Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

BTA for business travel: requirements and limits

Business Travel Allowance in Nigeria: who can ask for it, the documents used, the USD 5,000 BDC cap and what the 2026 FX Manual changed.

The short answer

Business Travel Allowance (BTA) is the official foreign currency a Nigerian resident can buy for a business trip abroad. Under the CBN's 2024 Bureau De Change guidelines, a BDC may sell up to USD 5,000 of BTA per person once every three months, against an e-Form A on the CBN's TRMS portal, a passport, a visa and a return ticket. Since 1 June 2026, up to 25% of BTA may be paid in cash and at least 75% must go electronically, usually to a card.

What BTA is, and how it differs from PTA

Nigeria allows residents to buy foreign currency at the official market for certain approved purposes, known as invisible transactions. Two of them cover travel. Personal Travel Allowance (PTA) is for holidays, family visits and other private trips. Business Travel Allowance (BTA) is for trips taken for work: meeting a supplier, attending a trade fair, visiting a client or a parent company. The money is meant for spending on the trip itself, such as hotels, local transport and meals, not for paying invoices or moving capital abroad. Those have their own documented routes through a bank.

Both allowances are governed by the Central Bank of Nigeria. The rules now sit in the CBN Foreign Exchange Manual, 4th edition, which was launched on 16 May 2026 and took effect on 1 June 2026, according to a review by WTS Blackwoodstone. BDC sales are also governed by the CBN's Revised Regulatory and Supervisory Guidelines for BDC Operations, approved on 22 May 2024. For the side-by-side view of both allowances, see PTA and BTA in Nigeria: who qualifies and how much.

The limit: what the official sources say

The figure most often quoted for BTA comes from the BDC guidelines. Section 10(f) allows a licensed BDC to sell PTA of USD 4,000 and BTA of USD 5,000 per individual, once every three months. The same section says up to 25% of PTA or BTA may be paid in cash, with at least 75% loaded to a prepaid card, and that only transactions of USD 500 and below may be settled in cash, with larger ones settled by transfer. Ask the BDC how it applies that rule to paying for, and collecting, your allowance.

At banks, the 2026 FX Manual keeps the PTA ceiling at USD 4,000 per quarter, as reported by both TheCable (3 June 2026) and WTS Blackwoodstone (10 July 2026). We could not find a published secondary summary that states the BTA ceiling at banks under the new manual, and the CBN's own manual was not available to us. Ask your bank to confirm the current BTA amount and frequency before you plan around a number.

BTA ceiling at banksNot stated in the summaries we read; confirm with your bank—

Who can apply

BTA is for a person travelling on business, buying in their own name. The BDC guidelines say resident customers are verified by BVN or TIN and non-residents by passport, and that travellers complete an e-Form A on the TRMS portal and present a passport, a visa and a return ticket. In practice that means:

  • You must have a valid international passport and, where your destination needs one, a visa already issued.
  • You must have a confirmed return ticket for the trip; the allowance is tied to an actual journey.
  • You must be identifiable by BVN (or TIN), and the Form A is filed in your name, not your company's.
  • The quarterly limit is per individual, so a company sending three staff makes three separate applications.

The company documents, and what to confirm with your bank

Neither the BDC guidelines nor the 2026 manual summaries we read set out a fixed list of company papers for BTA. What they do make clear is that banks are now heavily penalised for weak paperwork: WTS reports a base fine of ₦100 million plus ₦10 million per affected transaction for authorised dealers that process FX without adequate documentation. Expect your bank to want proof that the trip is a business trip. FirstBank, for example, publishes its Form A under a "PTA & BTA Form" heading on its downloads page, so the starting point is the same Form A as PTA.

Ask your bank these questions before you go to the branch, and get the answers in writing or by email:

  1. What is your current BTA limit and how often can I buy it?
  2. Which company documents do you need: a letter on letterhead, CAC documents, an invitation from the overseas business, or something else?
  3. Must the naira come from my personal account, or can it come from the company's account?
  4. How will the 75% electronic portion be paid: to a dollar card, a domiciliary account, or another channel?
  5. What is the Form A charge? The CBN Guide to Charges (effective 2020) sets ₦3,000 per form for banks; UBA's September 2026 tariff lists a ₦5,000 CBN Form A fee.

Worked example

Example (illustrative): Ada runs procurement for a Lagos distributor and is going to a trade fair abroad. She applies through a BDC that confirms it sells the full USD 5,000. At least 75% (USD 3,750) must be paid electronically, so it goes to a prepaid dollar card. The most she can take in notes is 25% (USD 1,250). USD 3,750 + USD 1,250 = USD 5,000. She pays the naira by transfer from her own account, because the BDC rules route larger transactions through transfers, not cash. She cannot buy BTA again from any BDC for three months.

What to check first

  • Your visa is granted and your return ticket is booked before you apply.
  • You have not used BTA in the past three months anywhere; TRMS records the Form A.
  • You know whether your bank or the BDC will pay the card portion, and to which card.
  • Card spending abroad on a naira card is a separate limit set by each bank; it does not replace BTA.

Where Pryme fits

BTA is bought from a bank or licensed BDC, not from Pryme. If you travel for business often, a Pryme Business Account holds NGN, USD, GBP and EUR in one place, with local account details for each, so dollars you earn stay in dollars until you choose to convert with Swap, where the rate is shown first and the fee sits on its own line. See business multicurrency for how the balances work.

Questions people ask

How much BTA can I get in Nigeria in 2026?

Under the CBN's 2024 BDC guidelines, a BDC may sell up to USD 5,000 of BTA per person once every three months. Confirm the bank figure under the 2026 FX Manual with your own bank.

Can my company apply for BTA for me?

The allowance is per individual traveller and the Form A is in the traveller's name. Your bank may ask for a company letter or other proof the trip is business.

Can I collect BTA in cash?

Since 1 June 2026, up to 25% of PTA or BTA may be paid in cash, and at least 75% must be paid electronically. The BDC guidelines separately limit cash settlement to transactions of USD 500 and below, so ask the BDC how it handles your purchase.

Can I get PTA and BTA in the same quarter?

The rules list them as separate allowances with separate purposes. Whether your bank will process both for the same person in one quarter is a bank decision; ask before you apply.
