Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Bank lien on your account: meaning and how to remove it

A lien holds part of your balance so you cannot spend it. The usual reasons in Nigeria, from disputed credits to loans, and the documents that clear one.

The short answer

A lien is a hold the bank places on a specific amount in your account, so that sum cannot be spent while the rest of your balance stays usable. In Nigeria liens usually follow a disputed or reported credit, a loan or guarantee you owe, or a failed transaction being reconciled; you remove one by settling or disproving the reason, with documents, and asking the bank in writing to release it.

What a lien is

A lien is the bank's way of saying "this money is here, but you cannot touch it yet". It is narrower than other restrictions. Under a Post No Debit (PND) you cannot move any money out; under a lien only the marked amount is frozen. In your app it often shows as a difference between your book balance and your available balance, sometimes with the word "lien" or "hold" next to the gap.

If you are trying to tell the terms apart, see hold vs PND vs freeze. The short version:

RestrictionWhat it stopsTypical trigger
LienA set amount onlyDisputed credit, loan security, reconciliation
Post No DebitAll outgoing moneyKYC gaps, fraud complaint, review
Stop order or freeze orderUsually everythingNFIU, SCUML or EFCC action, court order

Why banks place liens

1. A disputed or reported credit

The most common cause for individuals. Someone reports that the money they sent you was fraud, a mistake, or a double payment, and the bank holds that amount while it checks. The CBN Circular on the Establishment of Industry Fraud Desks (11 June 2015) lets banks block or place no-debit restrictions after a fraud complaint, as TEMPLARS' November 2025 review explains. If this is your case, read restricted after receiving a scam victim's money.

2. A loan, overdraft or guarantee

When you borrow, the loan agreement often lets the bank hold or use money in your accounts as security. A cash-backed loan, for example, places a lien on the deposit that secures it until the loan is repaid. Liens also secure bank guarantees and bonds issued for a business. Read your loan offer letter: the clause that allows this is usually called "lien and set-off". Our guide to whether a bank can freeze your account for a loan default covers what follows if you fall behind.

3. A cheque or card transaction being reconciled

Banks may hold an amount linked to an uncleared cheque or a card or transfer that failed part-way. Moniepoint's help centre, for instance, notes liens placed on some accounts after card transfer issues on 4 and 5 October 2026 and after a payment processor downtime on 2 October 2026. These usually clear once reconciliation finishes.

4. Official orders

A court order or a stop order from an agency can also be applied as a lien on the named sum. Olisa Agbakoba Legal's June 2026 review notes that a stop order under section 7(6) of the Money Laundering Act 2022 may not exceed 72 hours without a Federal High Court order.

Documents that clear a lien

What you need depends entirely on the reason. Ask the bank first, in writing, which reason applies and what will release it. Then gather:

ReasonEvidence that usually helps
Disputed credit you were entitled toInvoice, chats, proof of delivery, sales records, a signed statement
Money that was not yoursYour written consent for the bank to reverse it to the sender
Loan or overdraft repaidRepayment receipts and a letter of non-indebtedness from the bank
Failed transactionTransaction reference, date, amount and screenshots
Court or agency orderA copy of the order lifting it, or your lawyer's correspondence

Access Bank's Account Management Request Form is a useful example of the paperwork. It has boxes for a "PND Lift/Account Unblock" (a reason and a valid ID) and for a "Letter of Non-Indebtedness", the document confirming you owe the bank nothing, which is often the key to releasing a loan lien.

Steps to remove it

  1. Check the app or ask for a statement that shows the lien amount and date.
  2. Write to the bank's official complaints email asking the reason and the release conditions.
  3. Send the documents for your reason and ask for a reference number.
  4. Follow up weekly, in writing.
  5. If there is no resolution after two weeks, escalate to the CBN Consumer Protection Department, as its complaints page sets out, with proof you raised it with the bank first.

Worked example

Example only: Musa's balance is ₦180,000. A customer reports a ₦45,000 transfer to him as fraud, and his bank places a lien on ₦45,000. His available balance is ₦135,000 (₦180,000 minus ₦45,000), which he can still spend. When he sends the invoice and delivery photos and the investigation clears him, the bank removes the lien and the full ₦180,000 is available again.

Where Pryme fits

Good records make a lien easier to clear. Pryme customers can generate a regular or verifiable receipt or statement through our partner VerifyDoc.ai, so a bank or buyer can confirm a document is genuine and unaltered. See receipts and statements.

Questions people ask

What does lien mean on my bank account?

A lien is a hold on a specific amount, so you cannot spend that sum while the bank resolves an issue such as a disputed credit, a loan or a failed transaction. The rest of your balance stays available.

How do I remove a lien from my account?

Ask the bank in writing why it was placed, provide the evidence that resolves the reason (such as an invoice, repayment receipts or a transaction reference) and ask for a reference number. Escalate to the CBN after two weeks without a response.

Can a bank place a lien without telling me?

Banks can place liens under fraud complaint rules and loan agreements without a court order, but they should explain the reason when you ask. A long, unexplained lien may be challenged.

What is the difference between a lien and PND?

A lien holds a set amount. A Post No Debit stops all money going out of the account, though money can still come in.
