Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

AI agents

AI agents vs RPA: what is the difference for a business?

RPA follows a fixed script; an AI agent chooses its steps. How they differ on cost, risk and upkeep, and which kind of work suits each one.

The short answer

Robotic process automation (RPA) repeats a fixed sequence of clicks and keystrokes exactly as recorded, while an AI agent is given a goal and decides its own steps, reading unstructured information along the way. RPA is predictable but breaks when screens or inputs change; an agent copes with variation but needs a mandate, limits and checks because its choices can differ from run to run.

Many businesses already run some automation: a script that copies invoice totals from email into a spreadsheet, or a bot that logs into a supplier portal every morning. That is the territory of robotic process automation, usually shortened to RPA. AI agents are often sold as the next step. They are related, but they solve different problems and fail in different ways, so it helps to understand both before choosing.

What RPA actually does

RPA software imitates a person using a computer. Someone records or builds a sequence such as open this screen, copy this field, paste it there, press save, and the bot repeats it. It does not understand the content it moves. It follows coordinates, field names and rules that a person set in advance.

That gives RPA two strong points. It is predictable: the same input produces the same output every time. And it is auditable by design: you can read the script and know exactly what it will do. Its weak point is brittleness. If a supplier redesigns its portal, renames a column or sends a PDF in a new layout, the bot stops or, worse, copies the wrong field without noticing.

What an AI agent does differently

An AI agent is built around a language model that can read and reason over messy information. You give it a goal, such as reconcile yesterday's payments against open invoices, and access to tools. It then decides which records to fetch, how to match them and what to do with the leftovers. Anthropic's engineering guidance draws the same line: workflows follow predefined code paths, while agents direct their own process and tool use.

That flexibility is the point. An agent can read an invoice it has never seen before, notice that a customer paid two invoices in one transfer, or draft a reply to a query written in plain language. The cost is that its path is not fixed in advance, so you control it with boundaries rather than with a script.

RPAAI agent
InstructionsA recorded or coded sequence of stepsA goal, a mandate and a set of tools
Inputs it handles wellStructured, consistent screens and filesVaried documents, emails and messages

PredictabilitySame steps every runSteps can differ between runs
Main controlThe script itselfCeilings, approvals, permissions and logs
Typical failureStops or copies the wrong field silentlyMakes a plausible but wrong judgement

Which work suits which tool

Neither is better in general. The question is how much judgement a task needs and how stable its inputs are.

Good fits for RPA or simple automation

  • Moving data between two systems whose screens rarely change.
  • High-volume, identical steps, such as downloading the same report every day.
  • Tasks where any variation should stop the process rather than be interpreted.

Good fits for an AI agent

  • Work that starts from unstructured input: emails, PDFs, chat messages.
  • Matching that needs judgement, such as part payments, short payments or unclear references in bank reconciliation.
  • Tasks that cross several systems and need a short explanation of what was done.
  • Follow-ups and drafts where wording must fit the situation.

Many businesses end up with both. A fixed automation can pull the bank file each morning; an agent then reads it, matches what it can and raises the exceptions to a person.

Risk and control: the part buyers skip

With RPA, the main risk is a silent break. With an agent, the main risk is what OWASP calls excessive agency: an agent given more permissions, functions or autonomy than the task needs, so that a wrong judgement turns into a wrong action. The controls are different as a result.

  1. Give the agent only the tools and permissions the task needs.
  2. Set a ceiling above which it must stop and ask a person, for example any payment or refund above an amount you choose.
  3. Record every action with the source it relied on, so you can check its reasoning after the event.
  4. Test it on real past cases before it touches live work, and test again when its scope or data changes.

The NIST AI Risk Management Framework makes the same general point: organisations should map where an AI system can cause harm and put measurement and human oversight around those points, rather than trust the system as a whole.

A worked example

Example only. A small distributor receives about 300 supplier invoices a month. An RPA bot copies totals from a portal into the ledger in seconds, but 40 invoices arrive by email as PDFs in different layouts, and the bot cannot read them. A person spends roughly a day a month keying those in. An agent can read the PDFs, match each to a purchase order and post the ones that agree. Where an invoice is above, say, £5,000 or the amounts do not match, it stops and puts the item in front of a person with the evidence attached. The bot keeps doing what it does well; the agent takes the varied work; a person keeps the judgement calls.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme Business is a business account that comes with five AI agents rather than a bot builder. The Finance agent holds the cash position, runs the month-end close and releases payments only below the line you set; above it, a person decides. Every action is recorded with its source. The agents are certified by Pryme Intelligence before they act, and must re-earn certification when their mandate or data changes. You can see how the pieces connect on how it works, or read our wider guide to AI agents in business finance.

Questions people ask

Is RPA a type of AI?

Traditional RPA is not. It follows recorded rules and does not interpret content. Some RPA products now add AI features for reading documents, which blurs the line, so ask a vendor which parts follow fixed rules and which make judgements.

Will AI agents replace RPA?

Not entirely. Fixed, high-volume steps on stable systems are often cheaper and more predictable with plain automation. Agents earn their place where inputs vary or judgement is needed.

Are AI agents harder to audit than RPA?

They can be, because their steps are not fixed. That is why an agent should record each action with its source and stop at a ceiling, so a person can check what happened and why.

Can I run RPA and an AI agent together?

Yes. A common pattern is automation for collecting data and an agent for interpreting it, with a person approving anything above a set limit.
