Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Best areas to open a shop in Makurdi and shop rent costs

High Level, Wurukum, Modern Market, North Bank or the BSU gate: how to judge footfall, rent and flood risk before you sign for a Makurdi shop.

The short answer

The Makurdi areas traders most often mention for footfall are Wurukum, the Modern Market axis, High Level, North Bank and the streets around the Benue State University gate, each with a different kind of customer. No official body publishes shop rents for Makurdi, so treat any figure as a quote to test, check flood exposure in low-lying parts of town, and work out the daily sales a shop needs before you pay a year upfront.

What makes a shop location work in Makurdi

A good shop location is not simply the busiest street. It is the place where the people walking past are the people who buy what you sell, at the hours you are open. In Makurdi that means thinking about three things before you think about rent: who passes (students, civil servants, market traders, travellers), when they pass (morning commute, lunch, evening, weekends) and whether the area stays usable in the rainy season.

Makurdi sits on the River Benue, and the 2026 flood guide for Benue State, which draws on the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency outlook, names Makurdi an urban flood hotspot with high risk, mainly from overbank flooding in the low-lying town centre. A shop that floods in September or October loses stock and trading days at the very time harvest money is moving. That alone can outweigh a cheaper rent.

The areas traders talk about, and who shops there

The descriptions below reflect what is commonly reported by traders and residents, not measured footfall data. No public footfall study for Makurdi exists that we could find, so use them as a starting point and then count customers yourself.

AreaCommonly reported customer baseSuitsWatch for
WurukumMarket buyers, transport users, traders coming in from surrounding townsProvisions, foodstuff, phone accessories, POS and transfersCongestion, very high competition, low-lying streets
Modern Market axisShoppers buying clothing, household goods and bulk provisionsWholesale and retail of fast-moving goodsMarket levies and rules on stall use; check who the landlord really is
High LevelResidents and office workers; commonly described as a busier commercial stretchPharmacy, eatery, salon, mini-martHigher asking rents; parking
North BankResidents across the river and commuters crossing the bridgesNeighbourhood provisions, eateries, building materialsDistance from the town centre; flood corridor along the river
BSU gate and student areasStudents and staff during the academic sessionPrinting and cyber cafe, food, phone repairs, data and airtimeSales fall sharply during holidays and strikes

Two neighbouring streets in the same area can perform very differently. A corner plot facing a keke stop can outsell a shop forty metres down a side road. Our guides to Wurukum and Modern Market and Wadata and North Bank markets go street by street.

Shop rent in Makurdi: what you will be asked to pay

Shop rent in Makurdi is usually quoted per year and often requested a year in advance, sometimes with agency and agreement fees added. There is no official Benue rent schedule to compare against, and asking prices vary with frontage, size, power supply and whether the shop has its own meter. Get at least three quotes on the same street, ask what is included and get the terms in writing.

Questions to ask the landlord or agent before paying:

  • Is the shop on a prepaid meter in its own name, or shared with other tenants? Shared meters cause disputes.
  • Who pays the waste and market levies, and how much were they last year?
  • Did water enter the shop in the last two rainy seasons? Ask neighbouring traders, not only the landlord.
  • Is the person collecting rent the owner, or do they have written authority from the owner?
  • What happens at renewal: is there a cap on increases, and how much notice do you get?

Worked example: the daily sales a shop must make

The figures below are an illustrative example, not a survey of Makurdi rents. Replace them with the quotes you actually receive.

Annual rent (example)
₦600,000, paid upfront
Agency and agreement fees (example, 10% each)
₦60,000 + ₦60,000
Total paid on signing
₦720,000
Monthly running costs (example)
Rent share ₦50,000 + power and fuel ₦30,000 + levies and sundries ₦20,000 = ₦100,000
Gross margin on goods (example)
20%
Monthly sales needed to cover costs
₦100,000 ÷ 0.20 = ₦500,000
Daily sales over 26 trading days
₦500,000 ÷ 26 ≈ ₦19,231

If your realistic estimate of daily sales on that street is below the break-even figure, a cheaper side street or a shared shop may be the better first step. Running a generator adds a large cost: petrol in Benue averaged ₦1,698.57 a litre in May 2026 according to NBS data reported by Legit.ng, one of the highest state averages that month. Check today's pump price before you budget.

What to check first

  1. Stand outside the shop at three different times on two days and count people who stop at nearby shops.
  2. Ask two neighbouring traders how sales hold up in the rainy season and in school holidays.
  3. Look at the floor level against the street and ask whether the drainage was cleared before the last rains.
  4. Confirm the landlord's ownership or authority and get a written tenancy agreement with a receipt for every payment.
  5. Price your levies: see our note on the Makurdi waste levy and BIRS small business levies.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme Business Account lets customers pay you by bank transfer at the counter, and bank-transfer checkout is free. Business accounts come with Finance and Sales agents that prepare reports on takings for you to review. For more ideas on drawing people in, read how to increase footfall to your shop.

Questions people ask

Which part of Makurdi is best for a provisions shop?

Areas with heavy daily traffic such as Wurukum and the Modern Market axis are commonly mentioned, but competition is intense. A residential street with few shops nearby can do better for provisions. Count customers before you commit.

How much is shop rent in Makurdi?

There is no official figure. Rents are usually quoted per year and vary with frontage, size and power supply. Collect at least three quotes on the same street and get every fee in writing.

Is it safe to open a shop near the river in Makurdi?

The 2026 Benue flood guide names Makurdi's low-lying town centre a high-risk urban flood hotspot. Ask neighbours whether water entered in recent years and check the floor height before signing.

Is a shop near BSU a good idea?

It can be for food, printing, phone repairs and data, but sales drop during holidays and any academic disruption. Budget for slow months.
