Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

AI agents

Canadian business paying contractors in Nigeria: agent set-up

How a Canadian small business can use AI agents to pay and track contractors in Nigeria: records in Canadian dollars, CRA points, privacy and approvals.

The short answer

A Canadian business with contractors in Nigeria can use AI agents to check invoices, prepare payouts, record each payment in Canadian dollars at a consistent exchange rate and keep the documents the CRA and an accountant will ask for. Where services are performed, how contractors are classified and how personal data crosses borders should be settled with advisers first; agents then apply the answers.

A growing pattern for Canadian small businesses

Canada has a large Nigerian diaspora, and many Canadian founders build teams in Lagos, Abuja or Port Harcourt for software, design, bookkeeping support or customer service. The business sells in Canadian or US dollars; the team is paid in naira or dollars. The work is remote; the admin is not.

Founders often start by paying from a personal account or a money transfer app, which works for one contractor and becomes hard to reconcile at five. By then the records needed for the books, and for any CRA question, are scattered across apps, emails and chat threads.

Moving payments onto a business account with an agent preparing them is less about speed than about having one place where every payment, rate and approval can be found.

Three areas create most of the work: recording foreign payments correctly in Canadian-dollar books, knowing which Canadian rules apply to paying non-residents, and handling personal data that crosses borders.

Canadian rules to understand, in general terms

These are summaries of CRA and privacy regulator guidance. They are not tax or legal advice; check your own position with a Canadian accountant.

Regulation 105 withholding
The CRA requires withholding of 15% on fees paid to non-residents for services rendered in Canada. The CRA's IC75-6 explains the rules. Where services are performed entirely outside Canada, the position is different; record where each contractor works and confirm the treatment with your accountant.
Reporting currency
The CRA's Folio S5-F4-C1 explains that amounts are generally reported in Canadian dollars, converted using the Bank of Canada exchange rate or another rate the CRA accepts, applied consistently.
Contractor status
Whether someone is an employee or self-employed affects payroll duties. Nigerian law also applies to people working in Nigeria.
Cross-border data
The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada's guidance says an organisation that transfers personal information to a third party for processing, including abroad, remains accountable for it and should use contracts and other means to protect it, and be open with customers about it.

What the agents do, and what you approve

TaskAgentPerson

PayoutPrepares payments in USD or NGN; holds changed bank detailsOwner releases
Book entryRecords the CAD equivalent at your chosen rate source, with dateAccountant reviews
Work location logRecords where services were performed each monthAccountant uses it
Data accessLimits what contractors see; logs accessOwner sets rules

A worked example

Illustrative example, invented figures. A Calgary marketing agency bills US clients in USD and pays three contractors in Lagos, each invoicing $1,800 a month, paid in naira.

  1. The Finance agent checks the three invoices against contracts and confirms all work was performed in Nigeria.
  2. It calculates the naira needed, shows the USD to NGN rate and fee, and drafts the conversion and payouts for approval.
  3. The owner approves. The agent records each payment in the books in Canadian dollars using the Bank of Canada rate for that day, the source the agency's accountant chose, and keeps the conversion record alongside.
  4. At year-end, the accountant receives a report: total paid per contractor in USD, NGN and CAD, the rate used each time, where the work was done and who approved.

Choosing the rate source once matters more than which source you choose. Switching between a bank's rate one month and the Bank of Canada rate the next makes the books harder to check and invites questions. The agent applies the same source every time and records it beside each entry.

The agent did not decide whether withholding applies. It made sure the facts that decide it were recorded every month.

Risks and practical limits

  • Currency gaps. Paying from USD earnings to naira contractors involves two currencies outside your reporting currency. Keep the conversion records; your accountant will need them for exchange gains and losses.
  • Classification. Long-term, full-time contractors may raise questions in both countries.
  • Bilingual and privacy notices. If your customers are in Quebec or you serve them in French, check that notices about data transfers meet your obligations.
  • Fraud. Changed bank details and duplicate invoices are the commonest losses. Use a call-back rule and a second approver.
  • Single point of knowledge. If only the founder knows how the contractors are paid, a holiday stalls payroll. Write the mandate down so a second person can approve.

Related reading: paying Nigerian contractors from the UK covers many of the same practical steps, and foreign currency accounting explains realised and unrealised gains.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme Business account can be opened from any country and holds USD, NGN, GBP and EUR, each with local account details; outside Nigeria, Pryme's financial activities are carried out through regulated partners. It does not hold Canadian dollars, so plan conversions from C$ accordingly. The Finance agent prepares conversions and bulk payouts within your mandate, and the Compliance agent keeps the obligations register and records refusals. Above the ceiling you set, a person decides.

Questions people ask

Do I withhold tax when paying a Nigerian contractor from Canada?

The CRA's Regulation 105 applies to services rendered in Canada. For work done entirely in Nigeria, confirm the position with a Canadian accountant.

What exchange rate do I use for my Canadian books?

The CRA generally accepts the Bank of Canada rate or another reasonable rate used consistently. See Folio S5-F4-C1.

Is sending customer data to a team in Nigeria allowed under PIPEDA?

Transfers for processing are possible, but you stay accountable and should protect the data by contract and be open about it.

Can the agents pay contractors without me?

They prepare payments. You, or a named approver, release them.
