Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Loans

How long after a default can you borrow again?

There is no fixed waiting period. What decides it is how your record reads, whether it shows settled, and how long the bureaus keep history.

The short answer

There is no published waiting period in Nigeria after which you can borrow again; each lender reads your credit record and applies its own policy. What changes your chances is the status of the defaulted loan (settled is far better than outstanding or written off), how recent it was, and what you have done since. CRC says its reports show the last six years of history and that the CBN requires data to be kept for up to ten years.

Why there is no single answer

Nigerians often hear that a default "blocks" them for a set number of years. We found no rule that sets such a period for consumers. What exists is a record, held by the credit bureaus and, for bank loans, the CBN's CRMS, and a set of lender policies that read that record. Some lenders will offer credit soon after a default is settled; others will not lend while any default appears.

For banks, the CBN has gone further than individual policy. Its circular list records a June 2014 circular on "Prohibition of Loan Defaulters from Further Access to Credit Facilities in the Nigerian Banking System" and an October 2014 set of guidelines on how banks should process requests to extend new or additional credit to loan defaulters. In short, banks have rules about lending to people who are still in default, which is why clearing the debt comes first.

How long the record lasts

CRC Credit Bureau's FAQ says its reports cover the last six years of history, while the Central Bank requires data to be retained for up to ten years. It also says information cannot be removed unless it is an error. So paying off a defaulted loan does not erase it; it changes its status, and the default gradually counts for less as newer, cleaner history builds up after it.

How lenders read a past default

What your report showsHow a lender usually reads it
Default, still outstandingMost lenders decline; banks face CBN restrictions on lending to defaulters
Default, written off by the lenderStill a debt in most cases; a strong negative
Default, later settled in fullNegative history, but evidence you finished the obligation
Settled default plus a year or more of on-time payments sinceMany lenders will consider you, often starting with a smaller amount
Old settled default, long clean history after itWeighs little against recent good behaviour

Getting the record updated after you settle

  1. Pay in a way you can prove: bank transfer to the lender's official account, never cash to an agent.
  2. Get a clearance or settlement letter stating that the loan is fully paid and the balance is nil. See how to get a loan clearance letter.
  3. Ask the lender to update the bureaus and ask which ones it reports to.
  4. Check your reports after a month or two. CRC offers one free report a year; FirstCentral offers a free score. See getting your CRC report.
  5. Dispute if it still shows outstanding, sending the clearance letter to the bureau and the lender.

A worked example

Ngozi missed four payments on a ₦150,000 loan in early 2025 and the lender reported it as past due. In September 2025 she agreed a settlement and paid ₦160,000 including charges, got a clearance letter, and in November confirmed that both her CRC and FirstCentral reports showed the loan as closed. Her first application in December 2025 was declined. She then kept her only remaining credit, a small overdraft, in order for twelve months. By December 2026 her file shows a settled default followed by a year of on-time payments, which is the pattern lenders are more willing to accept. She applies to one lender rather than five, so her enquiry list stays short.

Starting small again

The first credit after a default is usually modest, and that is not a bad thing. A small facility repaid on time adds fresh, positive lines to your file, which is the only thing that outweighs an old default. Good first steps are a small overdraft or card limit with your main bank, a short-tenor loan you could repay from one month's pay, or credit tied to a purchase you were going to make anyway. Avoid stacking several new facilities at once: each adds an enquiry and a repayment date to manage, and one slip at this stage undoes months of rebuilding.

What helps, and what does not

  • Helps: settling in full, getting the report corrected, a period of on-time payments on any credit you still have, a steady income shown on your statements.
  • Does not help: applying to many lenders at once, borrowing from one app to repay another, paying anyone who promises to "remove" a default.
  • Check identity details: a mixed-up file can look like a default that is not yours. See disputing an error.

Further reading: how long a default stays on your report and how to grow your credit limit.

Where Pryme fits

Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank, the lender, uses the credit bureaus. A Loans on Spaces limit is offered based on how your account is run, and it is never assured; when one is offered, you see the full agreement and choose whether to accept. See Loans on Spaces.

Questions people ask

How many years before I can get a loan after default in Nigeria?

No fixed period is set. Lenders decide by reading your record. Settling the debt, getting the report updated and then a period of on-time payments are what improve your chances.

Does paying off a defaulted loan remove it from my credit report?

No. CRC says accurate information is not removed. Paying changes the status to settled or closed, which lenders read far more favourably.

How long does CRC keep my loan history?

CRC's FAQ says its reports cover the last six years, while the CBN requires data to be retained for up to ten years.

Can a bank lend to me if I am still owing another bank?

CBN circulars from 2014 restrict banks from extending credit to loan defaulters, so clearing the default is usually the first step.
