Ten years, one trunk

The business has changed shape four times and never changed what it was rooted in. Each version was built out of what the last one could not do.

2016E-commerce

An online grocery store, built out of a faulty tab. Selling the food was the easy part — taking the money for it, and moving it, turned out to be the business.

2018OjirehPrime Card

A prepaid card. The first time the company issued rather than resold, and the first time it carried the obligations that come with holding somebody else’s money.

2020Microfinance bank

PrymeSolid Allianze acquired — an existing bank with an existing licence. The perimeter stopped being someone else’s to draw.

2023Multicurrency

More than one currency on one balance, and the rebrand to Pryme. A Nigerian business could hold dollars without holding a second institution.

2026Agentic operations

Accounts that do the work rather than only hold value. Five agents on the account, inside a policy you write — which is where the new mark starts.

Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Canadian startup admin: the first 90 days with AI agents

The admin a new Canadian business faces in its first 90 days, from business number and GST/HST to payroll and records, and which parts AI agents can hold.

The short answer

In its first 90 days a Canadian startup usually needs a business number, a decision on GST/HST registration, a payroll account if it will have employees, provincial registrations, and a record-keeping system the CRA would accept. AI agents can hold the checklist, the deadlines and the records from day one. The registrations, signatures and legal choices stay with the founders.

Founders want to build the product and find customers. The admin still arrives in the first weeks, and early mistakes are the expensive kind to unwind. This article sets out the usual federal steps, the provincial ones to check, and where AI agents help a new company stay organised. It is general information, not legal or tax advice.

Days 1 to 30: identity and accounts

  • Choose the structure. Sole proprietorship, partnership or corporation, federal or provincial incorporation. This is a legal and tax decision for the founders and their advisers.
  • Business number. The CRA's business number is the identifier for your dealings with the CRA. Program accounts for GST/HST, payroll and corporate income tax sit under it.
  • Provincial registration. Depending on the province and structure, register the business name and any provincial tax accounts.
  • Bank account and books. Keep business money separate from day one. It makes the CRA's record-keeping requirements far easier to meet.
  • Corporate records. A corporation keeps a minute book and, for federal corporations, a register of individuals with significant control.

Days 31 to 60: tax registrations

A business generally has to register for GST/HST once its taxable sales pass C$30,000 over four consecutive calendar quarters, according to the CRA's guidance on when to register. Below that, registration is voluntary. Many startups register early so they can claim input tax credits on set-up costs, and because some business customers expect it. The trade-off is that you must then charge GST/HST and file returns.

If you will pay employees, you need a payroll program account before the first remittance is due. Employers deduct CPP, EI and income tax and remit them with the employer's share, as the CRA's employers' guide explains.

Days 61 to 90: habits that last

  1. Decide the reporting periods for GST/HST and put every deadline in one calendar.
  2. Set up a monthly close, even a short one: bank reconciliation, receipts, invoices, payroll check.
  3. Write the policies an agent will need: refunds, discounts, payment terms, who approves what.
  4. Set approval limits for payments and refunds.
  5. Agree with your accountant what they will review and when.

What AI agents can hold from day one

TaskAgent's partFounder's part
Set-up checklistHolds it, dates each item, chases missing documentsSigns and registers
DeadlinesKeeps every CRA and provincial date with remindersFiles or authorises the filer
Receipts and invoicesCaptures, codes and matches to bank linesReviews exceptions
GST/HSTTracks the C$30,000 test, prepares working papersDecides on registration, approves return
Customer questionsAnswers from written policy, escalates the restWrites the policy
PaymentsPrepares and releases below the limitApproves above the limit

Records matter more than founders expect. The CRA requires records to be kept in a form it can examine, generally for six years, and its guidance on electronic records covers digital storage. An agent that attaches every receipt to the transaction it supports builds that from the first month.

A worked example

Example: two founders incorporate a software company in Waterloo in March. The agent holds a 22-item set-up list. By April the business number, bank account and minute book are done; the ISC register is still missing and the agent raises it every Monday until it is complete. The founders register for GST/HST voluntarily in April to recover the HST on C$12,000 of equipment and services, and the agent prepares the first quarterly working papers. In June they hire a developer, and the agent asks for the payroll account number before it will prepare the first pay run. None of the registrations were made by the agent.

Common early mistakes

  • Mixing personal and business money. It makes every later step slower, from bookkeeping to the first return.
  • Registering for GST/HST without changing prices. Once registered, you must charge the tax. Decide whether your prices include it.
  • Paying founders informally. Salary, dividends or drawings each have different tax treatment; agree the approach with your accountant before the first payment.
  • Missing the ISC register. Federal corporations must keep it from the start and file the information with Corporations Canada.
  • No written policies. Without refund terms or approval limits, an agent has nothing to work from and will escalate everything.

Each of these is cheap to avoid in month one and slow to fix in year two. An agent that holds the checklist and asks the same question every week until it is answered does a lot of the avoiding.

What not to hand over

Choosing a structure, signing shareholder agreements, deciding who owns intellectual property, and anything involving investors need people and advisers. So does the decision to register for GST/HST voluntarily, because it changes your prices and obligations. For a wider view, read Business Account agents: what each one does.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme Business can be opened from any country and comes with five agents. The Chief of Staff holds the business's promises and sends a morning brief with only the decisions the founders must make; the Compliance agent keeps the obligations register. Accounts hold NGN, USD, GBP and EUR, through regulated partners outside Nigeria, and not Canadian dollars, so most Canadian startups use Pryme alongside a Canadian bank account. See how it works.

Questions people ask

Do I need a business number to start a business in Canada?

You need one for most dealings with the CRA, such as GST/HST, payroll and corporate tax accounts. Incorporated businesses receive one on incorporation.

When must a startup register for GST/HST?

Generally once taxable sales pass C$30,000 over four consecutive calendar quarters. Registering earlier is voluntary and lets you claim input tax credits.

How long must I keep business records?

Generally six years, in a form the CRA can examine, with electronic records allowed if they meet its requirements.

Can an AI agent register my company?

It should not. It can prepare the information and hold the checklist; registrations and signatures belong to the founders.
