Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is a bridge bank? Polaris and Keystone explained

How a bridge bank works in Nigeria, how Skye Bank became Polaris in 2018, who has owned it since, and where Keystone stands today.

The short answer

A bridge bank is a new bank set up by the regulators to take over the deposits and good assets of a failing bank so customers keep banking without interruption. Polaris Bank was created this way on 21 September 2018 when the CBN revoked Skye Bank's licence; AMCON injected about ₦786bn and later sold it to SCIL in 2022, a sale since placed under review.

How a bridge bank works

When a bank cannot be rescued by its shareholders, the CBN can revoke its licence. Instead of closing branches and paying depositors through the insurance scheme, the regulators can create a new bank, transfer the failed bank's deposits and selected assets to it, and fund it so it is sound from the first day. The old company is then liquidated. Customers become customers of the new bank without doing anything.

  • The CBN revokes the failing bank's licence.
  • The NDIC organises and incorporates the bridge bank and starts liquidating the old bank.
  • AMCON (or another public body) provides capital.
  • Deposits and selected assets move across; old shareholders stay with the failed company.
  • The authorities look for investors to buy the bridge bank.

The Skye Bank to Polaris case

ThisDay reported on 22 September 2018 that the CBN and NDIC announced at a joint briefing in Lagos that Skye Bank's licence had been revoked, 27 months after the CBN first intervened in July 2016. The CBN cited corporate governance lapses, persistent failure to meet minimum prudential and capital ratios, and continuous reliance on CBN liquidity support. Shareholders could not recapitalise the bank.

Polaris Bank began operating on 21 September 2018, took over Skye Bank's deposits, and AMCON injected about ₦786 billion. Most staff were absorbed under new contracts. Skye Bank's shares were suspended on the stock exchange.

Who owns Polaris now

In October 2022 the CBN and AMCON said Strategic Capital Investment Limited (SCIL) had acquired 100% of Polaris for ₦50bn upfront plus taking on ₦1.305tn of AMCON debt, ₦1.355tn in total (TheCable, 4 Jan 2023). In January 2024 the CBN dissolved the boards and management of Polaris, Union and Keystone. On 2 April 2026 a CBN official said the three banks remained under regulatory and judicial review, were raising the new required capital, and that customers did not need to withdraw or close accounts (AllAfrica). A week later the CBN called a claim that Polaris was being liquidated "fake" (Channels TV, 9 Apr 2026). We could not confirm who owns Polaris as at October 2026.

Where Keystone stands

Keystone Bank is often discussed alongside Polaris because both have been under special arrangements. A Federal Ministry of Information release of 13 February 2025 said a Lagos court had ordered 6.3 billion Keystone shares forfeited to the Federal Government and that the bank described itself as fully government-owned. The CBN said on 14 February 2025 that Keystone was safe, sound and fully operational. Keystone's earlier history as a bridge bank is not covered by the sources we checked, so we do not state it here.

What this means for you

If you bank with Polaris or Keystone, both are operating and the CBN has publicly said customers need not panic. Watch for official notices on the bank's own site and the CBN's, ignore forwarded messages, and keep your balance in view against the NDIC limit. Background: AMCON explained, what happens in a merger, NDIC cover and how to judge a bank's health.

Questions people ask

Is Polaris Bank government owned?

It was created as a bridge bank capitalised by AMCON in 2018 and sold to SCIL in 2022. That sale has since been under review; we could not confirm the current owner as at Oct 2026.

Is Polaris Bank being liquidated?

The CBN called that claim fake on 9 April 2026 and said the banking system was safe.

Is Keystone Bank safe?

The CBN said in February 2025 that Keystone was safe, sound and fully operational, after shares were forfeited to the Federal Government.

What happened to Skye Bank?

Its licence was revoked on 21 September 2018 and its deposits moved to Polaris Bank, a bridge bank.
