Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Betting odds explained: what 1.85 really means

Odds of 1.85 imply a 54% chance and return ₦1,850 on ₦1,000. How to read decimal odds, find the bookmaker's margin and see the expected loss.

The short answer

Decimal odds of 1.85 mean a winning ₦1,000 stake returns ₦1,850 in total, which is ₦850 profit plus your stake. They imply the bookmaker rates the outcome at about 54.1% likely (1 ÷ 1.85); if the true chance is 50%, the fair price would be 2.00, and the gap is the margin that makes you lose about ₦75 per ₦1,000 staked over time.

Reading decimal odds

Nigerian betting apps show decimal odds. The number is the total you get back for every ₦1 staked if the bet wins, including the stake.

Total return
Stake × odds. ₦1,000 × 1.85 = ₦1,850.
Profit if it wins
Return − stake. ₦1,850 − ₦1,000 = ₦850.
Loss if it loses
The whole stake, ₦1,000.

So 1.85 is "odds-on" in old terms: you risk ₦1,000 to make ₦850. Odds of 2.00 would be even money, and anything above 2.00 pays more than you stake.

Other ways odds are written

Some sites and tipsters use fractional odds, written like 17/20 or 5/2. To convert to decimal, divide the first number by the second and add 1.

  • 17/20 → 17 ÷ 20 + 1 = 1.85
  • 5/2 → 5 ÷ 2 + 1 = 3.50
  • 1/1 (evens) → 1 + 1 = 2.00

American odds, such as −118 or +250, convert too: for a minus number, divide 100 by the number (ignoring the sign) and add 1, so −118 gives about 1.85; for a plus number, divide by 100 and add 1, so +250 gives 3.50. Whatever the format, convert to decimal first so you are comparing like with like.

Turning odds into a probability

Divide 1 by the decimal odds to get the implied probability, the chance the price suggests.

OddsImplied probabilityProfit on ₦1,000
1.3076.9%₦300
1.8554.1%₦850
2.0050.0%₦1,000
3.5028.6%₦2,500
6.0016.7%₦5,000

This is the bookmaker's view plus its margin, not the true chance. You only have an edge if you can reliably judge outcomes as more likely than the implied probability, and do so more often than the bookmaker.

Finding the margin

Add the implied probabilities for every possible outcome in a market. A fair book adds up to exactly 100%. Bookmakers price so it adds up to more, and the excess is their margin, often called the overround.

Worked example: a two-way market

Example odds. A match market offers Over 2.5 goals at 1.85 and Under 2.5 at 1.85.

  • Over: 1 ÷ 1.85 = 54.05%
  • Under: 1 ÷ 1.85 = 54.05%
  • Total: 108.1%, so the margin is about 8.1%

If the two outcomes were truly equal, fair odds would be 2.00 each. The bookmaker pays 1.85 instead, keeping the difference whichever side wins.

Worked example: a 1X2 market

Example odds. Home 2.10, Draw 3.30, Away 3.60. Implied: 47.6% + 30.3% + 27.8% = 105.7%. The margin is about 5.7%. Different markets and apps carry different margins, so the same 1.85 can be a better or worse price elsewhere.

What the margin costs you

Expected value is the average result per bet if you placed it many times.

Example. You stake ₦1,000 at 1.85 on an outcome whose true chance is 50%.

  • Half the time you get back ₦1,850; half the time you get back nothing.
  • Average return: 0.5 × ₦1,850 = ₦925.
  • Average result: ₦925 − ₦1,000 = −₦75 per bet, a loss of 7.5% of every stake.

One bet can win. Over a hundred bets of ₦1,000 at those terms, the expected result is a loss of about ₦7,500, before any bonus conditions or withdrawal charges. That is the arithmetic of the margin, not bad luck.

Checking a price before you stake

  1. Write down the odds and convert to implied probability.
  2. Add up the implied probabilities for the whole market to see the margin.
  3. Ask whether you have a reason, beyond a hunch, to think the true chance is higher.
  4. Compare the same market on another licensed app; a lower margin costs you less.
  5. Decide the stake from money you can afford to lose entirely.

Common misunderstandings

  • "Low odds are safe." 1.30 still loses about one time in four if the price is fair, and a loss takes the whole stake.
  • "I'm due a win." Past results do not change the next match's odds.
  • "Bonuses make it free." Bonus money usually comes with rollover conditions; read them before counting it as value.
  • "Combining picks boosts profit." It multiplies the margin too. See why accumulators work against you.

Who regulates betting operators

Betting companies in Nigeria are licensed by state lottery and gaming bodies. SCUML, the EFCC's anti-money-laundering unit, lists casinos, pool betting and lotteries among the designated businesses that must register with it, and asks casinos and lottery operators to show a state lotteries board licence. Our guide to who regulates betting in Nigeria covers this in full.

Where Pryme fits

If you bet, decide a fixed amount first and keep it apart from bills and savings. Pryme's Personal Assistant can set reminders and help you keep to a monthly spending plan, and a Savings Box keeps money you have set aside out of everyday reach. Nothing moves without your approval. Our guide to budgeting for leisure covers setting that amount.

Questions people ask

What does 1.85 odds mean in betting?

It means a winning ₦1,000 stake returns ₦1,850, which is ₦850 profit plus your stake. The implied probability is about 54.1%.

How do I calculate betting odds winnings?

Multiply your stake by the decimal odds for the total return, then subtract the stake for the profit. ₦2,000 at 1.85 returns ₦3,700, a ₦1,700 profit.

What is the bookmaker margin?

Add 1 ÷ odds for every outcome in a market. Anything above 100% is the margin. Two outcomes at 1.85 each add to about 108.1%.

Is 1.85 odds a good bet?

Only if the true chance is above 54.1%. If the outcome is really 50/50, 1.85 loses about ₦75 per ₦1,000 staked on average.
