Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Bodija Market Ibadan: what it sells and when to go

Bodija is Ibadan's best-known foodstuff market: grains, tubers, pepper, oil and meat. How to shop it well, buy in bulk and plan a monthly run.

The short answer

Bodija Market in Ibadan North is mainly a foodstuff market: rice, beans, garri, yam, pepper and tomatoes, palm and vegetable oil, onions, and a large meat and livestock section. Prices are usually best early in the morning and for bulk measures such as a paint bucket, a basin or a bag, and they move with harvests and festivals. There is no published price list, so compare two or three sellers before you buy.

For many Ibadan households, a monthly or fortnightly trip to Bodija replaces small daily purchases at neighbourhood shops. Buying in larger measures from traders who bring goods in from farms and other states can cut the cost of staples, if you know what to buy there and how to judge a fair price. This guide covers what the market is known for, when to go, how bulk measures work and a worked example of a monthly run.

What Bodija sells

SectionTypical goodsBuying tip
Grains and legumesRice (local and foreign), beans (oloyin, brown, white), maize, milletInspect for stones and weevils; ask to see the bottom of the bag
Tubers and floursYam, garri (white and yellow), elubo (yam flour), cassava flourTap yams for firmness; taste garri for sourness
Pepper and vegetablesTomatoes, tatashe, rodo, onions, leafy vegetablesBuy by basket early; these spoil fastest
OilsPalm oil, groundnut oil, vegetable oil in jerrycansCheck seals and colour; adulteration is a known risk
Meat and livestockBeef, goat, offal, live goats and rams near festivalsAgree price and cut before the butcher starts
ProvisionsNoodles, seasoning, tinned tomatoes, sugar, salt in cartonsCompare carton prices with Dugbe and Agbeni

For provisions and plastics in bigger quantities, our guide to Dugbe, Agbeni and Ogunpa markets explains where traders restock.

When to go

  • Early morning. Fresh produce arrives overnight and sellers are keen to make early sales. Selection is best before mid-morning.
  • Weekdays over Saturdays. Saturdays are crowded with households doing their monthly shopping, which makes bargaining harder and parking scarce.
  • Late afternoon for perishables. Some tomato and pepper sellers reduce prices rather than carry stock overnight, but quality is lower.
  • Away from festivals. Prices for rams, rice and oil rise in the weeks before Ileya and Christmas; our guide to Ibadan seasons and prices covers the calendar.

How bulk measures work

Bodija traders sell staples by local measures as well as by bag. A paint bucket or mudu is common for rice, beans and garri; a basin or basket for tomatoes and pepper; a tuber or heap for yams. The size of a mudu or basin is not standardised, so ask to see the measure filled and levelled. A full bag works out cheaper per measure but only if you can store it dry and use it before it spoils.

Worked example: a monthly foodstuff run for a family of four

Example only. Prices change week to week; these figures illustrate how to plan, not what you will pay.

ItemQuantityExample cost
Rice2 paint buckets₦18,000
Beans1 paint bucket₦9,000
Garri2 paint buckets₦8,000
Yam6 tubers₦15,000
Palm oil4 litres₦8,000
Vegetable oil3 litres₦9,000
Pepper, tomatoes, onions1 basket mixed₦12,000
Meat and fishMixed₦20,000
Seasoning and provisionsAssorted₦6,000
Transport and porterRound trip₦5,000
Total₦110,000

If the same items bought in small quantities nearby cost 15% more in this example, the shop total would be about ₦120,750 for the food alone (₦105,000 × 1.15), so the Bodija run saves about ₦10,750 a month after the ₦5,000 transport cost. The saving shrinks if you buy more than you can store.

What to check first

  1. Write a list with quantities before you go, based on what you used last month.
  2. Take enough cash for small sellers and confirm transfer details carefully for larger ones; CBN rules since December 2024 limit PoS cash withdrawals to ₦100,000 per customer a day, so a market PoS may not cover a big cash need.
  3. Agree price and measure before goods are bagged.
  4. Check perishables at the stall, not at home.
  5. Use a porter (alaaru) only after agreeing the fee.

For a fuller household budget, see the cost of living in Ibadan.

Storing what you buy

Bulk buying only saves money if nothing spoils. Keep grains and beans in sealed containers off the floor, and add a few dried pepper or neem leaves if that is your household's habit against weevils. Garri lasts well in a dry, closed bucket. Yams keep longer in a cool, airy place, not in plastic bags. Palm oil keeps for months in a sealed jerrycan away from sunlight. Grind or blend pepper in batches and freeze it in small portions if you have reliable power; otherwise buy pepper weekly.

Where Pryme fits

If you shop monthly, a Personal Assistant on your Pryme account can remind you when the run is due and how much you set aside; it prepares, and nothing moves without your approval. See Personal Assistant.
