Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Buying US stocks from Nigeria: how it works and the rules

How Nigerian apps give you access to US shares, who holds them, what conversion and commission cost, and the tax lines to know.

The short answer

Nigerians usually buy US stocks through an SEC-registered Nigerian app or broker that passes orders to a US brokerage, which holds the shares in custody. You pay in dollars, so naira must be converted first; on top come trading commissions (Bamboo listed 1.5% per trade, minimum $1, in September 2026) and a 30% US withholding tax on dividends that the app deducts.

Buying shares in US companies from Nigeria is common, but most people never see the chain of firms behind the button they press. Knowing that chain tells you who holds your shares, what protects them, and where the costs come from. This article sets it out, then covers currency, fees and tax.

How it works: the chain behind the app

  1. You open an account with a Nigerian investment app or broker, completing identity checks.
  2. You fund a dollar balance, either by converting naira inside the app or by sending dollars from a domiciliary account.
  3. You place an order. The app passes it to a US broker-dealer it partners with.
  4. The US broker holds the shares in custody, usually in an account structure the app sets up for its customers.

Bamboo, for example, describes itself as licensed by the SEC Nigeria as a "digital sub-broker" and says brokerage accounts are held at "top-tier local and U.S. brokerages", which it does not name, with each brokerage account protected by SIPC (the US scheme that protects customers if a member broker fails, within its limits). Ask any app you use the same questions: which US broker holds the shares, and in whose name.

Apps Nigerians commonly use

AppWhat its own pages or recent reports say
BambooSEC Nigeria digital sub-broker; US accounts SIPC-protected (help centre, June 2026).
Hisa (formerly Chaka)Nairametrics reported in October 2026 that Hisa replaced the Chaka app; the Hisa website states a flat 1% fee on all trades.
TroveNairametrics reported in January 2026 that Trove acquired UCML Securities, renamed Innova Securities, an SEC-licensed broker-dealer.
RisevestTechCabal reported in February 2026 that its subsidiary RV Fund Management received an SEC fund and portfolio manager licence.

These are descriptions, not recommendations. Fees and arrangements change, so read each app's current terms. Our comparison Bamboo vs Trove vs Hisa goes further.

The rules on the Nigerian side

  • Registration: an app offering investments to Nigerians should be registered with the SEC. Check its company name on the SEC's Find a Registered Operator page and its list of registered fintech operators. See checking a stock app's SEC registration.
  • Identity: expect to provide ID, BVN and a selfie; the app must know who you are.
  • Currency: you buy US shares in dollars. The rate the app uses to convert naira is set by the app and can differ from the official market rate. Look at the rate shown before you confirm and compare it with the official rate published by the CBN on the day; do not rely on a figure from a news story.

What it costs

Costs come in three layers. Figures below are as published by Bamboo for its own service, as at September 2026, to show the kind of charges to expect.

LayerExample from Bamboo's help centre
FundingNaira bank transfer ₦150 for ₦10,000 and above, ₦100 below; naira card 1.4% capped at ₦2,000; USD card 2.9% (June 2026).
ConversionThe app's naira-to-dollar rate; compare it with the official rate.
Trading1.5% commission on each buy or sell, minimum $1 (Sept 2026).
HoldingNo charge to hold stocks or wallet funds (Sept 2026).

Worked example (labelled)

Example only. You buy $200 of a US share and later sell it for $220. At 1.5% with a $1 minimum, the buy costs $3 and the sale $3.30, so you receive $216.70 for $203 paid: a gain of $13.70, or about 6.7%, before any conversion spread. On a $50 order, 1.5% is $0.75, so the $1 minimum applies, which is 2% of the order.

Tax basics

  • US dividend withholding: Bamboo lists a 30% withholding tax on US dividends, deducted before the dividend reaches you.
  • US sale taxes for certain shares: Bamboo also lists a 10% charge on gross sale proceeds and 37% dividend withholding for publicly traded partnerships, a less common type of US listing. Check before buying one.
  • Nigerian tax: the share-disposal exemption described in commentary on the Nigeria Tax Act 2025 refers to shares in Nigerian companies. How gains on foreign shares are taxed for a Nigerian resident is a question for the NRS or a tax adviser; see capital gains tax on shares.
  • This is information, not tax advice.

What to check first

  1. The app's SEC registration and the name of the US custodian.
  2. The exchange rate offered against the official rate on the day.
  3. Commission, minimum charge and withdrawal fees.
  4. How and how fast you can withdraw dollars or naira.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme does not sell US shares. A Pryme account holds USD alongside NGN, and Swap shows the rate first and the fee on its own line before you approve, which gives you a clear figure to compare with an app's conversion. See multicurrency accounts.

Questions people ask

Is it legal to buy US stocks from Nigeria?

Nigerians use SEC-registered apps and brokers to buy US shares. Check the operator on the SEC register before you fund an account.

Which app is best for US stocks in Nigeria?

It depends on fees, the conversion rate, custody and service. Compare each app's current terms; this article does not rank them.

Do I pay tax on US stock dividends in Nigeria?

US dividends usually have 30% withheld before payment, as Bamboo lists. Ask the NRS or an adviser how Nigerian tax applies to you.

What happens to my US stocks if the app shuts down?

That depends on custody. Ask which US broker holds your shares and whether the account is SIPC-protected.
