Ten years, one trunk

The business has changed shape four times and never changed what it was rooted in. Each version was built out of what the last one could not do.

2016E-commerce

2018OjirehPrime Card

2020Microfinance bank

2023Multicurrency

More than one currency on one balance, and the rebrand to Pryme. A Nigerian business could hold dollars without holding a second institution.

2026Agentic operations

Accounts that do the work rather than only hold value. Five agents on the account, inside a policy you write — which is where the new mark starts.

Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Loans

BOI or DBN: which should your business apply to?

BOI lends to businesses directly; DBN funds banks and MFBs that lend to you. How size, sector and collateral decide which route fits.

The short answer

Apply to the Bank of Industry if you are a CAC-registered business, usually in manufacturing or processing, ready to deal with a development lender directly, through boi.ng/apply or a branch. You cannot apply to the Development Bank of Nigeria itself: DBN provides wholesale funds to banks and microfinance banks, so a DBN-funded loan is applied for at a participating lender, which sets the rate and decides on collateral.

The basic difference

Both institutions are federal development finance institutions, but they reach businesses in different ways.

Bank of Industry (BOI)Development Bank of Nigeria (DBN)
How it lendsDirectly to the businessWholesale to participating banks and MFBs, which lend to the business

Who sets your rateBOI, in the offer letterThe participating lender
RegistrationCAC registration required (BOI's own pages)Set by the lender; registration is usually expected
Typical fitManufacturing, processing, equipment-heavy projectsSmaller businesses with an existing banking relationship

Our explainers on DBN on-lending and BOI loan products go further into each.

Match your business to a route

Size and stage

A small trading or service business with a few years of steady bank statements is often best served through its own bank or microfinance bank, which already knows its account and can lend DBN funds if it participates. A larger manufacturer buying a production line, or a processor building a plant, is the kind of project BOI's appraisal is built for.

Sector

BOI's mandate centres on industry and enterprise, with programmes for youth and particular sectors. DBN funds reach businesses across sectors through whichever lenders take part, so the sector question there is really about what your own bank is willing to finance.

Collateral and records

With BOI, expect to negotiate security directly: equipment, property, guarantors and an equity contribution. With a DBN-funded bank loan, the participating bank applies its own collateral rules, which may be stricter or more flexible depending on your account history. Clean records help with both.

Decision guide

  1. If you are not CAC-registered, register first; neither route is realistic without it. See CAC registration for government loans.
  2. If the loan is mainly for machinery or a factory, start with BOI.
  3. If you need working capital or a modest asset loan and have a bank you have used for a year or more, ask that bank whether it lends DBN funds.
  4. If you are a very small business, a microfinance bank that participates in DBN on-lending may be the closest fit; see which banks and MFBs lend DBN funds.
  5. If you are under 40, ask BOI about its youth programmes too.

Worked example: comparing two offers

Example only, with assumed figures. A packaging firm needs ₦8,000,000 over 36 months.

  • Offer A (assumed BOI-style): 9% a year, reducing balance, six-month moratorium on principal, 1% fee. Fee: ₦80,000.
  • Offer B (assumed bank lending DBN funds): 22% a year, reducing balance, no moratorium, 1% fee. Fee: ₦80,000.

On 36 equal monthly instalments with no moratorium, Offer A costs about ₦254,400 a month and about ₦1,158,000 in interest; Offer B about ₦305,500 a month and about ₦3,000,000 in interest. The cheaper rate is not the only factor: if Offer B arrives in weeks and Offer A in months, a business with a confirmed order may still prefer B. Put both side by side in writing before deciding.

What to check first

  • Ask the bank directly: "Is this loan funded by DBN, and what are its terms?"
  • Compare the annual rate, all fees and the moratorium, not only the monthly instalment.
  • Check whether disbursement goes to you or to a supplier.

Can you use both?

Yes, in principle, but not for the same purpose at the same time. A manufacturer might take a BOI loan for a production line and use a bank's DBN-funded working-capital facility to buy raw materials. Each lender will ask what other loans you have, and both will look at total repayments against your cash flow. Declaring every facility openly matters: a lender that finds an undisclosed loan on a credit report may withdraw an offer.

Order matters too. The asset loan usually comes first, because it changes what the business can produce and sell. Working capital follows once the new capacity is earning. Trying to raise both at once stretches your records and your security, and can leave you with a factory and no money to run it.

Whichever route you choose, keep business and personal money apart. Both BOI and a participating bank will read your statements line by line, and a mixed account makes your sales harder to see and easier to doubt.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme is not a BOI or DBN lender. A Pryme Business Account helps you build the record either route will examine, and statements can be generated as verifiable documents through VerifyDoc.ai.

Questions people ask

Can I apply directly to DBN for a loan?

No. DBN lends wholesale to participating banks and microfinance banks; you apply to one of those lenders.

Is BOI or DBN better for a small business?

A small business with a bank history often fits a DBN-funded loan through its own bank; equipment-heavy projects often fit BOI. Compare written offers.

Who sets the interest rate on a DBN loan?

The participating bank or MFB sets the rate you pay, within the terms of its DBN funding.

Does BOI require collateral?

BOI asks for security appropriate to the loan, which can include equipment, property, guarantors and an equity contribution. The offer letter sets it out.
