Check pension: PenCom says the contributory scheme applies to private organisations with three or more employees; see pension for small employers.
  5. Keep records of hours and pay; minimum wage law requires wage records to be kept for three years.

Related: contract staff vs permanent staff, pension contribution rates and probation rules. This is general information, not legal advice.

Where Pryme fits

Paying casual and permanent staff from one place keeps the record clean. Pryme Business Accounts offer payroll and bulk payouts, so weekly casual pay goes by transfer with a record instead of cash.

Questions people ask

How long can someone be a casual worker in Nigeria?

No statute we read sets a maximum. The Labour Act requires written terms within three months of starting, and long-running casual arrangements for permanent work carry legal risk.

Does a casual worker become permanent after 3 months?

Not automatically. The three-month rule in section 7 of the Labour Act is about giving a written statement of terms, not about changing the worker's status.

Are casual workers entitled to leave in Nigeria?

Workers under the Labour Act are entitled to at least six working days' paid holiday after 12 months of continuous service, whatever they are called.

Can a casual worker sue in Nigeria?

Yes. Employment disputes go to the National Industrial Court, which looks at the facts of the relationship. Take legal advice on a specific case.
