Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

How to work out your break-even point

Split your costs into fixed and variable, apply the break-even formula, and see how many sales a Nigerian shop needs each month to cover costs.

The short answer

Your break-even point is the level of sales at which you make neither profit nor loss. Divide your monthly fixed costs by the contribution each sale makes (selling price minus variable cost per sale); the result is the number of sales you need to cover your costs.

The idea in one sentence

Every sale leaves something after paying for the goods sold, and that leftover has to cover the bills you pay whether or not anyone walks in: rent, salaries, the generator. Break-even is the point where the leftovers from all sales exactly cover those bills. Below it you lose money; above it you make a profit.

Step 1: split your costs

Fixed costs (same each month)Variable costs (rise with each sale)
Shop rent, spread monthlyCost of goods you sell
Salaries of permanent staffPackaging, nylon and carrier bags
Base electricity or generator servicingDelivery and dispatch per order
Software subscriptions, insurance, leviesCard, POS or checkout charges per payment
Loan repaymentsSales commission

Some costs are mixed. Diesel, for example, has a baseline you burn whatever happens and an extra amount on long trading days. Put the baseline in fixed and estimate the rest per sale, or keep it all as fixed if your sales do not change your opening hours. Spread annual payments such as rent: ₦3,000,000 a year is ₦250,000 a month.

Step 2: work out contribution

Contribution per sale = average selling price − variable cost per sale. The contribution ratio is contribution divided by price. It tells you how many kobo in every naira of sales are left to cover fixed costs.

Step 3: apply the formula

Break-even sales (units)
Fixed costs ÷ contribution per sale
Break-even revenue (naira)
Fixed costs ÷ contribution ratio
Sales for a target profit
(Fixed costs + target profit) ÷ contribution per sale

Worked example: a neighbourhood provisions shop

Example only. Monthly fixed costs:

  • Rent: ₦250,000
  • Two staff: ₦300,000
  • Generator servicing and baseline power: ₦80,000
  • Other (levies, phone, software): ₦70,000
  • Total fixed costs: ₦700,000

The average basket is ₦5,000. Goods in that basket cost ₦3,500 and bags plus a share of restocking transport cost ₦250, so variable cost is ₦3,750. Contribution is ₦5,000 − ₦3,750 = ₦1,250, a ratio of 25%.

MeasureCalculationResult
Break-even baskets per month₦700,000 ÷ ₦1,250560
Break-even revenue₦700,000 ÷ 0.25₦2,800,000
Per trading day (26 days)560 ÷ 26about 22 baskets
For ₦300,000 profit(₦700,000 + ₦300,000) ÷ ₦1,250800 baskets (₦4,000,000)

What happens when supplier prices rise

Suppose your supplier raises costs and your variable cost per basket becomes ₦4,000 while you hold the price at ₦5,000. Contribution falls to ₦1,000 and break-even rises to ₦700,000 ÷ ₦1,000 = 700 baskets, or ₦3,500,000 in sales. That is 140 more baskets a month just to stand still. This is why holding prices during cost increases can quietly push a shop into loss; see pricing groceries when costs keep rising.

Two adjustments people forget

Take VAT out of the price

If your business is registered for VAT, part of every sale belongs to the tax authority, not to you. Forvis Mazars' March 2026 summary of the Nigeria Tax Act 2025 confirms the rate stays at 7.5%. A shelf price of ₦5,375 including VAT is ₦5,000 before VAT (₦5,375 ÷ 1.075), and it is the ₦5,000 that goes into the break-even sum. The same summary says businesses with turnover up to ₦100 million and fixed assets up to ₦250 million (professional services excluded) are exempt from charging VAT, in which case the whole price is yours. This is information, not tax advice.

Recalculate when costs move

Break-even is not a number you work out once. The National Bureau of Statistics put headline inflation at 14.63% year on year in September 2026, with food inflation at 19.59%, as reported by Voice of Nigeria on 16 October 2026. At those rates both your stock costs and your fixed costs drift upwards through the year. Redo the calculation whenever rent is renewed, salaries change or a major supplier reprices, and at least once a quarter; check the latest NBS release for the current figure.

Using the number

  • Daily target: divide break-even sales by trading days and put the figure where staff can see it.
  • Margin of safety: if you sell 700 baskets and break-even is 560, you can lose 140 baskets (20%) before making a loss.
  • Decisions: before adding a staff member at ₦150,000 a month, check that you can sell the extra ₦150,000 ÷ ₦1,250 = 120 baskets.
  • Pricing: a small price rise raises contribution and lowers break-even; test it against what customers will bear.

Break-even uses averages, so it is a guide rather than a guarantee. It ignores timing too: you can be above break-even and still short of cash if customers pay late. Pair it with a 13-week cash flow forecast, and use cost-plus pricing to set item prices.

Where Pryme fits

Payment charges are a variable cost. Pryme's bank-transfer checkout is free, so it adds nothing to your variable cost per sale. Joining Spaces can bring customers whose spending is financed by Loans on Spaces, if you trade in a supported sector.

Questions people ask

What is the break-even formula?

Break-even units = fixed costs ÷ (selling price − variable cost per unit). Break-even revenue = fixed costs ÷ contribution ratio.

What are fixed costs in a small business?

Costs that stay the same regardless of sales in the month, such as rent, permanent salaries, subscriptions and insurance.

How do I calculate break-even for a shop with many products?

Use the average basket or average sale: its average price and average variable cost. Or work out a contribution ratio from your monthly sales and cost of goods.

Why is my business above break-even but still short of cash?

Break-even measures profit, not cash. Credit sales, stock purchases and loan principal can drain cash even when the business is profitable.
