Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Business

Balance sheet for a small business: a plain explanation

What a balance sheet shows, how assets, liabilities and equity fit together, and a worked example for a Nigerian tailoring business.

The short answer

A balance sheet is a snapshot, on one date, of what a business owns (assets), what it owes (liabilities) and what is left for the owner (equity). The two sides always balance because assets equal liabilities plus equity.

One equation behind it all

Every balance sheet rests on one line: assets = liabilities + equity. Turn it round and equity is simply what would remain for the owner if every asset were turned into cash at its book value and every debt were paid. The balance sheet does not tell you how much you sold this year; that is the job of the profit and loss account. It tells you where the business stands on a single date, usually the last day of your financial year.

Assets: what the business owns or is owed

Assets are split by how quickly they turn into cash.

  • Current assets are expected to become cash within a year: cash in hand, bank and wallet balances, money customers owe you (receivables or debtors), and stock.
  • Non-current assets are used over several years: machines, a generator, shop fittings, vehicles, computers. They appear at cost less the wear recorded so far (depreciation).

Count only what belongs to the business. A car registered to you and used mainly for the family is not a business asset just because you sometimes deliver goods in it.

Liabilities: what the business owes

  • Current liabilities fall due within a year: suppliers you owe, unpaid salaries, tax due, customer deposits for work not yet done, and the next twelve months of any loan.
  • Non-current liabilities are longer debts, such as the part of a loan repayable after a year.

Customer deposits catch many small businesses out. If a bride pays half for an outfit you have not sewn, that money is in your account, but until you deliver it is owed back in work. It is a liability, not income.

Equity: the owner's stake

Equity is made up of the money the owner put in (capital) plus profits kept in the business (retained earnings), minus anything the owner has taken out as drawings. When you take ₦100,000 from the business for school fees, cash falls and equity falls by the same amount; the sheet still balances.

Equity can be negative. If a business has lost money for several years, or the owner has drawn out more than it earned, liabilities can exceed assets. That is a warning sign lenders look for first, and it usually means the business is being kept alive by suppliers' patience or by family loans.

Worked example: a tailoring business in Ibadan

Example only. Balance sheet at 31 December:

Item₦
Cash in hand350,000
Bank balances1,150,000
Owed by customers400,000
Fabric and materials in stock600,000
Sewing machines and equipment (after depreciation)1,800,000
Total assets4,300,000
Owed to fabric suppliers500,000
Customer deposits for unfinished orders300,000
Equipment loan outstanding1,000,000
Total liabilities1,800,000
Capital put in by owner1,500,000
Retained profit1,000,000
Total equity2,500,000
Liabilities + equity4,300,000

Total assets of ₦4,300,000 equal liabilities of ₦1,800,000 plus equity of ₦2,500,000.

Reading it

  • Can it pay its near-term bills? Current assets are ₦350,000 + ₦1,150,000 + ₦400,000 + ₦600,000 = ₦2,500,000. If, say, ₦400,000 of the loan is due within a year, current liabilities are ₦500,000 + ₦300,000 + ₦400,000 = ₦1,200,000. Current assets cover them about twice.
  • How much is borrowed? Liabilities are ₦1,800,000 against equity of ₦2,500,000; the owner has more in the business than lenders and suppliers combined.
  • Is the stock real? ₦600,000 of fabric only counts if it can be used or sold. Old stock should be written down.

Common mistakes

  • Mixing personal and business money, so the cash figure is wrong.
  • Leaving out supplier balances because no invoice has been entered yet.
  • Showing equipment at what you paid years ago without depreciation.
  • Forgetting loans from family members, which are still liabilities.

Why you need one even as a small business

Section 11 of the Nigeria Tax Administration Act 2025 requires every company to file an annual self-assessment return, and allows a small company to submit a statement of accounts attested by the taxpayer instead of audited statements. A balance sheet is part of any such set of accounts. Lenders also ask for one, and section 31 of the same Act requires records to be kept for at least six years. PwC's tax summary notes that larger companies' filings include audited statements under IFRS; the IFRS Foundation publishes a simplified IFRS for SMEs standard, with a new edition effective for periods from 1 January 2027.

Pair the balance sheet with a profit and loss account and a cash flow forecast and you have the three views any lender or partner will want.

Where Pryme fits

Lenders often ask for bank statements to support the cash figure on your balance sheet. Through Pryme's partnership with VerifyDoc.ai, you can generate a verifiable statement that anyone can check is genuine and unaltered. Separate business accounts also keep customer deposits apart from working cash. See also bank-stamped versus verifiable statements.

Questions people ask

What is a balance sheet in simple terms?

A list, on one date, of what the business owns, what it owes and what is left for the owner. Owned equals owed plus the owner's share.

What is the difference between a balance sheet and a profit and loss account?

The profit and loss account covers a period and shows sales, costs and profit. The balance sheet is a snapshot on one day of assets, liabilities and equity.

Does a small business in Nigeria need a balance sheet?

Every company must file an annual return under the Nigeria Tax Administration Act 2025, and small companies may file attested accounts, which include a balance sheet. Lenders also usually ask for one.

Why does my balance sheet not balance?

Usually an entry recorded on one side only: drawings not recorded, a loan received but not entered as a liability, or stock counted wrongly.
