Ten years, one trunk

The business has changed shape four times and never changed what it was rooted in. Each version was built out of what the last one could not do.

2016E-commerce

An online grocery store, built out of a faulty tab. Selling the food was the easy part — taking the money for it, and moving it, turned out to be the business.

2018OjirehPrime Card

A prepaid card. The first time the company issued rather than resold, and the first time it carried the obligations that come with holding somebody else’s money.

2020Microfinance bank

PrymeSolid Allianze acquired — an existing bank with an existing licence. The perimeter stopped being someone else’s to draw.

2023Multicurrency

More than one currency on one balance, and the rebrand to Pryme. A Nigerian business could hold dollars without holding a second institution.

2026Agentic operations

Accounts that do the work rather than only hold value. Five agents on the account, inside a policy you write — which is where the new mark starts.

Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

AI agents

AI agents for import and export businesses: documents and FX

How AI agents help importers and exporters with shipment documents, commodity codes, supplier payments, currency and records, and where people must decide.

The short answer

Import and export businesses can use AI agents to track each shipment's documents, check that invoices and declarations match, keep EORI, licence and record-keeping tasks on a calendar, prepare supplier payments, hold receipts in the currency paid and flag changes to supplier bank details. Commodity classification in unclear cases, licences, sanctions questions, currency conversion and any payment above your limit should stay with named people and your customs agent.

Trading goods across borders means one shipment can generate a dozen documents: proforma invoice, commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading or air waybill, certificates of origin, licences and the customs declaration. Add payments in a foreign currency, a supplier on another time zone and a customs agent who needs answers today, and the admin can outweigh the trading.

This article uses the UK's official import and export step-by-step guides as its reference. Other countries have their own processes; for Nigeria, see the guide to the import documents banks ask for. This is general information, not customs or legal advice.

The paperwork in general terms

Step (UK, from GOV.UK)What it involvesAgent canPerson decides
EORI numberA number starting with GB for goods moving in or out of England, Wales or ScotlandRecord it, check it appears on documentsApplying, and any XI number for Northern Ireland
Commodity codeClassifies the goods; sets the duty rate and whether a licence is neededUse codes you or your agent have confirmed for each productNew products and unclear cases
Customs valueUsed to work out duty and import VATCheck invoice values match the declarationValuation questions
Licences and certificatesNeeded for some goods, such as animals, plants, medicines, chemicals and wasteTrack expiry dates, list what each shipment needsWhether a licence or sanction applies
DeclarationMade by you or by a customs agent or transporterSend the agent a complete, consistent packSigning off the declaration
RecordsKeep commercial invoices and customs paperwork, including import VAT certificates (C79)File every document against the shipmentHow long to keep records, with your accountant

GOV.UK notes that most importers use a transporter or customs agent, who can also help with commodity codes. The agent's job is not to replace that specialist but to hand them a complete, consistent file and to answer their questions from your records.

Matching documents before they cost you

Many delays come from mismatches: a packing list showing 400 cartons against an invoice for 420, a value in one currency on the invoice and another on the proforma, or a product description that does not match the code used last time. These are easy to catch when every document is compared field by field, which is exactly the kind of check an agent does well and a busy person skips.

  • Quantities, weights and values compared across invoice, packing list and transport document.
  • Commodity codes checked against your confirmed product list; anything new held for a person.
  • Licences and certificates matched to the goods that need them, with expiry dates.
  • For exports, freight and insurance shown separately from the goods value, as GOV.UK advises, and evidence kept where VAT zero-rating is used.

Payments, currency and fraud

Importers pay suppliers in dollars, euros or pounds; exporters receive them. Converting every receipt on arrival and buying currency for every payment can cost more than it needs to. A cleaner approach is to hold the currencies you trade in, pay foreign costs from them, and convert only when a person decides.

Supplier payment fraud is a particular risk in trade. A common pattern is an email, apparently from the supplier, announcing new bank details just before a large payment. An agent should never act on changed details. It should hold the payment, flag the change and require a person to confirm by a known phone number. The guide to stopping import payment fraud sets out the checks.

  • Deposits and balances prepared against the proforma and contract terms.
  • Payments released only below your limit; larger ones wait for a named approver.
  • Any change of supplier bank details stops the payment until a person confirms.
  • Counterparties screened against the lists your policy names; a possible match is held for a person.

Worked example

Example only, invented figures. A UK business importing kitchenware from overseas and exporting to two African buyers reads its weekly brief.

Inbound
Container due Friday. Invoice and packing list agree; one new product has no confirmed commodity code. Held for the customs agent.
Payment
Supplier balance of USD 18,500 due on arrival, paid from the USD balance after the owner approves.
Fraud check
An email asked for payment to a new account. Payment held; owner to call the supplier on the number on file.
Outbound
Two export invoices issued with freight shown separately; proof of export filed for VAT.
Receipts
GBP 9,200 and USD 11,000 received from buyers, held in the currency paid.
Decisions
The commodity code, the bank detail change, and whether to convert part of the USD.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme Business account holds NGN, USD, GBP and EUR, each with local account details, and can be opened from any country; see multicurrency. Its five agents are built and certified by Pryme Intelligence. The Compliance agent screens customers and counterparties and records refusals; the Finance agent releases supplier payments only below the line you set. Outside Nigeria, financial activities are carried out through regulated partners; in Nigeria, Naira deposits are held by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank, licensed by the CBN. For selling online abroad, see AI agents for multicurrency stores.

Questions people ask

Can an AI agent choose the commodity code for my goods?

It can apply codes you or your customs agent have confirmed for each product. New products and unclear cases should be classified by a person or the customs agent, because the code sets duty and licence needs.

Do I still need a customs agent if I use AI agents?

Usually, yes. GOV.UK notes most importers use a transporter or customs agent. An AI agent can prepare a complete, consistent file for them.

Can an agent pay a supplier who has changed bank details?

It should not. A change of details should stop the payment until a person confirms it by a known contact.

Which records should an importer keep in the UK?

GOV.UK says to keep commercial invoices and customs paperwork, including import VAT certificates (C79). Ask your accountant how long to keep them.
